I honestly don't think I could name a single Led Zeppelin song if my life depended on it.

I mean, seriously. They had a grand total of ZERO number one songs and only five or six that cracked the top 40. The Beatles had the top five songs at ONE TIME. I don't understand why everyone here has an infatuation with very talented musicians... who made shitty songs. How can a band be the greatest of all time without a single #1? Sad!

I lurk far more than I post, but I just had to chime in here...

I've voted in every round and voted for Zep here. The only band who gives Zep a run for their money, imo, is Pink Floyd. I often consider them 1A and 1B in my favorite classic rock bands.

Pink Floyd was far more progressive and, well, just weird, but they wrote some beautiful songs. Zep just epitomizes classic rock, imo. Plant was a great front man - he had the look, voice, charisma, pretty much everything. Jimmy Page was the heart and soul though. For my money, the only lead guitarists who were on his level were Hendrix and Clapton.

The Stones were great and definitely deserving of a top 5 slot. I get why the Beatles made it even though I've never cared for most of their music (they're classic pop, not classic rock, imo). The Eagles? I'm not sure how they made the top 10, let alone top 5. The Dude would agree with me anyway.

It's been fun following these threads for the last few weeks!

Then you are missing out. They literally had at least four fantastic full albums from beginning to end regardless of their pop culture popularity. Physical Grafitti and II are teo of the best albums ever.

I voted for the Eagles (though I was hoping that CCR would make it, sad). Of the bands listed Hotel California is my favorite song from them (with close second/third for and Beatles "Come Together" and Pink Floyd "Another Brick in the Wall part II").

GTFOH. Seriously. Led Zeppelin IV sold more than any Beatles album. Plus the Beatles are a pop group.

Thank Christ the who didn't make this list. Zeppelin is the closest thing to Sabbath here so they get my vote.

You can't name a single song but know they're all shitty? Okay....

I'd suggest giving them a shot, SOOOO many great songs... Hey Hey What Can I Do, What Is and Should Never Be, Tangerine, Gallows Pole, Nobody's Fault but Mine... each are fantastic and not even regularly mentioned w their greatest songs...

Great songs. Bring It On Home, The Ocean, When the Levee Breaks, In the Evening, and Out On the Tiles are some of my favorite "tier 2" Zeppelin songs.

Zeppelin barely released any singles, if the band got their way they never would have released any which I think is kind of cool.

How can you like rock music but not Zep!??

Yup, 5 Pantheon albums:

Zeppelin I
Zeppelin II
Zeppelin IV
Houses of the Holy
Physical Graffiti

I've always been partial to HotH because it displays their vast range of styles without sacrificing quality. Love that album.

If you think the criteria for a band being good is how many number one songs they have, then I don't know how to help you.

True on Zep IV, although the Beatles do have a massive lead in album sales and overall records sold.

Beatles "1" is the highest selling album of the 2000's decade, both in the US and worldwide. They have some truly mind-boggling sales stats.

It never makes any top 10 Zep song lists, but The Rain Song is actually my favorite Zep song.

"This is the mystery of the quotient, quotient. Upon us all, upon us all a little rain must fall."

One of my favorite lyrics. George Harrison told Jimmy Page they needed to write some ballads and we got this song. :eek:grin:

Yep. No doubt. HoH is phenom as well. When I hear Dancing Days I always have to listen to rest of the album. The last four songs are burnt into my cerebral cortex.

I love Zeppelin and even have a Zep t-shirt. However, there has been scandal ongoing for awhile now about their plagarism of other artists work including a high profile court case.

Led Zeppelin's 10 Boldest Rip-Offs - Rolling Stone

7 Songs That Led Zeppelin Ripped Off : Exclusives : Music Times

Given this history, I wouldn't make them the best because how much of their work is truly theirs versus them taking something from someone else and giving it their sound and style?

The vast majority of the songs in question have really weak cases.

You're either looking at them nicking a small part of a very old blues song or borrowing a line of a lyric. Do people REALLY care about it that much?

Something like "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" is probably the worst but it's a cover of a cover and they eventually gave credit. Whatever.

Jimmies not rustled.

Your opinion. I am a fan, but don't wear the rose colored glasses. A lot of bands stole work during that period of rock, but Zep is considered the most famous and prolific thieves. That's not to say their stuff isn't great.

For the poll, I don't think the 'best band' means as much as acknowledging this was the best era of popular music in history, with thousands of good contributors.

Buts that is all the british rock wave was really... it was british bands discovering old AfroAmerican blues music to and reintroducing it to middle class white people. They took 12bar blues and just varied it by adding traditional folk music from the UK and America.
For those who don’t know, the roman numerals represent the degree of the major scale. The C major scale consists of the following notes: C, D, E, F, G, A, B. So in the key of C: I7 = C7, IV7 = F7, V7 = G7.

The basic 12 bar blues consists of the following:

4 measures of the I chord
2 measures of the IV chord
2 measures of the I chord
1 measure of the V chord
1 measure of the IV chord
1 measure of the I chord
1 measure of the I chord

Rose-colored glasses would be more like denying the nicking. We're talking about orders of magnitude less than Vanilla Ice here. And it's for deep album cuts, mostly.

From an artistic viewpoint I couldn't care less. The producing in today's music is far worse.

It's one of music's best fake outrages.

I mean, in incredibly shallow terms yes.

On the Beatles... they have about ten or so songs I love, all timers, but their early stuff is too bubblegum and I can't think of one album on theirs that I can stand listening to all the way through... too high of a ration of 'wtf is this!?' songs... I've always felt that while they belong in discussion, theyre overrated... I appreciate them more for their trailblazing than for their actual music/songs in retrospect.

Also, I hate Pink Floyd... prob the single biggest musical mystery to me... beyond Comfortably Numb I can't stand anything they've ever put out... just me.

Craziest thing to me, I like all of these bands. I have to search real far to find rock bands from the 60's and 70's that I don't care for that much.

I don't understand how someone likes the Stones, but not the Beatles. Or Cream, but not the Who. They're all so good.
