Not sure if it's been mentioned here and not going to comb through the thread before posting it, so my apologies if this is a double post. But, Elko's son is committed to play baseball at NW.

So, if we can make the money match or reasonably close. His son will be in Chicago, he'll get about the same money, coach at a place that he's familiar with, and get back to a more national brand that clearly helped Lea find a HC gig sooner than him with less experience. My hopes are not up ;)

There is NOTHING on the aTm boards about this. At least not the free ones...

How sure are we about this meeting?

I personally think it's all wishful thinking. We'll see.

Well, I don't see how it could be categorized as just wishful thinking. Again, Lou S said that his best source on coaching hires said this indeed has legs. Though, that doesn't make it a done deal.

If you know much about Lou, he does not do the Loy speculation game with anything regarding the program. He only reports things that he is told directly by those he trusts. Very conservative guy when it comes to this stuff.

It does conflict with the Marcus Freeman "full court press" that someone posted about.

Can't both be true? Why can't we go aggressively after two candidates and take the one that wants it. Maybe they view it as a 1a/1b situation. Just like recruiting.

Again I would not overthink the word meeting. It’s a Zoom call. Freeman is having a preliminary meeting also, it is a Zoom call. The word meeting is I think having people images of a jet touching down in South Bend and going through the athletic offices today.

Yep, no reason to not go after both aggressively. In fact I frankly think it would be unacceptable to not pursue both aggressively.

They could for sure both be true. I guess full court press just feels like a first choice kind of scenario where you wait until they say no before you move ahead. But in reality they are likely both just feeling out type meetings.

edit: no idea what I did there, doesn't look right does it.

Here's a question, if they both said yes who would you prefer?

My opinion is completely worthless lol but I'll go Elko. Both would be home runs.

Elko knows ND already and runs essentially the same scheme already in place, plus has existing relationships with several players and staff.

Really tough call. I think I would take Elko but either would be stellar hires and way better than anyone else out there.

I think I agree. He also has experience recruiting at the highest level.

Elko's defenses have performed at TAMU and he can recruit. If he wanted to come back to ND, it would be a great get. Again.

I'd go Elko. We knows he's recruited at this level. And the system remains the same. I don't want this to sound like I don't like Freeman but the system remaining the same seems like such a big deal I wouldn't have it as 1a and 1b. I'd have Elko is the clear front runner with Freeman as my #2.

This is my thinking. If both even want to come here, Elko is the clear choice.

My worry is we don’t get either...then where do we go?

Freeman and Fickell are pretty damned tight. I'm having a hard time seeing Freeman leave Fickell as it is obvious Fickell's getting a P5 HC job whenever he wants one.

Doubt if Elko's relationship with Jimbo is anywhere's close to that. Jimbo seems like a complete shithead, but maybe I'm biased.

Really think Freeman ain't happening, Elko is a maybe.

Exactly my line of thinking... And I've been saying the same thing about Fick and Freeman for a month.

I would not put my money on Freeman coming to ND.

I really like Fickell. I think he'd recruit well wherever he goes and win games. Seems like a standup guy who hopefully doesn't have baggage and skeletons. I don't know if one day when Ryan Day is gone Ohio State would give him a chance. He held down the fort for a year after Tressel got bagged and they had the opportunity to get Meyer. I commended him at the time for being the HC that year. I'm sure Columbus would be a destination point for him.

I still like Bateman from UNC but if Elko can sort itself out and he comes back that would be excellent.

Despite all this I could see Freeman leaving if he really wants to be a HC and thinks Fickell is likely to stay at Cincinnati for the foreseeable future. It's much harder to take that next step as a DC at a G5 school.

I wonder if Fickle will end up at Florida. Mullen said we would be interested in the NFL. Fickle would have maybe another good year under his belt. If he could hold on to Freeman and get some players.

I could also see him at Penn State

Dan Mullen in the NFL?

Yes, please. Talk about a slow moving car crash.

You are the only one that is reporting it as a zoom call. Where did you see this?

Loy reported Freeman’s initial is a set of Zoom calls. Also we live in a pandemic? Saying it’s a Zoom call my main point was we should just assume that’s what a meeting is at this point. HC interviews across the country have been Zoom calls.

There was an article with I think a quote from Kelly saying the initial interviews would be over zoom, but the final ones would be in person. So the distinction does matter.
