Cream bassist Jack Bruce dies

(CNN) -- Jack Bruce, singer, songwriter and bassist for legendary 1960s rock band Cream, died Saturday at 71.

Bruce's family confirmed the death of the Scottish musician on his official website and Facebook page.

"The world of music will be a poorer place without him, but he lives on in his music and forever in our hearts."

Considered one of the greatest rock trios of all time, Cream was formed by Bruce, guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker in 1966. The band produced such hits as "Sunshine of Your Love," "White Room," "Crossroads" and "Strange Brew," many of which Bruce wrote and sang. He also helped come up with the memorable guitar riff in "Sunshine of Your Love."

I suppose the sorrow I feel is as much for lost youth and that wonderful time. But Jack was in the middle of so much of the great music of the era! From John Mayall's Blues Breakers and his early association with Ginger Baker, to his really good stuff with Cream, which was; and was as smooth as. He will be missed. But his music will be long celebrated!

I read Clapton's book and one thing that stood out is EC claimed to have made very little money off Cream, but made tons off Blind Faith, now talk about a group not together very long... Anyway, I was just thinking how old these guys are all getting over the weekend, and then this. Thanks for the great many hours of music Jack.

Bruce would try to dominate with the bass line, and Baker would counter with his own sense of time. And the beat goes on!

For sure.

Always sounded like four or five people were playing. Bruce influenced a lot of the well known bass players.

With the bad heart, always thought Ginger Baker would go first.

So upsetting. I found Clapton at a young age, my dad was always a huge fan. I was instantly mesmerized by how he was able to make that guitar sing. As I grew older. though I am still relatively young at 25, I began to really listen to the bass, and it just floored me. What Jack Bruce could do with the bass and was just unreal. Like others have said it doesn't sound like a trio, but then again they basically created the power trio.

I always wanted to see them in concert together, but never will get that chance. RIP Jack

The name of the documentary film is Beware of Mr. Baker - the title is from a sign at the entrance to a horse farm in South Africa. Ginger Baker's work has influenced many rock drummers, and yet, Baker's influences - Phil Seamen, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Elvin Jones - are all Jazz musicians.

Bruce, Baker and Clapton were a delicious melding of musicians with varied backgrounds in music. The unifying factor was their ability to improvise well with others. And kick it up a few notches. Bruce and Baker teased each other with bass lines but neither over powered or out muscled the other. Clapton jumped in with bass runs of his own and complemented the hi-hat and snare.

All in all, a good bunch of blokes.

Yes November '68. I was about 15 and saw all the greats over the next few years in London. Hendrix, Dylan, Stones, Marley at their height.
