Fears of US drug shortages grow as India locks down to curb the coronavirus (CNBC)

India has also said that exports of hydroxychloroquine will be limited to fulfilling existing contracts, while certain shipments on humanitarian grounds may also be allowed on a case-by-case basis.

We can't even order inhalers, right now. Oxygen could also be an issue, because we don't know exactly how many oxygen tanks will be needed for the patients well enough to discharge to home. Forget about antibiotics, the primary drugs were unavailable a month ago. This will be like taking a trip back in time.

So Who's Shielding Your Incompetence From The General Public.

So Who's Shielding Your Incompetence From The General Public.

I'd like to see a healthcare poll. His incompetence is shielded from the general public because they don't understand exactly how fucked up this whole situation is. Even most people in healthcare were not fully aware of how sunk we were, until the Italy videos started to hit and their PPE started to run out.

You strung the sentences together. I just highlighted the irony. A politician is supposed to have all the answers when the professionals weren't prepared.

Yes, I'd like to see a healthcare poll on the incompetence of hospital administrators, Hospital Boards of Trustees, State Hospital Governing Boards, AMA, EMAs, etc, etc, who didn't prepare for an emergency.

I'm not talking 2015 although that is fair game for why hospitals aren't prepared from coast to coast. Why State EMA's weren't prepared when the reports first came out of China and thousands of Chinese got on planes and left the country? Why was it a shock when cruise ships had so many sick but weren't quarantined and isolated? Hello, Seattle!

Why the Governor of NY was quick to tell POTUS AND the Mayor of NYC. "Don't tell me what to do, I'm in charge." The GOVERNORS are the only one with the authority in our republic. Why were hospitals in all 50 States so under prepared. In 1918 they didn't have the 24/7 news, TV, internet, cell phones, fax machines. They had a reason to be unprepared. No so today.

Instead of lamenting lack of PPE today (I have neighbors sewing masks at home to fill local needs) why weren't administrators on the phone to 3M, et al, in December ordering PPEs for their people instead of waiting until March?

So let's all point the finger at POTUS (of any party) for why the medical facilities from 50 sovereign states were so woefully unprepared and despite Wuhan's problem in December waited until March for the Federal Government to bail out those 50 States medical facilities AND their industries.

By way of disclosure, my extended family includes 12 MDs, 2 PAs, 6 RNs, including 2 Hospital Nursing Administrators, 2 Pharm.D, 2 PT.D, and a pharmaceutical rep. It was a topic around our dinner tables and in communications (they're located in 7 states) but they expressed real concern that the higher ups mantra was uniform, there's no funds budgeted to start preparing now.

I enjoy the posts you and are member MDs put up here enlightening many. But keep in mind this thread was supposed to be for the medical side, how are we doing, how people are coping, etc. There is a POLITICAL Thread for grinding your axe. Put it there.

Best wishes to you, your family, and your staff. Be safe.

Asymptomatic carriers of coronavirus ???

Asymptomatic carriers of coronavirus ???

MARCH 25, 2020 / 1:29 AM / UPDATED 2 HOURS AGO
Explainer: China's symptom-free coronavirus carriers raise fears of new wave of infections
David Stanway

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - The existence of a substantial but unknown number of asymptomatic carriers of coronavirus in China has raised concerns among the public that people could still be spreading COVID-19 without knowing they are sick.

As the virus continues to wreak havoc across the world, China is close to declaring victory and is already easing travel restrictions. The border of Hubei province, epicenter of the virus, opened on Wednesday after a two-month shutdown.

But there are concerns that the end of the lockdown will release thousands of infectious people back into circulation.

Asymptomatic cases present a huge challenge in the control of infectious disease, making it harder to detect and stop transmission.

In China, the number of known asymptomatic cases is classified, and it is not included in the official data, though the South China Morning Post, citing unpublished official documents, recently said it was more than 40,000.

China had reported 81,218 coronavirus cases, and 3,281 deaths by the end of Tuesday.

Asymptomatic cases are currently found through “contact tracing”. China identifies people exposed to someone with a confirmed diagnosis, and if they test positive, they are quarantined whether or not they manifest symptoms.

“Asymptomatic patients have all been discovered during our contact tracing,” said Wu Zunyou of the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention at a briefing on Tuesday. “So will they be able to create transmission? They won’t.”

Still, the failure to include them in the official data has raised concerns about Beijing’s commitment to transparency, and some experts say it could also create a misleading picture about how the epidemic spreads and whether or not it is under control.

Despite recording zero new infections from March 18 to March 22, the COVID-19 hotspot city of Wuhan disclosed on March 20 that one newly diagnosed case was not included in the official data because the patient, a 62-year old man surnamed Zhang had shown no symptoms.

Citing hospital sources, the news magazine Caixin also reported that a new case in Wuhan on Tuesday was a doctor who had been infected by an asymptomatic patient.

China says asymptomatic patients will be added to the list of confirmed patients if they show symptoms at a later stage. But it remains unclear how many asymptomatic cases remain undiagnosed and therefore unquarantined.

Some experts warn that undetected, asymptomatic patients could create fresh transmission routes once lockdowns are eased.

