We are stacked at OLB.

Fleming and Filer are gone after this season, leaving Ishaq as the only obvious Cat OLB for 2012 and beyond. Shembo and Spond are currently at OLB, but neither really fits the profile; I think Kelly would much rather move them both inside, but he can't until he's got more experience on the edges.

I guess when we get 2 running backs this year we will put him at OLB

Im pretty positive that Teo is staying his senior year. So I could see Shembo being beside him next year, Spond as his back up?

Very possible. Or, if Te'o leaves/ gets injured (knock on wood), Shembo could play MILB and Spond could play WILB. We unfortunately don't have enough depth at OLB to even contemplate that atm, so those two have to remain at the DOLB.

It's at least better than the depth at Cat. Pretty sure Ishaq Williams is the only returner there.

I'd like to see Niklas at Cat long term, but unless Ishaq makes some serious strides this year, I'm guessing Shembo will have to take over as the #1 Cat next year.

I wish we had a better idea of how Councell is doing. He needs to step up at Dog ASAP.

And it's anyone's guess where Perkins, Okwara (and Odenigbo pretty please?) end up.

God, I hope so.

Isn't Filer eligible for a 5th year?

No.

Councell is probably going to redshirt.

Not sure why he has to "step up."

Linebacker depth is not a concern.

We're talking about next year, right?

We have 2 freshmen getting time this year. Niklas and Williams.

We have two very capable sophomores that have broken into the starting spots. Spond and Shembo.

Councell will most likely redshirt and work in the rotation next year.

ILB:

Calabrese, Teo, Rabasa, Moore, Utupo, Grace

With 2/3 OLBs in the recruiting class making a similar impact as Niklas and Williams, why are we so concerned with this?

At the end of the day, we have linebackers growing out of our ears. We have great depth at both outside and inside linbackers.

I guess I just don't see Shembo and Spond as long-term OLBs; more as temporary stop-gaps.

Williams, Niklas, and Councell are the only OLBs we have who fit the profile. Only Williams and Niklas are seeing reps this year. Will they be ready to start next year, if necessary?

Okwara fits the profile; Perkins, not so much. He's strikes me as more of a utility guy like Shembo (not that that's a bad thing.)

It's such an important position in Diaco's scheme; our projected 2012 depth doesn't really inspire confidence. Unless Williams and Niklas break out, of course.

I think Ishaq has been pretty impressive when he has been in/ The Michigan State game has definately been his best game so far

We knew he'd be good at pass-rushing (though we haven't seen much of him; he's only got 1 unassisted tackle in 3 game played). Will he be able to set the edge against the run or cover a WR in space?

Shembo had a solid freshman season. He's played 2 games against scrambling qbs where his main objective was setting the edge. None of our LBs played very well against those teams. You can't write him off based on that. Also, using the "profile" thing as support for their ability to be OLB in this defense is a bit absurd. The staff has praised both of them for their athletic ability at the position.

In an ideal world? Yeah, they'd all be 6' 4+ and weigh 240, but they're going to play guys who perform well, which Shembo and Spond seem to do.

That leaves 5 OLBs with 2 to 3 coming in the next class. Staff seems to agree that's it's not a area of huge need.

We need to be worried about the secondary next year.. LBs are young and getting valuable experience.

Lo Wood and Bennett Jackson.. pray for speedy development.

A simplistic way of looking at next year's LB situation would be to say that we have three starters returning: Te'o, Calabreese/Fox, and Shembo/Spond. At Cat, we would have one somewhat experienced and uber-talented player=IWilliams. As transitions go, that's almost as good as a coach can wish for. To that we can add Niklas.

Looking at it a little more "idealistically" and future-oriented, one would consider the potential of Councell, Grace, and Moore. One also would consider that although there seems a great deal of OLB potential, our ILB function [except for Manti] is not quite where Diaco wants it. So, who steps up into the ILB mix?? There are to my thinking two scenarios:

1). Diaco goes with his as-yet-untried studs there and hopes one comes through --- preferably at least two. These guys are: Grace, Rabasa, Moore, Utupo. My intuition is that it is not going to be Moore or Utupo, as they probably would be doing more already if they were the answer. That leaves Grace or Rabasa to either takeover some WILL playing time or at least be groomed for the year after. Sounds a little risky to me.

2). that's why I think that the second scenario of stealing at least Shembo from the OLBs might be the way. If The Prince went into the middle, Spond, Councell, and Perkins could hold down the Dog, and Ishaq, Troy, and even Anthony Rabasa could hold down the Cat. [I believe that Okwara is going to grow into a road-grading D-Line monster even if his weight isn't what this board thinks it should be].

I am much more concerned in the slightly longer run what we do in the interior than on the edge. There seems to be stunning talent "out there", far outshining the talent level inside [bow to the exception of Manti].

See minute 31 of this week's press conference for Kelly's take on "profile"
