Yeah, but that's not as bad of a loss. Wisconsin and Northwestern probably field about the same talent, whereas there's no reason we aren't far superior to NW.

BK certainly has some head scratching moments in games with play calling,decisions,clock management...but we also watch ND with passion and analyze things to a much deeper degree than coaches of other teams...if we aren't turning the ball over 50xs a game and 1 penalty called we would be singing praises....we are all pissed that our hopes have been squashed but Kelly is the man for the job.

I guess it's true for any year, but would be a tough market for a top coach with Michigan and Florida being open. In a vaccum, I'm taking those jobs before ND's.

Talk to some Wisconsin fans. I don't think they'd agree with you. Wisconsin shouldn't be losing to Northwestern either. Nor should Missouri lose to Indiana. But that's why the games are played.

Almost every one of my friends are Wisconsin fans, lol. They're much happier with Anderson than Biellema.

I repped you, but I want to go on the record agreeing with this post too.
If anyone goes through my post history, there's plenty of criticism of Kelly. None of it means I think Kelly should be fired- not even close. I enjoy discussing the Irish, I enjoy talking about what could be done better, and I get frustrated when things don't go well. However, at the end of the day, I know that Kelly's one hell of a coach and ND's been lucky to have him.

Of course they are. That's not saying much though---Bielema was not well liked. I don't think Arkansas fans have embraced him either.
But my point really had nothing to do with Anderson per se. It was that to most Wisconsin fans, losing to Northwestern is an embarrassing loss.

What does it matter if their fans are embarrassed or not? If NW and Wisconsin are fielding the same amout of talent, it's not that crazy of a loss.
Bielema is not a bad coach. They have played pretty good this year. Lost some very close games.
Kelly is a good coach and I have enjoyed watching the Irish the last few years. BTW, I have been watching the Irish for 43 years. Seen ups and downs. We are currently enjoying some big wins and some head scratching loses but that is football. College football today is much more competitive than ever. Northwestern is not the cream puff everybody thought. They have more often than not, played the Irish tough. Most teams do (play the Irish tough) unless they are overconfident.
I hope Kelly stays a little longer.

I don't necessarily believe they field the same talent. Just compare the two teams' records over the past ten years or so. Wisconsin has been the superior team. When was the last time Wisconsin was the Big Ten's representative in the Rose Bowl? 2012 (also 2011 and 2010). When was the last time Northwestern went? 1995. I'm not sure what the recruiting sites may say, and I frankly don't care. Wisconsin has been more successful on the field recently and has less stringent academic standards than Northwestern. So I seriously doubt that they field equally talented teams. You're free to think whatever you want, but their fans---and I think most CFB fans---would believe that Wisconsin shouldn't be losing to Northwestern.

Chris Mortensen has something in common w/ Brian Kelly...they share the same agent...Trace Armstrong (former UF All-American). Sounds like an agent posturing for his client to me.

He rebuilt the program from dirt, took us to the title game and routinely reels in some of the best recruiting classes outside the South. He deals up with more extracurricular BS than any other coach in big-time football and was a stand-up guy throughout the whole Frozen Five affair with no support from the university. He's finally got his offense humming and is an epic run of bonehead turnovers and a bad pass interference flag away from being undefeated. And then he makes a few bad calls in a close game, his captain running back fumbles a put-it-away run and his senior kicker yaks all over the field, and now half this crowd is ready to toss him.
Did Saturday suck? Of course. But it's one game. If I was him I might just give us ingrates the finger and head for the NFL.

So hang on to a guy who's been pretty decent because you're afraid of disaster? That's negotiating from a point of weakness. That's playing not to lose.
As far as ND Nation not being able to offer a realistic alternative, how many of them are AD's, agents, coaches, or big money boosters? People like that usually don't hang out on degenerate message boards. The fact that the ND Nation message board hasn't offered you a viable alternative means nothing. It doesn't mean a better coach isn't out there.
All coaches are unknowns and gambles until they start coaching games. There are no guarantees. Numerous variables go into a coach's success. But 62 games is a pretty good track record. 62 games in, and Brian Kelly does not have a team close to championship caliber. And this isn't a case like Jimbo Fisher. He was pulling in amazing talent in his recruiting classes that he's been able to utilize to win 26 games in a row.
Will the light finally turn on for the staff and players to finally put championship-caliber games together? I hope so. But I'm not optimistic.

