2012 was only season that was really great and thats looking more and more like a fluke. My oponion is give BK next year to make the playoffs and if he doesnt fire him. Otherwise we are essentially saying we are happy with the football program opretaing like Brey with the basketball program. IMo BK has so many advantages over Brey that he should be held to a much higher standard. This has been an embarassing football season. Either make the playoffs next year with a more experienced defense and a favorable schedule or fire bk and unfortunately tome to start from scratch

But now go back 3-4 years in history and remember what the perception was of ND. Can't blame him for that. BK has been changing the program that has been awful for the last 20 years and down right embarrassing since '07.

As much as I am tired of ND losing games that they should be winning, and as much as I think there is room for valid criticism of Kelly........... ^^^^this^^^^ has a lot of merit to it.

He's definitely a good coach. Not sure if he is a great coach though. He's certainly the best thing we've had since Holtz.

With the returning starters and the schedule we have next year, anything less than 11-1 is unacceptable IMO. If Kelly can't get us to 11-1 next year, I just don't see us making the playoffs under him. I'd be ready to move on at that point.

Does anyone really think we have less talent than ASU, NW, or Louisville? Cause I don't...

Year 5 for a coach who has lost four or more games four of the 5 years he has been at ND. He's good but he will never have ND where the fans want this program to be.

Is it any coincidence that Obama is the president and we're playing shitty?

Year 5 and we're praying for last second FGs to keep us in the game, at home, vs. North Western and Louisville. Enough said.

Because fans have unrealistic expectations and don't understand what it takes to truly build a program from the bottom all the way up.

Gotcha. A Timeout that resulted in NO points for the opposition, nor did it take points off of the board for us, equals DIRECT responsibility for a loss. And how many days ago did you start watching football?

Gotcha! ND scored on 4 of their 5 trips to the end zone, but that DIRECTLY resulted in ND losing the game. Do your parents know that you are up this late?

Being such an obvious expert on football talent, you must be a coach, scout, or front office guy?

There's plenty of room for questioning if Kelly could be doing better, at this point. But to question whether or not he iis competent, based on claims that he was directly responsible for today's loss and using the above as "proof", well that's just dumb. I hate to call it dumb, but I can't think of any better way to express it.

It set them up if the opportunity presented itself, and more importantly, gave UL time to set up their defense. So much for that "fast-paced" offense.

Yeah, because I definitely call a screen in goal-to-go situations. Speaking of which buddy, it may be time for you to go beddie bye. Do you need a glass of warm milk. ND scored despite the plays called.

I never questioned his competency. I asked whether he was good or merely okay. No, dumb would be your entire argument. No other way of putting it.

I understand a lot of the frustration with this team right now with the start they had. There have been some head scratchers for sure, but I really do agree with youth being a huge problem on defense. Many times someone is in a position to make a play and misses a tackle. I've watched guys (Morgan) clearly plug wrong gaps allowing for big plays. The safety play is horrific right now. I don't know how you cover up such poor play and lack of athleticism. I would much prefer to watch an athlete (Max) make a mistake here and there than guys who can't react and cover a seam route in a cover 2.
I disagree with abandoning the run at times too quickly, despite what statistics may show. And quite frankly I'm a little surprised by EGs lack of pre snap reads and ability to scan the field. Especially to his left.
Gotta get this stuff right man. I'm not on the ledge like most because clearly I think each loss was a totally winnable game. I'm just scratching my head about how things seem to be snowballing. And I absolutely hate the mid season change of a damn holder due to one mistake. This hasn't worked out well.

He has had 3 upperclassman in the defense suspended for the season.

Suspensions (albeit not for the season) happen. So do injuries. We've had bad luck but we're not unique in that regard.

I'm tired of being excuse U.

As critical as I am of Kelly, it's hard for even me to find fault in him individually for this particular game. This defense is just so beat up at this point and it's a shit sandwich combo of a gaggle of true freshman having to fill critical roles in a complicated scheme being implemented by a new defensive coordinator. We can't stop anybody right now and you can bet your ass SC is going to light this group up for 40+ next week. This was not a Northwestern performance from Kelly today.

With that said, count me as having serious doubts about his ability to ever get this program truly over the hump. Good, not great.

Some of you guys can't see the forest through the trees.

