Is it just me or do most of the articles coming out about the 2010 Irish football team (be it general articles or in-depth looks at a player or position) seem to have a certain sneer or snark directed at Charlie Weis. Very rare to find anything overt (except in articles from blogs), but the regular and regular football press seems to always have an aside or a comment or something that is just derogatory about the Weis years/style/etc.

Now, don't get me wrong, I understand he didn't accomplish what we had hoped and I was not his biggest backer as I hollered at my TV time and time again so it can definitely be looked at as deserved. However, it just seems to be getting more and more prevalent in the last couple weeks (since practice started).

I was a big Charlie Weis supporter, and defended him til he lost to Michigan last year. The play calling in the game was atrocious, there was no reason UM shouldve been close.

I thought last year was going to be a great year, I thought Tenuta would have fielded atlast a average defense, and we would have finally had a balanced attack on offense. I expected CW to be through with his "learning curve" when it came to coaching college ball. But, for whatever reason, he just did not get it. The team fell apart.

Now, I really do not like looking back at the past...always trying to look forward. But, people will talk about the past until they have something positive to speak about in the future.

Remember all the Ty talk? That never ended.

Can you cite some articles? Heard to comment on what you read if don't see the same thing.

I too was a big Weis supporter. He really did some good things with the offense, but as everybody already knows, he just was not a HEAD FOOTBALL COACH. He could have been an OC and been fantastic, but unfortunately, he was the HC. I think he left the program in a much better shape than what he received after Ty got the axe, but he will never live down the last years he put ND football through. 2007 was somewhat expected, but still unbearable, 2008 was supposed to be an improvement, and that wasn’t seen until the damn bowl game, and 2009 was just a huge letdown in every way shape or form.

The sad part is that if Kelly actually does well, then Weis will only continue to get pub in the abysmal group of failures to take over at ND since Holtz.

ever since we fired Ty the media has been on a mission to tear down ND. Charlie was the whipping boy(the media hated him).

we will never be without the pundits that take shots and laugh at our misfortunes, and write articles with harsh undertones.

but i feel since kelly has arrived the press has backed off a bit because they actually like kelly and/or they know kelly will win at notre dame and are insecure and afraid.

Truth is Charlie is a damn good football coach, came in at a horrible time in ND and really couldnt relate to the college game. So he will be unfortunately remembered by most irish fans and others as a failure, but he took the job when no one wanted it, recruited the lights out gave me some great memories and i wish him well in the future. The way he left the program is the only reason why we were able to lure coach kelly away. well that and about 3 million bucks.

gave you great memories? idk bout u but I have horrible memories under Weis. I get sad whenever I hear or sing the alma mater because it's so ingrained and affiliated to all the losses over the past 3 seasons.

Losses to Navy twice at home, loss to airforce, loss to a 2-8 Syracuse team, loss to Uconn, and many other horrible losses. We were 1 inch away from losing to San Diego State! What makes it worse is that our players played like crap. Didn't even give it their best shot because they weren't coached up properly.

Weis had to go

Let's see the comeback at Michigan State, The UCLA game, Helped develope Brady Quinn into a Notre Dame great. Yeah there were a lot of bad times, but there were also some pretty cool ones to

I don't have that big of a problem with taking shots at the previous regime. Weis did it too when he started here. It is part and parcel with coaching at the most loved (and most hated) university in the land. Where I draw the line is where they take personal attacks on Coach Weis. Either about his apprearance or his perceived arrogance or whatever. Say whatever you want about his coaching while at ND. I am sure he would be the first one to agree that he didn't cut it. Not for lack of effort because I think he did his best.

I also agree he left the program in much, MUCH better shape that Ty-Boob Daviewillingham did.

I also think the players need to have a little tough love and be shown they weren't good enough the past 3 years or so. If that has to happen by calling out the previous coaching staff, I think it is a better way to do it than calling out young players. Call out the past coaches, they can handle it and got paid to take those criticisms.

I love a line in one of the practice update videos - I am not sure if the Oline coach says it or what, but guys are doing a drill and you hear someone off camera say (paraphrased) "I know soft! I just have to play video from last season! I want toughness!!!" Priceless!

I wanted Charlie to do well because he took no $%#@ from the media. This is now all in for Kelly as it should be -and he will be perfect for this university. All the Charlie stuff is the natural progression as Kelly does well. In the end I think Charlie Weis will be remembered for great recruiting and good with the players but lets turn the page as we have a stud to lead this team. I suspect that even Charlie will be happy with Kelly's success. He's a Notre Dame man. In my humble opinion he gave his all.

Nice. I would be a liar if I claimed to be an ND fan, then knock on Weis, an ND son.

I was not at all pleased with the hiring of Davies, and was completely outraged (thank goobly woobly it was simply in front of my lady who quickly dispelled her promise of sexy stuff after my outrage...) with the hiring of fooking Willinghand.. The media pulled a full frontal assault on ND to hire Willinghand and ND caved in. That was my opinion. I correctly predicted the collapse of his empire, almost to the exact minute of the exact game.

What were we talking about?

Oh yep. The hiring of O'Leary. Media said ND should be embarrassed by the hiring. I wasn't excited at all by the hire, but no need for ND to be embarrassed. Why not trust Georgia Tech?

I love the Patriots I wanted Weis to do well as much as anyone I thought him going back to Notre Dame was match made in Heaven . The Michigan game last year sealed it for me the coaching in that game was so bad I just couldn't feel good about him coaching here anymore. If Charlie is taking heat for a bad job oh well that's why he made the money he did and still makes. . We as fans are what is keeping Notre Dame relevant not the product we have put on the field for last several years for sure. That being said I drank the kool aid with Weis and Im almost damn near drowning on Kelly's kool aid. It's not a easy job here we all know and so do they but, he took the job failed and now are hopes are on Kelly shoulders . The school gave him too much too soon I thought was right desicion at time too but, sorry Charlie you will be know as a failed coach at the greastest college football school ever !!!!
Heck of offence coordinator though.

Weis is a perfect example of the Peter Principle. He was a terrible college head coach.

Willingham and the media are the perfect example of the Peter Principle. And whoever hired Willingham.

Weis' job was to fix stupid. You can't fix stupid.

Weirdly I guess, I never think about Coach Weis. We [ND] hired him, and it turned out that head college football coach wasn't his profession. I have cringed initially every time we've gone "soft" and hired a coach who hasn't really proven anything [as an exceptional performance in the same type of job] yet. ND should never have to do that. I'm sure that Coach Weis tried to do the best he could, and in some pieces of being a college coach he did well. The other pieces were unfortunately disastrous. In a way it was the administration that got what it deserved. We the fans got the pain of their "romantic" decision making. I wish the old coach well in his new position, even though I hate the results he often achieved. It would make me feel a LOT better about him as a "loyal son of ND" if he contributed his extra and [now that he has another lucrative job] unnecessary owed money back to the University. That, of course is really living in a romantic world.

We can be happy that Weis left the program stocked with talent, but he beat one team that ended the year ranked.

One team in five years.

What's worse, the lack of big wins or the bad losses?

I wrote about this at One Foot Down, check it out Domers.
