I understand where your coming from, but he (Williams) needs to grow up.
He's 20 years-old, I think that's what he's in the process of doing. How old is Charlie Weis? Who is the authority figure in this situation? Shouldn't Charlie--as the coach, adult and mentor--have pulled Ian aside and said "We don't air our dirty laundry in the media. You may complain during films, you can stop by my office to express your concerns or you can commiserate with your teammates but don't make that mistake again".
Is it honestly productive for Charlie to respond the way he did? If your kid was throwing a fit in the toy store because you wouldn't buy her/him the toy he/she wanted, would the correct reaction be for you to start throwing a fit because the child wouldn't leave the store??
Lots of times you will be forced to do things that you do not agree with, or that you think may be done better in a different way. Take work for instance, I do not agree with alot of the policies at my work, but I follow them, and enforce them when needed.....This is no different, if he doesnt like what the coaches are telling him to do, or doesnt agree with it, then he needs either suck it up and make it work, or he needs to quit the team.
I'm quite certain that he's probably dedicated a lot of time, effort and heart to the program. To just quit isn't an option. He made a bad choice, nobody disagrees with that (or shouldn't); but to carry on like he's a sage old man is ridculous.
mouthing off towards the coaching staff is not acceptable on any level of football (please see Larry Johnson).
If Larry Johnson were still productive the team would've released a statement along the lines of: "While Larry's actions were regrettable, the entire Chiefs organization stands behind him. Larry made a mistake, he admitted it and we've moved on". But Larry Johnson isn't productive anymore and so the Chiefs simply told him to hit the bricks.
Self-discipline is a trait you learn from football, at least I did, and its a skill that I use everyday in my work-life; especially during the times where I am extremely frustrated at things beyond my control.
Yes, but unlike Ian Williams, you're not 20 years-old with thousands of kids on campus and millions of fans expecting the world from you. At the end of your work day you don't have 100 microphones and 10 television cameras jammed in your face. You don't do your work on national television.
