Wasn't sure where to put this. I went to a wedding last night and at my table sat a couple with a son who played RB at LSU as well as a family who attended Notre Dame and who are known to be pretty wealthy in my area.

The LSU couple said their son was a PWO and earned a scholly under Coach O. They absolutely adored Coach O and were really upset when he got ran out of LSU. I asked about BK and the dad just shook his head, but the mom....she erupted in anger. They said everyone hates Kelly, he's a fraud, he's an asshole to everyone. When he showed up, he tried kicking every single kid off the team who played for coach O. As many as he could. Some just refused to quit/transfer. Their son being one of them. They said Kelly tried putting him on medical for no reason. They also said that (believe it or not, SEC jokes aside...) a lot of these kids are there because they want to go to school and earn a degree. Kelly set up practice schedules that often times were in direct conflict with classes and expected them all to skip class, claiming school isn't important at LSU, and that only football is. It wasn't shocking for me to hear this, but I have to admit, hearing it first hand from player parents just hit home a bit harder.

The wealthy family at the table had a late addition to the reception. Their father (Mr. X.) flew in unexpectedly to surprise everyone. The father, in his own words, is on the athletic admin board for ND. He's one of the money guys. He attended ND back during the Parseghian era and his stories were pretty fun to listen to. We talked about Urban Meyer, Kelly, NIL, Jack and Pete, Father Jenkins, the Ludwig fiasco, Denbrock, Freeman, Northern Illinois, etc. I was pretty shocked how open he was to talking (his son-in-law later told me that he was shocked how much he talked as well, maybe he'd had more to drink than he thought. haha). Although, he did seem genuinely surprised I knew so much about the program and maybe that's why he felt comfortable talking (shoutout IE and ISD and II for all of the content I ingest.) Most of his references were one or two sentences and then a "read between the lines" comment before moving on to the next topic. But still, it was fun to have that convo with someone who's worth (allegedly) hundreds of millions of dollars (if not billions, as projected by some) and who pulls the levers at ND when it comes to money.

Back in 2005, Fr Jenkins took over for Fr Malloy. During this time ND was heavily courting Urban Meyer to become the next coach after firing TW. Jenkins put in a special request for Mr. X to fly with him to Utah to interview Meyer. Mr. X said no at first, unless Meyer was absolutely serious about the job. Essentially admitting that he didn't really trust him. He did end up going and during the interview, Meyer said he wouldn't consider signing anything without talking to his father first. Evidently, it took awhile, and caused even more distrust. Ultimately Jenkins and Mr. X felt like they were getting screwed over. And Meyer ended up signing with Florida instead. Twenty years later, and Mr. X was still visibly upset about not landing Meyer back then.

Mr. X confirmed that they all pretty much hated Brian Kelly. Jack was the reason he got to stay as long as he did. Jack defended Kelly based on his win percentage so they essentially allowed Jack to make that call and ride it out. No one was shocked when Kelly left. They all knew he would, just didn't know where or when exactly it'd happen. Jack was Mr. X's lawyer prior to taking the ND AD position and Mr. X respects him a lot. He said Jack was a big reason that ND athletics have taken the leaps they've taken in many sports, not just football. Which lead me to ask about Pete. Mr. X said, "Pete's my golf buddy. I have high hopes for him. He's going to get ND to take that next step." Whatever that means, he wouldn't divulge.

In terms of collective money, he said ND is doing just fine. When I asked if Riley was making $2m to play like crap, he laughed and said, "It's $1.8m, but yeah..." I asked how angry the donors are with ND losing to a team like NIU and if it effects Freeman in any way. He shook his head and basically just said, it's not ideal, but they love and support Freeman. Which lead me into coordinator support. I asked about the Ludwig fiasco and he said even he doesn't know what happened with that. He didn't think it had anything to do with a buyout or money. That it just didn't work out. I asked if it was because of that they went hard after Denbrock. He said "Denbrock was all Marcus. He recruited him back and we said money wasn't going to be an issue. We want to set the market for coordinator positions."

The last question I got in before the reception festivities began was "If you could hire any coach for ND, who would it be?" At first he wouldn't answer, but he ultimately said that they truly feel Freeman is someone who can grow into really great coach. They all genuinely like him and respect him.

Sorry for the long post, but I was pretty excited to have those conversations last night and then share them with the board. For whatever any of it is worth.

Happy to do it! I'm not a journalist. I asked those questions as a genuine fanatic of the team he and I both love. I think he picked up on that early on and was happy to participate in my curiosity. He's just one man, so it can be taken with grains of salt. I'm sure ND isn't ran by just him alone. Even still, it was a cool experience.

His kids are very down to earth. I know one in particular pretty well and she's always been very fun and authentic. Her husband (our family friend) is a diehard Purdue fan. We all had so much fun at his expense last night. haha

I will say that there's a good chance we'll see Billy Schrauth near the end of October. But I don't think we'll see Craig the rest of the year—very possible with Botelho as well. But again, we'll see what the official prognosis is tmrw."

Re: Ludwig - I ran into a beat reporter at a bar the night before the Ohio State game. We shot the shit for a good hour talking ball. From what he heard, he said that Ludwig had agreed in principle to be the OC, but then Whittingham talked him out of it.

My theory? There’s a rumor on the boards that ND got the wrong contract from Utah that had different buyout numbers, and that delay it caused allowed Whittingham to talk Ludwig out of leaving. So Utah maybe played some gamesmanship to get a PR win.

To add, Driskell is saying that he expects ND to announce season ending injuries to Botelho & Craig tomorrow. And Schrauth will be out only for a couple of weeks.

Leads me to believe that Schrauth has a mild knee sprain. Botelho likely a tear in the knee. Craig something similar.

Important to note, both Botelho & Craig are eligible for a medical redshirt season. Botelho's "redshirt" was a COVID one, he still has a medical one available.

Is there a practical use for that index? I don't think it's predictive or the best reflection of current strength. It's not like the committee uses it, either.

Coach O went 11-12 in his last two years and lost the players respect and the locker room. Couple that was some of his embarrassing and stupid comments and actions, it was inevitable. The stadium was empty and the few that were there were booing louder than at the ND-NIU game.

Also, I keep seeing that about BK and from a distance, I agree. He comes across as smug and an asshole, yet I keep seeing videos like the below that are a direct contrast and conflict with those assumptions. Who knows? Maybe the locker room likes him after all? He needs to coach better, however.

The family at my table genuinely loved Coach O and based on their story, that was in large part because he gave their son a scholarship after he earned it on the field. I'm sure as a parent, that would create a large bias when comparing Coach O and Kelly. It's also worth re-mentioning that it's one family's story. It doesn't necessarily need to reflect "everyone's" opinion (even though that's how they laid it out in discussion). Don't forget, a large portion of that team transferred out when Kelly arrived, and that is primarily the subset of people being referenced. It would be common for them to be disgruntled with BK. I met guys who played for Kelly back in his CMU days and they all said the same thing when he left Cincy for ND: The guy is a good coach, knows how to build a program, will win a lot of games....but, he's not a player's coach and most people think he's an asshole to work with and play for.

Mr. X said Jack made the call on Ludwig (but that he didn't know what happened). So it's definitely possible that Utah got in Ludwig's ear and made him shift gears, only for Jack to ultimately decide to move on. Who knows. There did seem to be a PR battle between the two schools, in an effort to save face, immediately following.

I thought schrauth was in the walking boot? So I take it that was Craig and schrauth must've been on crutches

Schrauth was in a boot and on crutches……Craig was on the sidelines sitting in a chair with his knee brace off (didn’t see him on crutches)
