How about we talk about all the young players making contributions that are Kelly's recruits.

Elmer, Stanley, N. Martin, Niklas, Koyak, DD, Folston, Cam, and Golson.
Tuitt, KVR, Jaylon, Luke, Hardy has really been coming on the past few games.

That isn't even including the true freshmen that have shown promise such as Folston, Butler, Robinson, Fuller, Redfield, etc.

Kelly has had only 3 recruiting classes that are his own, I would say he is doing a pretty damn good job.

We're an average team in year 4 of the Kelly era. The pollsters and voters aren't stupid. We are #25 because that's where we belong. In Notre Dame's history of what "damn good: means, we simply are not. We're average. I do not see any momentum that tells me otherwise. It's not what I want, but I believe it is the truth.

I understand people getting on the D but I hope some understand how difficult it really is to defend the option when its run to near perfection.

Next week ND will play a 'normal' offense and will have Nix back in and defensively will be back in their comfort zone.

Don't start this crap again. Western Kentucky held them to 107 rushing yards.

Yeah, how often do you see a mediocre .500 team go a whole game without 1 (that's ONE)freakin' penalty the whole game! Needless to say, the officiating was just about as bad as the ND defense!

FWIW, coming into today, Navy was third in the country in fewest penalties. They're a well-coached team and don't make a lot of mistakes. However that "unnecessary roughness" penalty on Utupo (Farley?) was an all-time lousy call. Almost like they threw targeting, realized it wasn't, and had to justify it somehow.
And the holding call on Niklas that wiped out McDaniel's touchdown before Tommy's first pick was pretty borderline too. (though IIRC, there were multiple flags on that play. Niklas' was the accepted penalty because it was the furthest upfield).

The transitive property is bullshit, phork

It is. The transitive property would have had Michigan State losing to Michigan today. That clearly didn't happen.
But it's true our defense should have played better. Between injuries, scheme and mediocre safeties and ILBs, it was a rough day all around on that side of the ball. Just glad we won.

They're talking about escaping with a win. They're talking about how they have to improve, if they expect to win out. And the coaches are probably reminding the guys how nervous they must have been, in the 4th quarter. And tomorrow the talk will turn to how they wouldn't have felt that way, if they had just put them away in the first 3 quarters. The coaches will probably be talking about how Pitt will beat them like a drum, if they sleepwalk next weekend like they did this weekend. They'll be using the word "focus" in every sentence, and they'll probably be talking about evaluating the depth chart at EVERY position.

Are you serious? Our scheme expected the OLB to play both the QB and the pitch and the CB to play both the pitch and wide out. The DL played at least two yards back and they seemed to have played passively by design. Diaco seems utterly clueless planning for the option.

So an average team goes 12-0. The following year this average team most likely will go 10-2 and 9-3. You have high standards

In our last 22 Games we are 19-3. Average would be what 11-11? I get your point, your just not right. Not many teams have that type of record over the same period of time. Objectively this team is clearly headed in the right direction.

We're winning but we've been playing like an average team.

Is that what you mean, Patulski?

Because that, I can agree with.

I assume Alabama and is the only team with a better record than us since the beginning of last season. I could be wrong, It could be a couple teams. Either way, being in the top 5 in win % since last season started is FAR above average.

Since the start of 2012, Oregon and Alabama have one loss. Florida State and Northern Illinois have two. Ohio State none. We're alongside Stanford and Louisville at three. You can debate the quality of those losses (and close wins) all you want. But we're doing OK.

Also I don't know why Moore isn't starting. He's not a superstar but at least he tries to tackle and play pass D unlike Calabrese.

I didn't see the corners for the Irish get off their blocks very much and this was allowing the Navy option to work extremely well. And the safeties run support was not very good either.

I got the feeling watching the game that the Irish was really kinda pedestrian in their approach on defense. Almost like they were saying "well, it's Navy so we just have to go through the motions to win." Even Kelly looked like he was simply "there" for the most part. How else can you explain a 190 lb RB running over the ILB, and then dragging a DL and a corner for three to four yards? I hope the entitlement attitude hasn't set in with some of the players. It just seemed like the ones that were busting tail were the freshmen - Jaylon and Folston. Jaylon didn't have a great game all in all but he was still humping... and that's more than I can say for some. That pedestrian attitude has gotta change with some of the upper classmen.

Some people always complaining. 19-2 last 2 regular seasons. How would that sound for Weiss, Willingham, and Davie? Just sayin if we had Golson this year I think we may have been undeafeated at this point or at most one loss. Lastly, Jaylon is still my defensive MVP this year.

I guess if we stand along side programs like Stanford, Louisville, OSU, FSU, and Alabama over the last 2 seasons, we must not be doing very well........

You are wrong about the talent level. We have top 10-15 talent...even with our deficiencies. We should have beaten Michigan and Oklahoma...we were talent wise the better team.

Pollsters are stupid. ASU is a better team?

See I asked this during the game day thread. I didn't see him all game.

I thought I saw him on special teams when Councell got hurt but I wasn't sure. This seemed like a perfect game for him but if he did play he was invisible. Everything involving the linebackers made no sense to me. On 4th and short the ILBs were 8 yards back. I feel like this team expected Navy to be a passing team.

If you say we're average, I want whichever drugs made you forget 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2009. Those teams were average. I'm not thrilled with the team or staff, but average teams are not 7-2 with two top 25 wins.

Certainly even on talent, if not better. Our defense played like *** against Michigan. That's why we lost. And, today's issues aside, our D has gotten better.
With Oklahoma, Rees played his worst game of the year. I firmly believe we win that game if Golson's behind center. We're a pretty solid team, and underrated at 25.

The Irish have the talent. But you are how you play. And today they were average. Take the win, learn from it, and work on getting better. The rest takes care of itself.