Are you really saying that a coach that has been coaching for over 20 years with a .700 winning percentage is a bad coach? The guy is statistically winning on par with the very best in the business and doing it currently with one of the hardest programs to coach.

Go grab a beer, relax and play with your kids, go get your fuqing mind right and try to remember that this is a fuqing game. One tough season doesn't signal the apocalypse.

And one great season does not make him the savior, either.

I think he is a DECENT coach, but that is about it.

Just to put it in perspective. We could be Michigan right about now. Too many injuries on defence has sunk this team. An explanation of why Redfield isn't out there is in order however. The only thing wrong with the offense is turn over plagued Golson.

ND can score on anyone, even the #1 and #2 defenses in the country. Folston put up 134 yards on the nations best run defense.

Fix the defense and ND wins more games.

You're correct that injuries have sunk this team. That being said, if Kelly is truly a good to great coach, then he should be able to overcome this. This isn't a question of whether he's bad, he's clearly not, but you have to think that his play calling and in-game adjustments have been less than stellar. I think UL's defense isn't as good as they're ranked. Outside of FSU (who put up 42 points on them), who have they played that has a decent offense? Miami and maybe Boston College.

I think Folston's rushing had more to do with his own merits rather than Kelly. I am glad that Kelly finally decided to run the ball on 1st down for once. That being said, the 1st half was abysmal across the board, and the defensive adjustments wore off after the first 2 drives. Kelly has to do a better job of calling the plays and getting them in ricky tick, or hire somebody who can do the job better.

BINGO, and that's the problem. How long is "decent" going to be enough? Is this what the norm is for ND? Just decent? That's my fear is that Kelly may be doing the best he can, and ND is just doomed to wallow in mediocrity with the occasional good season here and there.

Watching the game BK didn't fuck up the hold on the fg at the end,he didn't miss 100 plus tacklelike the rest ofthe team, didn't fumble the ball away 30yards backwards,100000 injuries...get off his d ick people there isn't going to be a miracle season with freshman on d

He did start and kept playing two of the players (Tranquill and Collinsworth) who were responsible for many of those missed tackles.

Brady Hoke had a great year with someone else's recruits too. 11-2 his first year, wasn't he? Just saying.

Oh, and we're going to finish with the same record as Brady Hoke this year, lol.

I honestly don't know at this point, but I'm leaning towards no. It's year 5 and his team regularly implodes at inopportune times, can't do simple things like hold a snap on a FG, and struggles (loses) with Northwestern at home. Sure, he's lost some players to injuries, suspensions, and attrition, but I don't think he's done a great job at adding depth along the front 7. It's year 5 and there are too many times where the opposing team is able to run the ball down our throats and there's nothing we can to stop it.

He routinely makes questionable in-game decisions, seems to sit better players in favor of lesser ones (i.e. Redfield), and seems to have a hard time at adding good depth at needed positions (particularly along the defensive line).

He's the best coach we've had since Holtz, but that says nothing, because it's not hard to be better than the previous three clowns we've brought in (okay, Davie wasn't a clown, just overmatched). It seems like the overall talent level is better now than it's been in a while too. At some point however, you have to start seeing results. We've lost 4+ games in now four of the five seasons he's been here. ND did not hire him to lose 4+ games four out of every five years. That simply isn't debatable.

If he fails to win 10+ games next season, with the returning talent ND should have coming back, then I want him gone. He needs to hold onto the guys currently on the team who could potentially want out for various reasons as well. ND has had far too much attrition since BK has been here. At first, you think it's a coincidence, but then you start to wonder if maybe BK has something to do with all of the attrition we've had.

10+ wins next season or bust.

It's not NW bad, but Kelly is still at fault, especially for the playcalling in the 1st half which was downright abysmal, and the time management/play calling in the redzone which cost them a shot at 6. Let's not forget leaving Tranquill and Collinsworth in to get torched.

Spot on. Tried to rep but I have to spread it around first I guess. We have so many underclassmen in the game it's ridiculous. The plus side is all those guys are getting experience in big football games. That can only help them in the future.

I agree that Kelly is a very good coach but that is a shit reason. Many coaches had great careers but suffered at the end (Bowden, Carr, Paterno, Mack Brown, etc).

What is more important is do we believe that the believe is going in the right direction?
