So as many of us experienced over the weekend IE likes to, from time to time, go into lockdown mode. The database error makes it impossible to access any of the site. In the website suggestions thread many users were talking about different ways that we could all keep in contact when/if another IE blackout occurs. One suggestion that I brought up that seemed to be pretty well received was to start an IE subreddit.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, Reddit is an entertainment, social networking, and news website where registered community members can submit content, such as text posts or direct links, making it essentially an online bulletin board system. It's one of the larger social media websites around.
I went ahead and started us a subreddit. You can find the page here: reddit.com/r/IrishEnvy
I don't really know my way around the CSS used for editing the sub so right now it is kind of basic. If it seems like we are getting mild traffic I will go ahead and invest some time and actually customize the sub to make it closer to the IE we know and love.
USERNAMES
For those of you who don't have a reddit account I would suggest trying to register on reddit with the same name you use here on IE. Some of your more common usernames like IrishLax, IrishLion, BobD, and such are bound to be taken. For instance GATTACA was already taken when I tried to register it earlier. So for anyone that finds their username already taken just add _IE to the end of your username. So on reddit you will see me as GATTACA_IE. That way we can identify everyone.
For those of you that already use Reddit under another username, I would think about creating another profile just for the IE subreddit. There is an extension for all of the major web browsers known as RES. If you google Reddit RES you should be able to easily find the download link. One of the awesome features of RES after you download it is that it makes switching between accounts as easy as a single click. That way you can keep using your Reddit account for everything, and switch to your IE account easily if you want to post in our sub.
Even if you don't plan on visiting the subreddit everyone should create an account and bookmark the page. That way in the event that another blackout occurs we all have a way of getting in touch with one another.
EDIT: Oh also forgot to say if you do create an account hit the subscribe button over on the right hand side of the IrishEnvy page. That way if you don't bookmark it or remember the exact page all you have to do is go to Reddit and /r/IrishEnvy will show up on the front page.