For me it is not just one game. It's a whole series of detail oriented things that are failures over his tenure. I mean after four years we still cannot get a play in on time. We should skip 1st quarters all together because ND ar notorious slow starters. I have yet to see one complete game from all three phases except may be against Michigan this year. Our defensive recruiting is severely lacking. There is the yearly WTF game. The turnovers are a huge concern. Have been for four years. We cannot get a RB deployed properly.
I understand that 8-5 might be an acceptable season or floor for some but the recruits are not coming to a school with high academic demands that perennially get the shits hyped out of them every preseason and then go 8-5 again and again. The inexplicable losses at home to crap teams are ridiculous. I am not saying fire himbecause he has obviously elevated the program from where it was but my confidence is waning.

I just think he does "more with less"... their QB isn't even MAC level. Barely even FCS level. And they're still playing hard, winning games, and fielding an over-achieving defense despite replacing 8 starters.
Are we all in agreement that next year is it for Kelly? We have waited all these years for the stars to finally align for him and there are no more excuses. He has "his guys" in the fold including "his" QB whether that ends up being Golson or Zaire. He will have starting players back from suspension in KVR, Ishaq, and DD. The only starers not returning are Riggs and Koyack. If Kelly can not get the job done next season with all this talent and an easier schedule to boot he should be gone. The excuse train would have run it's course if that does end up being the case. I want the guy to succeed as bad as anyone but next year is it for me.

I'm with Nuke on this one, we should hope BK stays for another 5 years. We all love ND and while its a top job in terms of prestige its not a destination many coaches will choose. Its harder to recruit at ND, harder to keep kids qualified, harder to dodge the scrutiny of the media, the demands have to be tremendous, why would you choose ND over Florida? I think we will be lucky to keep BK.
As for this nightmare of a season, the tsunami of turnovers is playing a huge role in our losses, I've never seen anything like this......I don't want to say "fluke" but I highly doubt we have back to back season like this.......hopefully I'll NEVER see this madness again in my life!

Kelly I can see taking the Bears gig and proably bolt to somewhere else .....who knows with him, but I'd be supprise if Saban bolts again for the nfl, I mean he's got a $ 40 million dollar contract with Alabama for now but if they go to the NC game I'm sure they'll give him a new deal.

Fire Kelly threads should be locked up and burned at the stake until someone can give me viable candidates who would come to South Bend, have the resume that Kelly has in regards to program building, can recruit to South Bend and isn't going to bolt in 4 years or less once success takes hold.
Ask Michigan how their coaching search is going. Hoke might just get another year if he wins out or atleast beats Maryland and keeps OSU close. And really thats just because there is literally no one beating down the door to come North.

I don't think anyone is clamoring for him to be fired.
Instead, I think people have a legitimate concern that BK might not be the guy that can take the program from good to great (channeling my inner Jim Collins). If this year keeps up, he will have had 4 pedestrian years with one fantastic year sandwiched in the middle.
What's alarming is that the special year looks like an absolute outlier given that:
- the team relied on a defense that dominated the LOS, which there is no indication that will be replicated any time soon nor will they be close to it
- the offense was a ball control, low risk offense that looked to establish the run first, where as the other four seasons under Kelly relied on QB play and featured a more pass first mentality. BK's refusal to rely on the run in tough times this year only adds to this sentiment
Given those concerns, it is reasonable for anyone to conclude that maybe BK has a high floor and low ceiling and discuss whether or not it's worth the risk of looking to replace BK in the future if his trend line continues.
This is a great post. Something that I have tried to convey as well.
