I think that they turned away Schutt shows their priorities, and what they think about the need for a true 3-4 NT.

You have to remember, even Nix wasn't originally a Kelly recruit, and while he's a great player, we have no way of knowing if Kelly would've pursued him, had Kelly been the coach when his recruitment started.

I've got to nit pick this, sorry. ND has many guys capable of playing DT. Louis Nix is the only true NG... and even that's debatable when you consider Springmann is 300+ lbs.

I've read in a lot of places that ND coaches don't really see the need for a true 3-4 NG. As such, Kona, Jones, Tuitt, etc. are all more than capable of playing the "DT" position.

No matter what way you slice it, ND is simply not recruiting a NG or DT as a priority in this class. So if you trust the coaches... which I'm not saying you necessarily need to do... but assuming you do there's not really a reason to worry over the recruiting of that position. ND is absolutely targeting another DEish kind of guy and we'll get at least one more before all is said and done.

Yep, this must be right. I said above that a true DT is an "overlooked need" in this class, but that can't be quite accurate; of course I believe that Kelly and Diaco know what they are doing. Personally I don't get why we don't need another Nix-like guy. Look at the Steelers, who are a model of success in a system like ours. They have used some Aaron Smith-type guys at DE (Hooper reminds me of him) but they also use guys like Casey Hampton, true NG types. So I would love for us to get another guy like that in this class.

But I don't mean that as a challenge to the coaches. This just comes from a place of curiosity. It seems to me we need another Lou Nix type, but I guess they figure JJ, Springmann and Day fit the bill going forward. I guess I get that. Springmann may surprise us this year. I'll be interested to see what they do next year.

ND (at least based on the last two years) doesn't play a "true", pure, all-the-time 3-4, either. Nor are they in the NFL, facing guys of that size every week.

Guys, I have an idea. It seems to me like we just started this season with this incredibly daunting schedule and tons of unproven positions on this team, but we aren't worrying enough...let's talk about depth 3 years from now.

this is a forum, we can talk about depth three years from now AND the daunting schedule this year. That is why there are DIFFERENT threads for DIFFERENT topics. I am sorry, but this line does nothing... If you want to limit yourself to ONLY the threads that talk about the daunting schedule, then more power to ya.

I don't think Beau was saying to not discuss depth at the position.

I think he was implying that it's a little absurd to be too worried about it right now.

This is the only topic that Whiskey and I ever disagree on, and his solution is mentally healthier than mine. BUT.... you stockpile defensive tackles wherever you can find them. You do not just "roll them dice" and hope that some guy you have will be serviceable with a lot of makeover change.

People have said that the staff isn't worried. I'd be very interested to know how we know that they aren't, or rather it is a situation that few ND-quality DTs are available this cycle, we gave them a shot, and got turned down.

At the very least, no one could convince me that if a version of Louis Nix wanted to come to ND in this cycle the staff would say: hmmmm.... let us think about that for a moment.
