I grew up in Pittsburgh and have lived in Atlanta for 20 years...I don't know 1 Indiana fan, and I'm not sure I've ever met one. That said, I went to the Indiana/Oregon playoff game last year and I thought the Indiana fans were great. Also, I don't love Cignetti as a person....he comes off as a nerd trying to be tough. But we all know football well enough to be on a football message board multiple times a day, and anyone who tries knocking what he did at IU is a flat out hater...and no better than a nerd trying to be tough.

Jerseyboy said "Marcus almost did it" well Marcus hasn't yet...and he's at ND not Indiana and has been twice as long...and that's my whole point. If Cignetti looked and acted like Marcus he'd already be crowned the next Saban.

But again, I'm not a hater...what he did at IU is nothing short of impressive. Look at some of his wins over the last couple years compared to ND's. Ya, ND beat UGA and PSU during the playoff run. And they also have some nice wins against USC and Clemson to go with some ugly losses. Cig has beat Oregon twice, OSU (who ND beat twice in 100+ years), Miami who ND lost to last year, killed Bama, killed a top 10 Illinois team by 50 all the while never tripping up with an ugly loss. 2 L's in two years and it was against #2 OSU and #3 ND.

Maybe I'm missing the point that ND fans HATE Indiana football as that would be new to me. But to downplay Cig, IU, or the Big Ten is just goofy to me.

Sea Turtle’s favorite coach, favorite team will always be a coach/team that is not on a Notre Dame sideline. He likes being the downtrodden fan. IU is just his current fixation for filling that role.

"I don't like Cignetti because he talks tough but schedules like a coward and works the system in ways I don't think are good for the sport."

"Ok but look at how much success he has had at Indiana. He's clearly a great coach. Probably the best coach in the country."

"Yeah he might be. I don't like him because he talks tough but schedules like a coward and works the system in ways that are bad for the sport."

"I think I'm sensing some dislike of Indiana due to envy. Is it because Indiana is an in-state basketball school and just had a lot of success last season?"

"No, I don't really care about Indiana that much. I don't like Cignetti because he talks tough but schedules like a coward and works the system in ways that are bad for the sport."

"If you can't respect what Indiana did last year I think you have to be bitter about how much success they have."

"I don't really care about last year. Glad Miami didn't win. I just don't like Cignetti because he talks tough but schedules like a coward and works the system in ways I think aren't good for the sport."

"Have you considered that he beat OSU last year? Freeman hasn't done that!"

"Wow you're right. Let's get on our knees and blow him. :3"

He post fairly regularly on the IU hoops message board. I think he’s a legit Hoosier basketball fan but there isn’t really such a thing when it comes to football.

Sea turtles on shore are typically easy to spot.

People are jumping to "downplay Cig, IU..." when it's more, 'he's not the greatest coach in history and NIL and the portal factored in massively in their success." It seems to be a bend the knee or be a delusional hater thing. He figured out how to use the portal most effectively first. Can't deny that. But saying things like he did something Urban Meyer or Nick Saban couldn't is where it's getting ridiculous. It's fair to question him. He won with 52 transfers. Only 13 were from JUM and only 4 of those were big contributors. He paid good money for players other coaches developed. Guys that weren't highly rated coming out of high school but OTHER coaches developed into really good players. He did put them in good spots obviously to win, but we can't just pretend like he did it with players he developed.

Really? I’ve found Indiana to be a popular school for those that are Jewish. No clue why…

Cig is a great coach. He really is. He’s got his team well prepared. That said, I stand by that he (or IU) schedules like cowards. His Big Ten Championship - National Championship run was very impressive, however. Running through Ohio State, Alabama, Oregon and Miami in a row is extremely challenging and impressive.

Living in South Florida, I’ve encountered a lot of Jewish IU alums. It’s not to the level of the “U”. But noticeable. Coincidence perhaps?

I still have no idea WTF you're talking about. Who asked you whether there were a lot of Jewish IU fans?

It was just in response to the poster saying he’s never encountered one IU fan in Pitt and Atlanta.

