Anybody else surprised Bettis didn't make it into the HOF on his first attempt? I have to admit I am, only 2 rushers on the all time top 20 rushing yards list are not in the HOF, Bettis and C Martin.

I'm not extremely surprised about Tim Brown, I've always thought he was extremely underrated as an NFL WR, probably becuase he in Oakland/LA for his entire career and overshadowed by Jerry Rice in San Francisco.

Here is my take on Bettis. He had an incredible career, especially for a big power back. He will definately get in, I'm betting on next year. The first year entry is for those truly game changing backs. Do you think Bettis was in the same category with Payton, Brown, Smith, and Sanders? I don't, that is why he is a year 2 or 3 man. It will be great to see him there when it does happen.

I really thought the whole "first ballot hall of famer" thing was exclusive to baseball but I know what you're saying. It drives me crazy that they do this in baseball and football. What do the writers and other voters have to prove with this? Once a guy is in the hall of fame, they don't have separate sections for first ballot guys, veterans committee guys, etc. My point is, if a guy is a hall of famer, he's a hall of famer, vote accordingly.

To piggy back off of that, i know he needs to be a HOF'er, but I bought tickets to surprise my brother in law for a concert and Deion happened to be there and my bro in law wanted a picture and Deion got mad, and was like "no I don't want any pictures don't take one, but i'll shake your hand" Really????

P.S. My brother in law was only 18 so he really liked Deion as a player

Seems like it's pretty tough to find someone who is a fan of Deion. I think he was good but a Hall of Famer? To me it's questionable. I was much younger when Deion played but I do recall teams cutting the field in half when they played the Falcons/49ers/Cowboys/Ravens/any more? Deion seemed to have the media wrapped around his finger in his younger days (now he is the media!) and really invented the school of self promoting. I have always thought that if you tell people how good you are for a long enough time, eventually they'll start to believe you. I always use Warren Sapp and Keyshawn Johnson as examples of this, Deion really perfected this.

Was Deon a first ballot guy??? if so that is crazy... sorry but you have to make a tackle at some point to qualify for the Hall as a defender... regardless of how shut down he was in coverage he was a HORRID tackler...

and yes, I'm bitter as hell about Bus and Brown... both should have made it this year...

I disagree with you. There is no doubt Sanders is a first ballot hall of famer. He was the best CB to every play, plus you have to factor in his return skills.

I also don't see how you have a gripe about Bettis and Brown not getting in. Marshal Faulk was a given that he would make it. Also, you have to remember that Curtis Martin has more rushing yards than the Bus and neither made it in this year. As for Brown, Chris Carter has been on the ballot for 3 years and hasn't made it in yet...

Sanders was a great d-back, I'm sorry for putting my negative on this but his self promoting actions dont sit well with some of us old guys. I can still see him hot dogging an interception return for a touchdown with the Falcons getting drilled by 30+ points in Buffalo. Someone may say yeh but he was returning it for a touchdown-big deal- what about the rest of your team/mates. The word selfish comes to mind when I think about this guy. In many ways Deion Sanders changed the attitude of the modern football player and IMO not for the better. But yes he could cover.

Sanders cover skills and highlight reels get him in the hall no doubt...

his couple lack of tackling ability, and what irishtrain brought up should have made him wait for a phone call at least a few years...

especially when The Bus and a once all time leading receiver are waiting to make ND tops of the list again...

I pretty much agree with all you've written here IrishTrain. One of your points particularly resonated with me, the pre-endzone celebration. I'm only in my 30's but I don't recally many (if any) players show boating from outside the endzone until Sanders. Now it's almost commonplace, so much so that the NCAA has a rule going into effect this upcoming season to deter such celebrations.

Showing emotion in the ultimate team game is one thing but Sanders took it to a whole new level, no doubt.

Sometimes when a player is sooo good at every other category that you can overlook some shortcomings. But with this case, Deion's tackling was soo bad that it has to play into his HOF eligibility. Yes he needs to be in the HOF, no doubt. But he isnt anymore impactful then Bettis was, or certain not as consistant or have the longevity that Brown had. Deion also embraced the fact that he didnt tackle, he used to say stuff to the effect, "i'm not paid to tackle...". I know I'm biased, but I'll take Mike Haynes, and my favorite Raider of all time Lester Hayes over Deion. At least my guys tackled.

that being said Deion is a HOF'r

I don't know if this is the case in football like it is in baseball but sometimes a guys' off the field behavior can have an impact on his post career achievements. I'm speaking specifically of Jack Morris who was notoriously a jerk to reporters. Now it seems as though the pitcher with the single best postseason pitching performance won't be getting into the HOF.

Too bad voters didn't take that into account for Deion (bashing Ladanian Tomlinon, the Dez Bryant fiasco, the Tim McCarver incident and his atrocious rap career).
