Catching up with...Former Notre Dame halfback Darius Walker
As part of our story "Lost in Transition at Notre Dame," which ran Friday, we spent time chatting with former Notre Dame halfback and current NFL rookie Darius Walker.
Walker left the Irish after last season to declare for the NFL Draft. He is currently in camp with the Houston Texans, fighting for a roster spot.
Here are some snippets of our conversation with Walker last week:
Insights: What goes through your mind when you see guys leave?
DW: "It was just crazy, especially coming in with those guys you had a lot of friendships that you naturally built, especially when you are coming in doing the same thing, we're all freshmen, all experienceing the same things with being homesick. Then, when guys leave, you are like 'Wow, it's an empty spot there.' You hope that 'Man, I'm not the next guy to go.' Really."
Insights: Did that make you think about coming back? Being such a small group?
DW: "Nah, nah. Not at all. As far as the team, that's the great thing about college football, that it is a team effort. Guys who are in your class, there are underclassmen and cats older than you so you build a camaraderie and you can form bonds with people who aren't the same age."
Insights: What have the past few weeks been like?
DW: "It's been rough, man. Training camp is not good at any level. It don't matter if you are in pee-wee football or any level. Training camp is not good. It's been two-a-days, it's very hot in Houston and you are working with guys and sweating and hitting, all of that. This is a rough time but it is supposed to be like that."
Insights: Was it difficult for you when you were cut and then re-signed?
DW: "Yeah, a day or two later, yeah. The thing, from my point of view was, when I was released, it was before training camp so we hadn't done anything yet. There were no pads that had gone on, there was no hitting, notbody was running plays, anything like that. It was shocking to me to be let go before I had the opportunity to do anything."
Insights: So what went through your mind in those 24, 48 hours?
DW: "You just never know. I understood that being in the NFL, it is a business so you never know where you are going to end up sometimes. There are guys who play with one team and five games into the season are traded to another team. You never really have any idea of how things are actually going to go. When I was home, I was like 'OK, we'll see where God leads me to next or what happens for me next.' You never know. I just tried to stay positive and thankful that I got a call back from the same team, talking about coming right back up."
Insights: Looking back, do you feel like you made the right move?
DW: "Definitely. I definitely think it was the right move for me at the time, especially with everything that was going on and it was definitely the right decision for me. We'll just have to see now where it leads me."
Insights: Do you think you leaving was the right decision? What were the reasons?
DW: "It was everything. It was not only time for me to go but playing in college and my college football years, that I definitely fulfilled everything I needed to as far as college football was concerned. The opportunity was definitely there for me to go into the NFL and to be with an organization and play with the team. The thing to me is how do you pass up the opportunity to play NFL ball?"
Insights: What was it like after draft day?
DW: "That's life. You make decisions and kind of have to live with them. There are ups-and-downs to everything. I was talking with guys here who have been in the leagues and there are a lot of ups-and-downs you go through, especially with football and with anything that you do. That's what I took it as, that's life and I have to try and bounce back and see what happens next."
Insights: What happened with the Bears that got you in Houston?
DW: "I'm not real sure how the whole Bears signing thing came out. I was in close negotiations with about six teams at the time of the free agency contract. When it came out that I had already signed with the Bears I was shocked as well because that was something that hadn't happened. It was in close contact with them as well as other teams. I don't know how rumor got out or word got out that I signed with Chicago."
Insights: Do you miss being at college?
DW: "Of course, man. ND? Notre Dame. I'll miss that forever."
Insights: Do you regret not going back?
DW: "Not really. As far as that is concerned, nah. As far as Notre Dame goes, that's my place and that's going to be a part of me my whole life. As far as football is concerned, I'm getting enough right now."
