No, I actually don't know, and I'd rather not find out more.

Matt Campbell is Frank Beamer or Bill Snyder. He may as well stay at Iowa State forever because it won't get any better for either party involved. He can come to South Bend as an opponent or an analyst.

Notre Dame beat Matt Campbell in the Camping World Bowl, the last pre Covid bowl game Notre Dame ever played. That's a fine memory I hope remains as such.
You don't remember people being pissed that Matt Campbell's name was even floated as a possibility when BK left for the Bayou?

So Tressel is President of YSU.... why not Freeman for President of ND as well as Football HC? He can do both. Think of the money the guy could raise. "Choose Hard" and open up your checkbook!

I think this means they treated his not very good son like every other slow white walk on?

And they should just rip off the band aid and have father pat start now
Yeah, I know we all now think Brian Kelly was always the asshole, but whatever went on with Nate Montana was probably incredibly awkward and complicated and messy for all involved, and it's possible that other parties didn't handle everything perfectly either.
Regardless, it's water under the bridge now. Glad Joe feels like he wants to be around the program again. Go Irish.

Not in particular. I have September 2023 in my rearview to the point that BK leaving might as well be a pyramid its so damn ancient.

Well trust me, people were not happy about any talk of Matt Campbell lol.
I can understand why. I think he's proven to the world who and at he is.

That guy leaves Iowa State, I don't think much will become of him. He'd better stay as long as they'll have him.

Joe was butthurt that Nate didn't become a star at ND. Fences have been mended.
Joe was mad that BK lied to him and his son, which is a completely reasonable stance to take. Given what has transpired since then, why would you give BK the benefit of the doubt?

Nate stunk up the field in the limited opportunities he got. He was arrested twice for underage drinking and driving under the influence while in South Bend. I don't think BK owed Joe anything. I don't like BK, but Joe wasn't very realistic about his kids' athletic abilities.

All of which doesn't excuse BK lying to the Montanas, which was why Joe had no use for BK or the ND administration who shovelled shit for him for 10+ years. It's weird that people still take BK's side in anything at this point, especially when the behavior at the heart of it (i.e., being a compulsive liar) has shown to be a defining characteristic of BK and not just some individual being "butt hurt."
Lied to him??? That’s strong.
Hardly the only people at ND or elsewhere that he lied to, not sure why you're so surprised.

What did BK tell the Montanas, that was a lie? And how do you know that?

I'm not taking anyone's side here. I'm guessing it was a pretty messy situation, and probably some misunderstandings all around. It seemed that way at the time, IIRC. I'm curious why you're so definitive.

This doesn't define anything as BK lying to the Montanas, but it does show that Joe and BK were at odds.

What’s your proof he lied? What did he lie to him about? Please do tell…

Exactly. There is a difference between not being a nice guy and lying to the program’s greatest living alum. I call Bullshit.

I always had a feeling that Kelly's ego felt a little threatened by the former players and didn't want their outside influence seeping into the program. After all, if you put Joe, The Bus or Rocket or a host of other legends in the same room with Kelly, Kelly's hand is probably the last one that gets shook.

I have no clue why many alum weren’t around as much with BK, but the change seems striking. I love that freeman seems to be including them as an integral part of the program. This is how it is at Ohio State. Hell, even a transfer out Joe Burrow showed up there last year for the ND game. Elite coaches at any level from HS to pro/Olympics in any sport understand the value of having alumni around.

Joe's hardly had a love fest with ND over the years. He got butthurt about Nate, and then he tried to tear down Rudy too. Everybody knows the film makers took some liberties with the screenplay for dramatic purposes, but the crux of the story is unchanged as is the inspiration. Joe tried to knock that down a peg. Despite being a freshmen the year Rudy graduated he tried to say Rudy was carried off the field as a joke, which was bogus according to other players. Joe took a big shit on the story when there was no reason to do it.

I'm not taking BK's side on anything. I side with Notre Dame, and for awhile there Joe had no love for ND. Seems like he only came back once Guinness was looking to make some cash off Joe's and Notre Dame's brands.

Now it doesn't preclude that Freeman can be more relational with Bus, Joe and Time Brown than Kelly was. That is the attractive part of Freeman and the unattractive part of Kelly: their personalities.

But an accusation of lying is something totally different.

After seeing Kelly fake a southern accent in his first week at LSU, I have no problem believing he’s a compulsive liar. Sorry but that’s nutty behavior. I enjoyed him as a coach and appreciate all he did but don’t miss him at all.

I would say the big question is "What did Kelly promise to Joe and the family?" but I don't really care. I think they're both kinda assholes. With BK there isn't really a question. Joe has cultivated this persona of being a bit of a dick to fans, charging for pictures, bad attitude away from cameras, etc.
