So what next for this team? For this program?

I think we are unlikely to get into the playoff again. Really. This was more than a bad day. This was validation that we do not belong in the conversation with the big boys.

The administration must make a choice. They’ve sat on the fence for 20 years and have been allowed to get away with it. It can’t continue.

I'd take 10-3 or 11-2 over this shitshow any year. We should have just lost to Pitt and taken our chances against UCF. We probably could have scored a touchdown against them.

So, to your point..... You’re saying a season like last year is preferable to this year? That’s ridiculous. We were embarrassed worse by a much weaker team (Miami) and fell apart against Stanford. There’s no way that should be looked at as more successful than this year. I can’t believe how knee-jerk everybody is about this season. Yes, we crapped ourselves (again). We have some talent and hopefully can build off of this season. We are closer than a lot of teams and any team would love to have made the playoffs and have a chance to compete.

This team over-achieved all year. You can ask any irish fan if they thought we would go 12-0 and nobody would have said yes. We are very close IMO to being elite, but I am so proud of this team for the great season that they had.

Go Irish

Sorry but we are no where close to elite.

I am starting to see a lot of the comments on ESPN facebook page saying that this was a test for ND so if they go 12-0 again, the committee will think twice before picking them again for the CFP.

i made the same comment a while back.
this game was a lot different (story line) than 2012, but the outcome was similar.

what do they say? fool me once, shame on me. fool me twice...

we won't be relegated to UCF land, but we did lose cred, again..

the third down calls alone puts Long's job in jeopardy.

It's almost calls into question....is he getting paid off by the Mob or something? I mean, decisions he made need to be called into question on that level. Who the fuck was paying him to sabotage?

If your definition of elite is Clemson/Bama, then probably not. Still better than most teams. Beat some good teams this year and went 12-1. I’ll take that as a good year. Obviously wish it would’ve been competitive today, but we weren’t ready.

Anyone that thinks ND is elite is hammered drunk off of the Irish-koolaid. Never will be elite when your best recruits are 4-star guys that are in the mid 40s and 50s nationally. We simply can't land game-changing guys that the upper-echelon programs are practically starting across the board. Let's face it, not many of those guys are academically fit to attend a university that has such rigorous standards. Until there's some leniency in terms of academic requirements, we're gonna have a hard time ever keeping pace with the various semi-pro factories.

Can’t win without a QB. Book had many chances and played scared and was very inaccurate. He had Boykin at least twice with leverage and threw both deep and short. He hits some of those throws, especially early, and who know.

Notre Dame can land them, though. Brian Kelly cannot.

When you go into a game leveraged, having to play near-flawless football, and needing almost every break to go your way, then you're outclassed. Would Bama or Clemson ever go into a game needing these variables? No, they wouldn't. I'm not sure the "great programs", the ones under the upper-echelon guys, get bounced like ND did today. I'm not sure if it's coaching, recruiting, academic standards, or some blend of the 3, but as things currently stand ND is a ways away from competing on that stage.

ND can land very few, only the guys that can actually hang academically. We most certainly can't pick and choose like Bama or Clemson. It's such a refined amount that are eligible that ND starts from a leveraged position; one that honestly keeps us from seriously competing on stages like today.

LOL@ at the punks on here who feel the need to neg rep people for voicing their opinions on here. Yeah my opinions were "negative" but guess what, the game was a shitshow. Yeah Andy in Sactown I'm talking to you. I don't think I've ever neg repped someone on here other than maybe an obvious troll or maybe someone in a political thread one time or something. What an assclown.

I'm saying, of all the players that *can* hang academically, we do not land a high enough percentage of the elite of that group.

Idk. Both in 2012 and this year, we had close calls against bad teams. We didn't look like an elite team. This year, our defense looked legit, and I think it was. The majority of our struggles today came with Donte fucking Vaughn on the field. However, our offense really hasn't looked good all year. Dex was great, but the OL sucked, WRs weren't anything special, and Book was just good enough to win behind the defense.

Most years, our schedule will look tougher than it did this year. If we go undefeated with a legit top schedule. I think we'll get in again. 1 loss will never cut it. Also, we need to start passing the eye test. Last year, I think we passed the eye test until Miami. We kicked the crap out of USC and NC St, kept it to 1 point vs UGA, and put away our lesser opponents. Then it unraveled. This year, we struggled against a bevy of lesser opponents.

If we can keep Lea, coupled with our defensive recruiting, I think we're gonna have a championship level defense for the years to come. We gotta figure out some shit on offense. Recruiting has been sub-par (especially RB), playcalling has been hot and cold. Fingers crossed 5 star Phil is the truth.

So, I think we can make the playoffs again. But we have to earn it. Most years, if we go undefeated against our schedule, it will be enough. The people who were saying we weren't good enough this year, were right. They're not biased ND haters. They are informed CFB fans. If we are legitimately good enough to make the playoffs again, they won't leave us out. But we have a ways to go to be legitimately good enough.

I’m driving to Sactown to kick some ass! This is uncalled for! Will take a few days and I might lose some motivation but I’m still going!