It is especially concerning given that many countries have yet to implement sufficient levels of widespread community testing,” said Adam Kamradt-Scott, a public health specialist at the University of Sydney.

It is also unclear how much they might infect others.

“We know that that is possible, but we do not believe that that’s a major driver of transmission,” said Maria Van Kerkhove of the World Health Organization at a briefing early in March.

New studies show that asymptomatic carriers could pose risks. One analysis of the Diamond Princess cruise ship outbreak showed that 33 of the 104 infected passengers remained asymptomatic even after an average of 10 days of observation at the Self-Defense Forces Central Hospital in Japan.

While many appeared healthy throughout, a few other initially asymptomatic passengers quickly became seriously ill.

Another study published on March 23, looking at cases in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing, said 18% of patients were asymptomatic. Another even found that people are more likely to transmit the disease when symptoms are at their mildest.

The Yale School of Public Health said the existence of presymptomatic (asymptomatic) patients meant that screening procedures at airports and other points of entry were insufficient to prevent the coronavirus passing from China to other countries.

“The real picture will only come to light when we have a serological test to find out who has been infected,” said Ian Henderson, Director of the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at Queensland University.

My wife has been fighting something with the same symptoms for close to two weeks. She already got her flu and pneumonia shots and has been riding it out hoping it would clear up. Given she's 65, asthmatic and has HBP, we're going to see if she can get tested today.

That sucks. Never easy to do. Hope we don’t get to where I have to do the same thing.

Never fun but I've laid off/fired tens of thousands of people with the nature of my business....it'll be just like any other day in our world unfortunately. Her job tasks though will now fall onto my plate which in turn I'll delegate on to another team member, so they'll be a bit of a trickle down effect. And, one less Christy for me to keep track of (inside joke for the Louisville crowd).

The irony of it all is she arrived today complaining about how the company is not allowing her to work from home. Her tune might be a little different if she only knew what was coming this Friday.

Good luck! The asthma part is a little worrisome. See if you can sneak a few inhalers through your insurance. They're about to lock down today on quantity limits for the next 60 days.

Right, but I am speaking to events outside the IMF.

Countries worldwide owed more than 6% of world GDP in debt to China. The bulk of this happens outside the IMF or other traditional mechanisms. Dozens of countries in Africa and CIS owe over 20% of their own country GDP to China. This doesn't even factor in swaps. At some point, most likely in the not too distant future, there will be a significant liquidity crisis, outside of the IMF's views.

There are numerous different ways "to make China pay". In the end, they will end up paying one way or another. But that fact alone will have significant consequences worldwide.

I get it, I'm just not really sure what the different ways are, and the likelihood of it happening. Some of the bigger deals I've seen are very well covered in the case of defaults.

Just saw that at least 60% of all the cases in the US stem from travel from New York...

And... Prince Charles is now positive.

And... All of India is now under strict lockdown.

The mighty Brass Flamingo is not immune to COVID-19, unfortunately. Apparently T&A are non-essential...

Hopefully Christy can keep working her side gig at the Brass Flamingo!

I have to imagine PPE detracts a lot from the motorboat...

Haven't thought of BF in decades. I remember hitting that joint with my fake ID back in the day after playing some pool close by.

I did hardcore drugs once,... it’s true,... I once took an extra strength Aspirin the same day I took Claritin. #stayhard

I just hope it wasn't night time extra strength, and if so, you really trusted your boyfriend.

The only thing worse than COVID-19 financially impacting the BF is if 2155 stops visiting. lol

I called to get the test scheduled and they tell me the info published was incorrect and the 5,000 available test kits are actually in Muncie. I called our doctor and have been waiting for a call back. Need to call them back.

I appreciate everyone's well wishes. Neither of us are in panic mode, but I think it's time to be safe rather than sorry.

Heard from several people around Fort Wayne that they are being told they probably have Coronavirus, but will not be tested because they aren't sick enough to require hospitalization.

Allen County has 7 "documented" cases.

The university I work at just confirmed multiple employee cases,... fun. I’m still feeling under the weather but still haven’t spiked a fever so who knows what I have. I saw a breakdown last night that nearly everyone runs a fever within a week. I’ve had whatever this is about that long now... so...

I watched Eli Manning beat Tom Brady in the Super Bowl at PT's. Good times indeed.

They interviewed a women on one of the MSM yesterday or the day before that said she had almost zero symptoms. I'm not convinced yet that any significant symptoms present themselves in the younger/healthy demographics. You're pretty healthy in terms of lifestyle, age, etc., right? Talking physically, not mentally...

80+% of the folks that are tested, come back negative, so have to assume they are simply prioritizing right now. My 2nd cousin who is a nurse said they are being hammered by no-symptom and very mild symptom requests for testing from mostly non-at-risk demographics. She said the availability of test kits will be plentiful very soon (or so she is told), and the real issue they will likely have is man power to administer.

Ruthie's, I believe, shut down in the late 80s to mid 90s. It was a hole in the wall fo-sho...
In the pre-21 fake ID days, or no ID days, we even went to a few completely redneck joints over off South East Street. Talk about hillbilly...

We did some football watching at the RG. Actually had a few buddies that were Colts players that would meet there post game. Some wild stuff went on there after the doors were locked lol..