The only person i know who went to IU also happens to be Jewish. There's definitely schools that tend to have more prominent Jewish student bodies, such as Tulane

Buddy, we got a 257 page thread under a non-ND player's name that is all about food and Cincinnati chili.

It's ain't a meaningful yardstick...
Add to the fact that, well, it’s our board; it’s literally the place to talk about what we want. Now going on another team’s board and dropping non sequiturs about “the Jews” is 👀👀

I completely get what you're saying, but to think Urban or Saban could take ANY (Indiana was literally bottom of the barrel) school in America and win a Natty in 2 years because of NIL and the portal is pretty ridiculous. I truly believe Freeman is a top 3 coach, at a top 5 blueblood, with deep pockets and somewhat lighter transfer rules...and he didn't go 27-2 with a Natty and a Heisman winner over the last two years. Look at Dan Lanning, he's yet to pull it off at Oregon.

My point is, sure Indiana scheduled weak (Look our ours), he took already developed transfers like everyone else, and was able to COACH everyone to a Natty. I don't know, I think the Cig hate is humorous and I can't help but to think the ones spewing the most of it....are fat dudes who never played a sport....eating a hot pocket in their Moms basement. Because anyone who watches football like I do....can look at what he's done and think....HOLY FUCKING SHIT....WOW

Why is that ridiculous? Its Urban Meyer and Nick Saban. Jesus Christ, coaches that have won MULTIPLE National Championships. Did they use magic to win their MULTIPLE national titles? They didn't have the same situation as Cig. If Saban and Meyer had $40 million and access to any player in the country they wanted, they could do it to. And no, Cig didn't take developed transfers "like everyone else". That's the point, no one did that until he did. Other teams focused on different types of players. They took younger players that had high recruiting rankings but hadn't played much. He took experienced players with only a year of eligibility left. It was smart, but it doesn't make him a better coach then Urban Meyer and Nick Saban. The idea that this guy is some kind of magical football guru who took a "literally bottom of the barrel" team and won a national championship is absurd. The teams he had at IU are 100% NOT the same teams that had been at IU previously. He brought in an almost completely new team with NIL money and the transfer portal. He did it brilliantly, but this idea that he is doing things that Hall of Fame coaches could never do is silly. And insulting everyone who dares to disagree is small time too.

Agree 100%. I can be impressed with what he did and annoyed with people who want to crown him the GOAT at the same time.

Not to sidetrack this post, but if Illinois was ever a top 10 team I sure didn’t take it seriously.

Not sure why you need to jump back and forth between your Sea Turtle handle and this burner. Getting flashbacks of ND2008 and NDFAN2008.

I agree that Cignetti is a great coach, but he won at IU with the sport as it is now. He's a great coach because he won a title, and coaches at other schools that don't have a history in football haven't won. But do I think Cignetti would have done this at IU twenty years ago? Probably not. And the assumption that winning at IU is impossibly difficult is based on a perception of the sport as it was twenty years ago, not as it is now.

That's just not true. I love Notre Dame football more than any other team. But most of us didn't go to Notre Dame. We went to other schools. And when you're school wins the national championship in football at a school like Indiana. it's a really big deal.

Congrats, the IU football boards probably love celebrating Cignetti. Your penchant for begin both A) negative on ND and B) now celebratory apparently towards IU is understandably annoying to some. You can be one or the other I suppose to some degree, the combination is tiresome.

Between Bishop w/ Bama, the new OSU troll with OSU, and the closeted IU fans, I’m not sure why this sudden shock/realization has come about the people on a ND message board may not like talking positively about other programs other than ND came from.

I've been a poster on here for years. I'm a staple in the game threads so obviously I'm a fan.

I'm a bit hard on ND the same way I am about the Cowboys. 30 years without a divisional playoff win. It's a disgrace.
I've probably defended Cig on here too much. It's the first championship for one of my teams since 1995 when I was a kid and I still am on a high.

TTown was reasonable and people got soft.
