Completely agree.We are 2 or 3 or 7 mistakes from this being a complete blowout.We had this game in our hands and threw it away due to stupid turnovers, and just as bad penalties.True IRISH fans can get through this....it is just one game.I am just as pissed as anyone else....but we can still have a great season.

What I'd like to say is people need to take a step back from the Edge. Stop pointing the gun at Brian Kelly, and relax. First and foremost this is a game, meant to be enjoyed, not rip apart your very being.

Secondly, look at the stats. If this team puts up offensive and defensive statistics like they have this game they are going to win a lot of games. Yes turnover kill you, but in all your years of watching this game being played, have you seen a team turn the ball over like this for 12 games? No...This team is going to be fine.

Sure we all have high expectations. Sure we all want ND to be as great as it was in the past. Sure this (soon to be) loss strikes the core because it should have been a win. Reread that last sentence. This game should have been a win...why? Because we dominated on offense and defense. We drove the ball, we stopped them. We just beat ourselves.

If ND plays like this the rest of the year we will be fine. Look at VA Tech last year....lost to James Madison (not the predicted winner of an AQ conference), and still went to the BCS. I like this team, and I'm not gonna point fingers after one week of the season. I'll do that when the season is done.

This team has been dominant this game, except for the Redzone. How can you let 5 plays say doom for the whole season? I dont think you can. Sure they were 5 big plays, but 5 outta how many snaps is a good percentage. And this always average, this isnt going to happen every week.

When we beat Michigan next week, I wonder what everyone is going to say then.....

I dont think we need to do anything dumb like fire anyone...but if you take our offensive production and stingy defense as positives for Notre Dame in a home opener loss to a Big East Team we have problems...this kind of loss should NEVER be acceptable to anyone that follows a BCS caliber program much less Notre Dame. Facts are ugly sometimes..but we lost another game that we should have won......again...when this becomes only a "setback..we become Army.

Come on this isnt as Black and White as some people are trying to make this out to be.

Sure we lost and its unacceptable to lose to a team like USF, but look at the numbers, look at how many times we drove into the redzone, down to the one. Look at how ineffective the USF offense was.

There is talent in Southbend, and its starting to come out, We just gotta learn how to finish, and yes, it takes time to learn when you have been losing for the last 10+ years.

Throw Kelly under the bus, go on about how this team sucks, but I'm just gonna say, see you at the end of the season.

I see your optimism, and raise you some insane kool-aid drinking, plain nike-shoe and sweatpants wearing, sheet over my head when you find my body, escape to the mothership insanity: based on our defense and run-game today (if Wood can get enough gas to stay in the game...) I would like to think that we'll be like the 2000 UMiami Hurricanes: lost to Washington for their first game of the year and then went on to win 34 straight games...

Of course, this kool-aid has been heavily mixed with tequila all day, but this is probably the most encouraging loss I've ever seen. (And I didn't even see the end, because Versus preferred to show that Wildcats movie with Goldie Hawn!)

But seriously, defensively, we took a spread formation/option team, with 3 months to prepare for what they considered the most important game of the year, and handed them their a$$es. I mean, that guy Scott, #1 recruit in the nation what? B.J. Daniels Big East candidate what? I mean, how many possessions did they get compared to us? And how many did they convert into TD's? Our D front 7 is thuggish, and our DB's look like they're finally learning how to cover/tackle.

And defensively, they basically had one job: stop Floyd. And he ends up with over a dozen catches! For all intents and purposes, we told them we're throwing it to him and they still couldn't stop it. He's unstoppable (both figuratively and by definition).

Michigan is going to lose next week, as long as we don't hand them the game and make it impossible on ourselves.

This team will be fine. The offense and defense were great today, 5 turnovers rarely happens even for the worst teams. We just beat ourselves, and if Brian Kelly is half the coach I think he is, it will NEVER happen again.

I just wish people would stop with the stuff about how crappy USF is. And how the fact that they won the game, ND has no chance at sniffing 9 wins. USF is he favorites of the Big East, with a 3 year starter at QB. Before the game, USF was a team that could give ND a run for their money, and now they are barely above Florida Atlantic.

So many opinions switching back and forth. I'm just gonna stick with this and say ND goes 3-1 to start this year out.

And what I'm saying is most of the optimism of the past has been in the form of what USF is probably thinking right now. The fact they won, they beat ND at ND. They didnt turn the ball over, and made stops when they had to.

When in reality the game was ND's to lose, and they lost it themselves. Every year before under Willingham and Weis everything was smoke and mirrors. They may have won some games and looked good on paper, but even in their wins they looked like USF's win today. Being out gained, winning because the other team missed field goals and made other mental mistakes.

All this relates to the main point, the the so called "realist" posters, see this optimism all the time. Well there is reason for the optimism. Look at the numbers, if you took away the score and turnovers (which USF really only caused 1, the others were given to them). ND looks great. They look incredibly dominant actually.

This so called realism is looking at the past and then trying to place it on the here and now. Well the past isn't what we have. We have something that we haven't had for a long time. We just need to break the culture of losing that is in everyone's minds, including the players. But that takes a little more time then we all have thought. But know this, that time is REAL close. And I think the culture of losing stops at Michigan.

Why? Because today's was such a terrible loss that the players will be able to understand that they are going to be put in a position to win, they just have to do it themselves. And they finally have the talent and athleticism to do just that: win.

1. Holtz, Parseghian, Leahy........... all yellers. Hayes, Shembechler, Bryant, Royal............all did a LOT of yelling.

Why do you think that so many coaches feel like they have to either actively cheat, or look the other way when they see it? Because dumba$$ fans aren't happy with 11-1, it HAS to be 12-0. I want championships, too. But, first and foremost, I want athletes who are real students, and who go out and play football at a high level while exhibiting graciousness and class. THOSE are the standards that made ND special, and should not be lowered.
