The entire state of Cali & the best you could come up w/ is a QB that left ND five years ago, a solid RB & a walk-on who was going to choose ND regardless based on his family connections? Off the top of my head I can list twice as many names from that state who have flipped or transferred in the last five years. BTW, I didn't say ignore the state, just don't act like it's ND's saving grace...it's not.

I didn't make a case for ND becoming like eveyone else...I pointed out moving into the 21st century where ND is far from the program it was pre-1994 could go a long way in evening the playing field. Just some tweaks to the scheduling that helps rather than hinders ND going undefeated or at least competing for a big bowl.

Why does ND have to bow down to SCum? Don't understand the ass kissing of that school. ND made SCum when Rockne agreed to play them. Now they refuse to play in South Bend in November b/c it's bit chilly? I say join the ACC and try to scheudle SCum & Navy when ND's schedule allows...not the other way around. If SCum & Navy schedule don't allow playing ND a particular year, so be it....it's not the end of the world and they can play the following year when the schedule allows. Navy is joining the AAC next year so their scheduling is going to have some prior commitments going forward w/ their new conference members plus Notre Dame will rank third behind AFA & Army for teams they must schedule every year.

I'm hoping your comment on your alum buddies mortgaging their houses was a throw away statement like mine was about offering a scholly to Navy b/c that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. If you were serious, then I'd ask them why they didn't do just that the first time ND/scUM series took an extended hiatus? Michigan? Please, they've done less for ND than any school in America. They were the main reason ND never joined the B1G in the first place...when ND would've jumped at the chance. That institution did every thing it could to hold ND down. It's not like ND will never play scUM again. I bet ND plays scUM sooner than they did when they restarted the last series. Muck Fichigan

Michigan made ND into a national power PRECISELY because of their hatred for ND.

But nobody is advocating that ND needs UM, just that the rivalry has deep roots for a LOT of alums.

Press anyone though, and I bet USC is a bigger rival.

And I never said CA was a saving grace, but your statement, "to hell with CA" is just myopic.

And also, it was negotiated for over 50 years that ND would play SC at SC in November and in Oct vs ND.

1959 - Notre Dame 16, USC 6
This was the last game played between the two teams in South Bend in November. Athletic Director Jess Hill proposed moving USC's games at Notre Dame Stadium to October, while continuing to play the Coliseum games in late November, to which Notre Dame agreed.
[16]

That is not a new development.

IF ND were to fully join the ACC, then Michigan series would be nearly dead for good. But you are just saying that your scholarship comment about getting rid of Navy from the schedule was a throwaway, but considering how much thought you put into it, I would say you are just covering up.

8 conference games
SC
Navy
Shamrock Series

Actually, in regards to recruiting CA, you said, "To hell with Cali." How did you expect everyone to interpret that?

As for CA players at ND, aside from the previously mentioned players, off the top of my head, Troy Niklas was a 2nd round draft pick, so there's that. GAIII, while definitely not the player many envisioned, had some HUGE moments in his career for ND, including an electrifying kickoff return for USC, a monumental KO return for a TD vs. MSU that swung the game, and an 80 yard TD run vs. Oklahoma that got us back into that game, among many other moments. Amir Carlisle is the starting kickoff returner and in important slot back, and he had 7 catches and 2 TD's against UM in that vital send-off game. Justin Utopo committed to ND sight unseen to ND to play under a different staff and a different defense, stuck around for 5 years, and played a vital role down the stretch after the defensive line was decimated by injuries. He ended up with something like 25 tackles, 6 against USC, despite being a LB playing DT. Taylor Dever, while not a great offensive lineman, started several games for ND and contributed to the program.

So while we haven't had great luck in CA, we still have gotten a few stars out of there, and several really important role players. To say "to hell with CA" and not put a premium on the state is absolutely ridiculous. There are TONS of ND fans out here and TONS of talent. If we had ended the season like we started, you bet your ass we'd be in the mix for a lot of CA talent.

