Ok someone just told me LSU is trying to remove all the "Confederate Jasmine" from their campus because of the name... idk, it sounds just stupid but so does 99 percent of this stuff to me, but I can't find anything on it... anyone hear anything about this?? Yes, I'm being sincere, someone at work just passed that along.

This was a business decision I assume. I don't recall anyone picketing them or Amazon, Wal-Mart, etc to stop selling it, they chose to do it as a business decision based on what they perceive to be market pressure?

It might be knee jerk for sure..... but lets recap... no matter what your romantic notions of watching this show are, its still a show with an all-white cast driving a race car tatted with arguably the most recognizable sign of human oppresion in history regardless if their hijinks are cheeky. And its fresh in everyone's mind so when they see that car on TVLand they are not romanticizing it anymore I would bet.

The issue is that people can't let others think and absorb for themselves. We know Dukes, Gone with the Wind, Tom and Jerry, etc. are from an era where they could get away with certain things that wouldn't be allowed today. The answer is not to ban/remove from TV these otherwise entertaining products. People simply have to take them for what they are. If someone isn't comfortable watching Bugs Bunny, they shouldn't watch it. Those of us who enjoy the show (while not supporting the racist undertones) should be allowed to watch at face value.

I have friends that do and say things I don't agree with. It doesn't mean I remove them from my life because there are a lot of things I like about them.

Do I like the racist undertones in Bugs Bunny? No. But I love all the other crap. So don't take away my ability to watch.

For Dukes, I don't recall any racial undertones. Yes the flag was there, but it was more a vehicle to add redneck/south legitimacy, not create a viewership of racists.

I would say that AitF was a thought provoking way of addressing the issues. groundbreaking IMO.

Maybe someone watched the episode where Dewey fakes having a terminal illness in a attempt to swindle the good people of Hazard and Boss Hog out of millions and were like..."yeah this show kind of sucks".

Not sure why people are trying to defend the clearly racists Looney Tunes episodes either. The portrayals of "Japs" in some of those were as racists as it gets. Why anyone would want their kid to watch crap like that is beyond me. If you fell the need you can easily access that stuff on you tube.

Liberalism is a religion. Viacom (parent company of TV Land) makes its money by marketing to a certain demographic. That demographic is becoming increasingly pious, so they're removing content that might offend those religious beliefs.

The point is that there are other aspects of the show that are valuable. Namely, that it's funny to little kids for reasons that are wholly non-racist. If the racist undertones don't manifest into some sort of actual racism, then why is it an issue? The only takeaway I ever got from Looney Tunes was that it was funny to watch animals fall off cliffs, get crushed by anvils, etc. I didn't even know who the Japanese were at 4 or 5 years old.

Obviously I wouldn't support NEW episodes of Looney Tunes to have any racist undertones because we live in a different world now. But the old episodes are classic for many good reasons and I think people should be able to watch them without having to search the Internet for boot leg copies.

Correct. The Jefferson's were originally the Bunkers neighbors. All in the Family was extremely controversial when it aired. There was a big effort to get it pulled. CBS knew it had a winner and refused to budge.

The sad part about this is about the government wanting change and not the people effected. The people effected I have seen were calm, very well spoken and prayed about the situation. The race war will be better when Obama is out of office and al is 6 on the other side.
