There’s definitely a difference, but he clearly has the leg to absolutely hammer the ball, and it looks like he’s finally figured out how to strike/place a football. The staff has to be desperate, so my guess is he’s gotten a look in practice and he's having issues with timing. He struggled with timing on punts last year, and with field goals the margin for error is zero.

It's mind boggling to me that people think someone who has probably had virtually no experience kicking a football can just pick it up because hey... he's got a strong leg.

A soccer player with no experience kicking a football would likely have a better chance of kicking a football than a guy who has likely only punted the football.

I think a good rugby goal kicker would have potential but aussie rules (which is a totally different sport to rugby or anything anyone has ever seen) not a chance. Aussie rules players miss kicks from in front all the time.

That sounds like faint praise. He's been fantastic. Oddly, he's been ineligible for ranking (at cfbstats, at least) the last two years because he doesn't punt enough. 3.6 punts/game is a ridiculously high minimum.

It shouldn’t be mind-boggling at all. He’s got a big leg, he’s shown it in multiple sports, and he’s a good athlete. It’s entirely reasonable to think he could both punt and kick a football. The mechanics aren’t identical, but they’re not from different planets either.

He has experience kicking FGs, he just doesn’t have in-game experience doing it. I get that’s a meaningful distinction. I’m not suggesting Rendell is going to walk in and start drilling 50-yard game-winners just because he has a big leg. But it’s not unreasonable to think he can comfortably make extra points, adn that’s something we currently cannot do.

If Biagi took a minute to really assess thie situation he’d slap a pair of square nose cowboy boots on Randell (he’s Australian they wear such things based on my forced viewing of Faraway Downs), have him take three steps back and then come at it straight on ala Tom Dempsey.
