Christmas night, the wife and I have a fire in the fireplace and open a bottle of good wine. Then our tradition is to do it on the floor by the Christmas tree. What can I say? I'm a traditionalist!

Pics or it didn't happen!!!

Oh... I forgot to mention my Wife and her mom having the traditional Holiday spliff! Lol.

Now thats the holiday spirit. :wordyo:

No thanksgiving traditions here.

Our family used to do the traditional Christmas; church Christmas eve, presents in the morning, but the past few years we decided to take trips instead (Our place on the beach, Turks and Caicos, Dominican Republic..) but this year since my dad sold his business and my parents are selling the house we are going back to the good ol' traditional way one last time.

Next year it is back to the tropics. haha

I'm sure you do, from the bushes outside the window while watching both of our wives giving me the royal sampler...

I don't like to rush Christmas, so I'll stick with Thanksgiving for now.

Our Thanksgiving traditions mostly involve food. I normally try to take off the Wednesday before because it makes Thxgvg Day a bit more relaxed to do the prep work a day ahead. That calls for snacks, like chorizo with apples slices and blue cheese on the side, along with a nice autumn beer or cocktails as we prep and we listen to George Winston Autumn or maybe some Irish harp CDs.

Here's the traditional menu:

Turkey (brined overnight -- makes a big difference)
Sausage cornbread sage stuffing
Dirty Rice
Mashed potatoes
Gravy (on this day, must be made with the giblets and drippings, the old way)
Roasted sweet potatoes and rosemary
Cranberry orange relish
Regular cranberries
Red and white wine

Then maybe an odd dish or two that varies year to year -- eg, roasted asparagus, carrots, succotash, squash

Take a break for an hour or so, and then finish up with coffee (and Canadian club for me), chestnuts, pumpkin and apple pies, and maybe a little ice cream for those who prefer it to pie

Not to be too melodramatic, but I usually spend a little time out back, drinking bourbon and thinking about the year past, because it's a season that brings a year to a close, and that's what it's for. I think about family that is gone, and my own kids growing up, so so fast, and wishing I could do those times again, not differently, but just again, because they were so much fun and I loved how they were then, but it's sad because time passes and I get older, and all of those we love, change, and some of them die before us. But it's the way of the world, and life, and I try to remember to thank God for his blessings, because I know that, alone, I am not good for much.

Will discuss Christmas later; Christmas traditions are more attenuated, because it is a season, which means more time for more good traditions and activities. I think the essential loss of Advent and the 12 Days of Christmas is one of the saddest things about the modern age.

I'm cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the first time (the bulk of it, I always cook something) this year... Here is the menu:

-Turkey (Brining it in water, brown sugar, cranberry and spices for a day prior, then flash cooking)
-Balsamic Blackened Brussel Spouts w/ Shallots and Potatoes.
- Homemade Mashed Potatoes
-Corn (Just high quality canned corn, drained and in a dish for this one)
-Pumpkin Pie from scratch (The Sugar Pumpkin is from my garden)
-Stuffing (Basic homemade recipe my family has used for years… very good)
-Salt Pork Collard Greens
-Hard apple cider in the crock pot
-Homemade cranberry sauce
-Cornbread (though this will be boxed)

Family is bringing Apple Pie, Green Bean Casserole, and Waldorf Salad…

-Even though this year is with my family I am also getting Filipino Lechon (their version of roasted pig) from the local Filipino market… very good stuff. It'll bring the wife's tradition in and we all like this much more than American style Ham.

I’m really looking forward to it, I am a big cook to begin with and have made every one of the above except for the turkey by themselves and I am confident I can pump all that out without major hassle.

I think we need an IE recipes thread.

As a Filipino, I can confirm Lechon is fucking delicious.

I'm actually debating bringing adobo to the table also, or seeing if my wife can fry up some lumpia, (though I doubt we'll have room for that)... but we are on the edge of food overkill as it is, and Lechon most fits the American holidy eats out of the three... anyway, filipino food is BOMB

You have just become my new favorite poster here.

My girlfriend LOVES lumpia. Every time I bring her to a family party she's always like "oo will they have that delicious eggroll thing there??"

OMG, they are so much better than Chinese egg rolls though aren't they??... :)

Lumpia>>>Egg rolls

Pancit>>> Chow Mein

and I really like Chinese too as a general rule.

One of the many wonderful things of our multicultral nation is the food...

I wrote about our menu, but my Italian grandmothers would cook circles around me. They would make everything on my current menu (but leave out the dirty rice) plus a huge antipasto, Italian wedding soup and homemade spaghetti and meatballs. They were sick.

Ha, I use that comparison because if you aren't familiar with Pancit or Lumpia that's the only thing that you can really compare them to when tyring to explain it to someone... they are so much better though.

My wife and her family are from South Africa and have lamb 2-3 different ways. It's just awesome.

Best yams ever;

Boil 2-3 SP's and peel off skins, then slice into circles

Mix in
Brown sugar (1 cup)
Orange juice (3/4 cup)
Ginger (1 TBS)
Nutmeg (1TPS...don't fuck up with this one)
Butter (6 TBS)
Bourbon (1/4th cup.. tell your family you needed the whole bottle, and drink the rest)

Bring to boil, then cook for 3 mins.

Place sliced SP's in a oven dish. Drizzle over the sause you just made if yoy're not too wasted. 350, 45 mins.

Take out and cover in mini marshmallows and chopped pecans. Broil for 5 mins on high.

Take out and enjoy accolades from the family while, that shitbag uncle that is always upstaging you, has a defeated look in his eyes. Then pass out.
