Gasoline shortages, price hikes coming to East Coast after pipeline leak - Sep. 16, 2016

by Charles Riley September 16, 2016: 11:30 AM ET

A section of the Colonial Pipeline, which runs from Houston to New York, has been closed since Sept. 9 after a spill of roughly 250,000 gallons was discovered in rural Shelby County, Ala.
The major pipeline, one pipe of which has been severed, provides gasoline for an estimated 50 million people on the East Coast each day, according to company estimates. The cause of the leak has yet to be determined, according to the company's most recent statement.
The pipeline's operator has said full service will not be restored until at least next week. The closure has set off an industry-wide scramble as suppliers seek alternative ways to transport gasoline to the East Coast.

...

The incident was about 5 miles from my house. Found out about it reading the internet news.

Prices in Indy are $1.85. Just saw the Speedway jacking the price to $2.35 a few minutes ago.

A friend of mine texted me about this yesterday morning. Then a friend here in town, who works for Delek, urged me to get gas last night ( I already got it at lunch yesterday).

I think the leak started Monday. It has been known for several days and I know some local news outlets were reporting it. Not sure why it took so long for national news outlets to finally start reporting it.

On the brighter side, it's not long term. Long enough for gas stations to stick it to the consumer for a bit though.

Yeah, you good? That's a lot of gallons.

I wasn't aware of the leak until I read an internet article about rising prices. No doubt it was on local news but I rarely watch it and I don't get a paper.

I'm at a higher elevation, maybe 100 feet, so the rivers flow down that way and if it reached the river it's well downstream from me. Colonial Pipeline has a tank farm about 2 miles from me with about a half dozen storage tanks. There are substantial leak protection berms around their property. If the leak was there it would have been contained in a small area but that also would be more a hazard, concentrated in a relatively small area.

The leak is about another 3 miles past the tank farm and further away from me. From looking at google maps the area near the leak is sparsely populated. I've not read if the leakage went subsurface or into any body of water, how far the leakage reached, nor how much has been collected.

Unaware of the situation, I filled up last night as we were below 1/4 tank. Cost $1.81 at a BP. Our Prius will be good of a week or two.

Just saw some local gas stations in NW Ohio go up about 20-30 cents.

Speedway must have a psychic, their prices out my way jumped 35 cents a couple of days ago.

BGIF, I hope you are okay. I understand that you are higher, and upstream from the leak, but I am sure the Alabama Bigfoot are not. I hope they don't head to higher ground to get away from the bad water.

Rates for regular range here from 1.78 to 2.09. The station where I filled up yesterday is still 1.81. The more expansive parts of town have the $2 prices but that's typical.

Here's a google map view of the spill area. The leakage is supposed to be in the dogleg retention pond on the right. If you look closely you can see the booms on the surface of the pond.

The media started talking the other day about a 10-15 cent rise in the Southeast due to this leak. I just knew then that they would use this to raise it everywhere, and more than 10-15 cents. Rat bastards they are....

Prices in central iowa have been 2.45 (2.15 for ethanol blend) for a while. Apparently we're a lot higher than some of you.

As an Environmental Engineer I've always had fuel efficient cars. BUT my former hippie, now conservative wife bought the Prius after doing a lot of investigation.

The bumpers stickers on the car are all hers.

Helena, Alabama Incident Update – September 17, 5:45 p.m., CDT Update #17

Posted on September 17, 2016 by sallymcdonald
SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. – Colonial Pipeline issued the following update this afternoon regarding its ongoing response to a product release in Shelby County, Alabama, and the interruption of service to Line 1, which transports gasoline from refiners on the Gulf Coast to delivery locations in the Southeast and along the Eastern seaboard.

Upon receiving approval from Unified Command, Colonial Pipeline has begun to execute its alternative plan to construct a bypass line around the leak site to allow Line 1 to return to service as rapidly and safely as possible. This plan has been reviewed by all appropriate federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

As this plan is implemented, the top priority of the unified response team remains the safety and protection of the public, responders, and the environment. Remediation efforts at the initial release site will also continue as conditions are deemed safe.

The EPA has also issued a second waiver to allow for reformulated and conventional gasoline to be sold in markets that may be impacted by the disruption in supply caused by the disruption in service to Colonial Pipeline Line 1. This waiver is effective immediately through October 6, 2016.

The Cahaba Wildlife Management Area between State Highway 270 and Copperhead Road will remain closed to all non-local residents and is expected to remain closed during this response effort. The Cahaba Wildlife Management Shooting Range and access to ATV trails in the area also remain closed.

This is how stupid terrorists are - does not take a lot to disrupt our infrastructure and some well placed destruction could really hamstring our country - without even killing anyone. If this thing were down for two weeks like folks were initially saying wtf would be going on?
