I really think that Res Life came down to a choice: 2-5 games or 100+ hours of community service.

I really think that Floyd coming out with a mea culpa right away made his life easier with Res Life.

I hope Floyd keeps up with his classes, because he's going to be spending every night and weekend for four months working at the soup kitchen.

You really think we're turning into Bama and then you quote Cowherd?

First: As has been stated a thousand times, Reslife doesn't hand out suspensions, it can effectively terminate a student's season if it falls in that academic semester but that's it.

Second: Brian Kelly hasn't said **** yet.

Third: As much as I hate the idea of Michael's DUI, I for one can call it a young man's mistake. It's not robbery, assault, rape, gun related, etc etc. that Bama/Florida/Georgia et al. get away with constantly.

Fourth: I wouldn't mind a 1-3 game suspension, but see my first two points about that.

I'm also quite surprised but let's not forget that it is not draconian punishments that make ND special and different than most other programs like USC, Bama and Florida... these programs see the young men under their watch as athletes and couldn't care less if they get a degree or in serious trouble.

Incorrect. We all care about Floyd and had this been incident #1 you are allowed a mulligan. Its not. And saying that we harp on other schools "double secret probations" but then say its "OK" when its one of ours is lame. I fully expected him to be gone the bulk of the season, I am happy he is going to be there from game1. I still think he deserves atleast a game or 3.

I'll throw my meager thoughts into this whirlwind. At Notre Dame it is the role of ResLife to make a judgement about "time served" and "what is best for the student-in-trouble". They have done so. Their view is, apparently: Michael you're out of your extracurriculars for this semester and you'd better get to work fixing up your schoolwork and your problem. This seems like consistency of action to me and not special treatment.

Kelly's job is not to hand down special punishments over and above ResLife or civil authority unless things specifically related to team rules are involved --- he might interpret the DUI that way or maybe not. Any punishments that Kelly might choose to add on are therefore things that he decides are in the best interest of Michael Floyd and/or the team.

I am going to guess that Kelly has talked a lot about the "Notre Dame reputation" element of this with the president and athletic director and gotten a pretty good sense as to whether "public opinion" should play any role in what he does. And I'll bet that what he heard back was "pay no attention to that; do what's best for the student". Therefore, any further punishments handed down to Mike would come from meditating about what is actually good for him [a point-of-view that I'm not convinced that all our posters have].

If we really want to do what's best for Mike Floyd, then it must be something arrived at by persons who actually know Mike Floyd and where he's at right now. Is that "complete Wildman in need of a thorough spanking and shunning"? Or is that woefully sorry alcoholic [and angry drunk] in need of civil service penance and a lot of counseling and friendly teammate support? I don't know which way this will go, but I bet that the decision is made not about The Wrath of God nor the Reputation of Notre Dame, but about what can we best do for our brother.

I couldn't agree more. Let's not hurt someone with a punishment, rather attempt to help them. Personally, I believe Michael needs this team as much, if not more, than they need him.

I believe Kelly when he says that Mike is making great progress. I trust that Mike will recognize the magnitude of his actions and make the changes necessary to grow into a respectable and responsible man.

But in no way, shape or form do I think football game suspensions are anything other than "piling on." It's simply additional punitive actions for the sake of being punitive. Why? Is there a teaching moment? Hey, maybe there is, and if that's your opinion you're very much so entitled to have it. I personally feel that by the time the season rolls around in the fall Michael Floyd will have "paid his dues" far more than most people realize.

I would guess that what side of this subject we get behind is largely a reflection of whether or not we believe that playing football for the University of Notre Dame is a privelege.

Do we know for a fact that he is getting a mulligan? Punishments do not all have to be football related and we do not know what measures he has taken to address his situation.

So, basically, your straight out saying that ResLife doesn't care about Floyd and is really just consumed with the Football program's success. That they didn't have Floyd's best interest in mind (when no doubt they knew the heat they would take from letting him off lightly, as the outsiders will see it).
You are totally undermining the decision process that they went through and you are assuming that you know better than all of them. Of course, you were there at the hearing and heard what went on and Floyd's side of it as well right?

So what does everyone think Coach Kelly is going to do with Floyd? I say he keeps him out against south Florida but that he plays versus Michigan. Anything less makes him seem to lenient anything more seems to go against what he has said so far about teaching. Thoughts?

Mike seems like a really good guy. No doubt he will learn from this. I am glad he has a second chance at this. Of course, on a football standpoint, it makes our team much better.

I disagree. He has been absent through spring ball. It's unclear without official verification what other punishment has been handed down. At this point, I think the punishment is satisfactory without suspension during the season.

I'm sure Kelly knows full well he will have to answer to the media and everyone else for whatever he does, but will look past that silliness while making the best decision for Mike. Only they know all the facts.

Personally, I feel Floyd has already been doled his punishment with more to come. I would let him play the entire season.

This is fantastic news. Although Mike screwed up big time, I'm sure that the school has taken all the proper measures for their decision on punishment. They have alot more knowledge about the situation, so who the hell am I to say any different. Just glad to have him back. Go Irish!