Id prefer to join the Big Ten, put us in the West and we are pretty well set up to maintain the Purdue and Northwestern Rivalries and Play for conference championships against Ohio State, Michigan State, or Michigan. Those could be set up to be Epic Battles
Week one Navy ( even though I hate it)
week 2 Tin Can ( possible Shamrock)
Week 3 USC
week 4 Bye
conference play.

I thought an AD's wife or coach's wife (or wives) from ND was an influence on the November SoCal game? Then it stuck. Yes, no? Old wives tale?

Is there a specific thread about conference talk? If not, there should be. I would like to see everyone's opinion, because I am a big supporter of joining one.

No, you said,

We can miss a season or two out in CA. WTH has it done for us lately anyway?

So, in answer to your question, I gave you

1. Arguably, the best college QB ever to play at ND.
2. ND's last 1,000 yard rusher.
and
3. The guy who, in retrospect, was the glue that held together a defensive unit that, with him, looked like it was no worse than a Top 25 defense. And, without him, looked like one of the worst defenses in college football. Those are some significant contributions. But I don't claim them to be earth shattering. I was just answering your question.... apparently not the way you wanted it answered. Don't hate the answer, hate the question.

You made a case for ND setting their schedule up according to the trends in college football.

Exactly. Provided it's a Power 5 conference, an undefeated (or even 1 loss) ND is a virtual lock to be in the Playoff. ND doesn't have to win the SEC to get in so if the ACC provides a few more easy wins sign me up. The problem is that ND has yet to prove they can handle the "easy wins" as they typically play down to their competition. But...if they can start TCB vs the infererior teams, they can gain two advantages that most schools enjoy: resting starters & getting meaningful reps for the 2nd/3rd teamers. That obviously would've paid dividends this season.

If the bolded isn't you advocating for the same scheduling formula that 99% of the rest of college football is striving for, then I stand corrected. But it sure sounds like you want ND to start thinking and planning like everyone else.

ND doesn't bow down to USC, any more than they bow down to Stanford, when they play every other year's last game of the season in Palo Alto. It's an advantage for ND in a couple of ways: It is a nice break in late November South Bend weather, going to Cali................. and it's an opportunity for two of the larger alumni bases to get to see ND relatively close to home.

I'm hoping your comment on your alum buddies mortgaging their houses was a throw away statement like mine was about offering a scholly to Navy b/c that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. My tongue-in-cheek comment about mortgaging their houses was certainly not as dumb as alleging that the uproar about the ND-Mich series ending was all due to ND haters and Mich. fans, as if no one at ND cared about the Michigan series. But that's an entirely separate debate.

This is awesome. These kids give everything for this man, why? Because of things like this. He has their back. What it's all about right here.

It has to be an incredibly tough thing for a HC to decide how to handle disciplining players, but it's one of the most important parts of his job. You have to look in a kid's eyes, look into his heart, get inside his head, look at his background, and decide if he's a good kid who just strayed off the path, a lost kid who never had anyone teach him better, or a bad kid that you can't save and who will destroy your team if you don't make an example of him.

DJ Pettway walked across the stage this week and graduated from college. Saban won't always get it right when it comes to how to handle discipline problems, but he sure got it right this time.

NOT necessarily...that is only 11 games and who says we couldn't use the Shamrock Series against an ACC Conf. opponent? BC at Fenway, Syracuse at Meadowlands or even Navy anywhere. Using the SS for one of the 8 Conf. games or Navy means 2 more games (rotate Michigan's every other year, Purdue, Stanford)

I like where we are going with this...

So we don't have to worry about Kelly running off to the NFL anymore. Now just to the SEC.

Maybe I'm looking for a confirmation bias, but I feel like ever since the crappy ending to the regular season, BK's lost some arrogance and is (or is trying to) reenergized about being the football coach.... Maybe it's superficial, but he seemed animated after the LSU win and also a little more loose on twitter and in interviews lately.

Maybe he thinks his job isn't as safe as he thought? No idea.
