Football budget

It has been discussed by sports illustrated that success in college sports has a linear relationship with budget. Those teams that spend the most win. Given our recent record just what is the budget? ESPN reported Kelly's salary at 1.6 million. Harbaugh is north of seven million. If Kelly's salary is representative of the budget as a whole are we trying to win on the cheap?

Another site shows Brian making $4M... not sure what we can believe since it's not part of the public record AFAIK?

I do believe we need more assistant coaches. Bama has like... 65+?

I'm beginning to get the feeling ND has little care for being competitive on the national stage. They don't want to pay for a big time college coach, nor do I believe they'll pay enough for real good quality assistsnts

We spend plenty.
Teams are limited by the NCAA to nine assistant coaches. Alabama has a bunch of non-coach coaches (often called "analysts"). So do we. That's what Hudson was before he became DC, for instance.
We don't know exactly what Kelly makes because Notre Dame - as a nonprofit private school - doesn't have to report it until its tax returns become public record. There's a couple-of-year lag on that. It's also hard to know what a coach earns that doesn't come direct from the university (apparel contracts, etc.). But it's generally believed Kelly makes $4 to $5M, all in. That's certainly competitive.
Assistant coach salaries are sometimes an issue, but BVG was being paid north of $1M, which would put him in the top tier of DCs.
There's always someone with a newer, fancier practice facility or whatever. But ours isn't bad. Same goes for the Gug.
I think you could have argued ten years ago that lack of investment in football was a problem. I really don't think that's the case these days.

Kelly makes about 5 mil. Numbers are wrong. We spend enough on football in terms of raw dollars, only argument that can be made is that some of it is misallocated... like Campus Crossroads project instead of spending all that money on ridiculous athlete-only accommodations or support staff.

I'm not sure you can say that. The response is linear. 130 should beat 90

They don't want to change the culture. It would also mean bringing in a coach that would want the player profile changed and they (admn) wont do that. Today I watched a talented athletic big good looking SOFT football team lose to a less talented but mentally and physically tougher team. It may be coaching but I think it is more of the type of player Notre Dame can get. There are a few sell out hitters but on the whole this is a soft football team.

LOL you guys are aware that collegiate athletics accounting is a sham right? I would not be surprised one bit if Kelly has a football salary of 1.whatever million. I bet he is collecting 3+ million on camps and media fees or wherever else they feel like allocating that expense.

I refuse to believe we don't get physical kids. Many seem to do quite well in the NFL. This is something that comes up every time we have a shitty year. Along with asst. pay, S&C, athletic dorms, difficult classes, etc... The problem is coaching. We have a coach who runs a soft offense and has a soft culture. When it's 4th and inches and you have two future 1st round picks on the left side of your OL and a 250 lb. QB and you decide it's ok to throw a 20 yard horizontal pass behind the line of scrimmage, you're soft. When you throw the ball 30+ times in a fucking hurricane, you're soft.

Harbaugh would have this same group of kids undefeated and it wouldn't be close. Kelly needs to go to the BIG 12 and chuck it all over the field and play zero defense.
