During the Pittsburgh game in 2008, Hammond mistook James Alridge for...

(drumroll, please)

BARRY GALLUP JUNIOR.

Barry Gallup = 5'9", 180 pounds, white

James Aldridge = Big black dude

But their numbers look so much like, Gallups 21 and Aldridge 34 ...

It's painfully obvious that neither of these guys are ND fans. The guys assigned to cover every ND home game. They suck, they mix up players names, seem to love when the opponent does well, and generally are a bad representation of the Irish on national TV. You would think, with ND paying so much the rights to the games, they would want someone pro-ND in there. I'd rather have Mark May than those two jackrags.

We seem to get this thread every week (with the exception of Michigan and Purdue weeks).

N.B. NOTRE DAME DOES NOT WANT ANY ANNOUNCER WITH AN ND CONNECTION.

Neither does NBC!

Its by mutual agreement. Back when this contract came to be ND's AD Dick Rosenthal was negotiating as part of the CFA, College Football Association, which consisted of 66 major football programs that were unhappy with the NCAA's handling/interference with TV rights back then. CFA was negotiating with ABC but ND, and one or two others balked. According to Rosenthal NBC approached him and proposed an exclusive arrangement between NBC (which would have been shut out of college football broadcasts) and the most watched college team in football history, ND. ABC screamed foul! About 60 other members of the CFA also screamed foul. ND signed an agreement in 1990. (Which lead to the demise of the CFA, the rise of the BCS, and the arms race for Conference/Bowl Tie-ins/Revenue Sharing Agreements.) Where fans from Michigan, Southern Cal, and Alabama hated ND, now all the other teams in their conferences hated them as well as the ND/NBC agreement was seen by them as costing them money.)

Because of the other negotiations flap (ABC) and because NBC would not be showing any other teams than ND, NBC wanted to appear impartial and suggested "impartial" announcers not connected with ND so they wouldn't be called the Notredame Broadcasting Company (which they get called anyway).

As then Notre Dame President Monk Malloy wanted ND to be the Stanford/Princeton of the Midwest he agreed completely with NBC. The last thing he wanted was an ex-jock like Paul Hornung seemingly being "The Voice of Notre Dame". For those that don't recall, ND President Malloy was the guy that had Fr. Beauchamp "supervise" Lou Holtz, hired AD Wadsworth, hired AD Kevin White, hired Davie, O'Leary and Willingham, and put the kabosh on hiring Gruden and Rick Majerus for basketball.

Anyone remember NBC Announcer Chris Collinsworth, back in the early days of the contract skewering Holtz and ND at every opportunity? He knew football but went out of his way to stick it to ND. Hammond and Hayden stumble at times, Collinsworth was vicious.

You can complain and make suggestions but nothing is going to come of it. If Hammond is replaced it will be by someone else without a passion for Notre Dame calling the games.

Pagna, Critqui, et al will get no consideration. Shades of the 1800s N.I.N.A. days.

No Irish Need Apply!

That said, the words to the alma mater scrolled at the bottom of the screen in post game. First time I have ever noticed that. A bit pretentious for sure. No wonder people hate us.

I actually liked that. My daughter (9) who watches the games with me always tries to sing along but isn't so good with the words made good use of it, but I can see your point. However to that end the fact that they even broadcast it can viewed as pretentious. Personally I don't care what they add to it so long as they keep doing it

Early in the season, Harrison Smith made a tackle and they announced him as Darrin Walls. I hear NFL announcers make these mistakes all the time, but they usually correct themselves immediately. They are awful but I do find their blundering mistakes amusing.

I'm with you. First time I've notice it there and the though ran through my mind that millions of fans that love ND, and are not alumni, finally know the words aren't "blah, blah, blah, love thee Notre Dame!"

Even at the games if you've ever listened to the crowd sing or watch their lips it's like the crowd at a baseball game singing the National Anthem, everybody knows the last line and mostly mumbles through the rest.

Maybe it's strange but I've never even thought of NBC's coverage of the alma mater as pretentious. Does any other network, ABC, CBS, ESPN, Big Ten, etc stay with live coverage of the home school singing the alma mater with their games?

Anybody recall when NBC started showing the alma mater? Did it start with the Weis era? Not the singing, the coverage. I remember Holtz going over to address the student body when he resigned but don't recall the alma mater with Davie or Willingham. Of course I've been trying to forget a lot about those eras.

I've been impressed with Charlie politely cutting off the on field commentator post game with, "Excuse me, I've got to join the team for the alma mater."

The NFL guys and the Game of the Week annoucers may get cut some slack, despite being professional announcers, as they do have two new rosters of players each week. But Hammond and Hayden have the same the names for half the players but seem to struggle more with the names on the team they seem the most.

I know I've heard Hammond call JC, Jimmy Carson at least twice now.

I believe CW instituted the singing of the alma mater in front of the student section after the game, it was a tradition that he wanted to emphasize. also his deliberate walk, not run or jog, from the tunnel to sidelines.

Pat Hayden was a Rhodes Scholar and his education seems to be superior to many making comments on this forum. He has always been complimentary to ND and its program. Hammond makes a comment that is true, and was highlighted all week. Sooooo??? And how this really makes a difference in the overall picture of ND football escapes me.

Are you serious, they SUCK MAN! I Broke my flat Screen listen to those two retards. I hate them, they should be fired and you need to get slapped.

I would call them the Tripshits. The bozos in the booth and the bimbo on the field.

I actually kinda like Alex, I can't stand that dumb bitch that ESPN uses, Holly Rowe I think her name is. OMG she looks like a hooker!

How about Pat Haden on fourth and one?

"Remember Brady Quinn was SO good on quarterback sneaks?" No, dickhead. Why don't you stop telling me before I beat you over the head with a shillelagh?

Hammond:

"Here's Michael Jackson in at running back. Clausen fakes it to Jackson, pumps once...and goes for the endzone...for MC Hammer! CAUGHT AT THE TWENTY YARD LINE!"

2005 - Tennessee, Hammond -

"Quinn goes for the endzone..." Samardzija caught the ball on the twenty-five.

She's an absolute moron & asks the most retarded questions. Honestly she makes female sports reporters look bad. I watch several other sports & this trend of female reporters is on a huge rise especially with ESPN. Most of them are pleasantly & surprisingly very good at it & very knowledgeable about the particular sport they cover. Flanagan could single handedly set them back 10 years shes so stupid.

However I do always love the the look of absolute astonishment on Charlies face when she asks her ridiculous questions. Always good for a laugh.

To be honest shes so dumb I cringe when shes on the screen. I really don't recall every thinking that she was appealing in anyway. Not that she isn't, it's just so overshadowed by her (lack of) intelligence.

nbcsportshelp@nbcuni.com They gave no response to my mail telling them to 'do better' and Barry Gallup Jr is not James Aldridge. Sorry ClausenToFloyd I had to borrow that one to let them know our distaste.

How about John Madden?

"Jimmy Clausen is a quarterback. He's supposed to throw the ball to the receivers. When he throws the ball to a receiver, it's called a pass."

My two favorite Madden quotes:

"Normally, the team that scores the most points, WINS THE GAME!"

And secondly:

"The bigger guys tend to be Linemen. The smaller guys, receivers."

Easy on Madden now. Love that guy even when he started losing it. Grew up on his & Summerall's voice echoing throughout my house every Sunday afternoon. Somehow doesn't seem right without them. Miss those guys.
