Now I may be jumping the gun here, but does anyone else see any comparisons to this year's ND team to that of the 09 Bama title team? When I say comparisons, I mean more on the defensive side of the ball. The front 7 of that team was killer, with Terrance Cody, Marcell Dareus, McClain, Hightower and Upshaw to name a few. Our running game is good, but nothing close to what Richardson and Ingram (Heisman) were (IMO). Hard to compare to Julio Jones, but we have Eifert. TJ is turning into something special too, should have a breakout senior season next year. At QB, McElroy wasn't "spectacular" but did the necessary to get the W. Just sharing my thoughts. What do you all think?

Our d-line is much better. Bama's linebackers and DBs were better overall, but we have MANTI.

No. Just no.

09 Alabama is superior literally at every position group than we are, with the exception of TE. Look at where their defense went in the draft.

They were 7-0 at one point. We are 7-0 now. That's about it on comparisons but that's enough for me.. especially if it continues.

They also started unranked, right?

No, preseason #5 in both AP and Coaches.

McElroy was a 21 year old with two seasons as the #2 QB following a redshirt season. He was 6-2, 220. Despite repeated attempts to compare McElroy and Golson there is no similarity except they both sat out there freshman year.

That also is about the closest similarity between the '09 Tide and ND.

Close the thread.

That team would throttle us, crop of NFL 1st rounders and a heisman trophy winning running back (with Trent Richardson behind him)

Interesting topic but perhaps we're more similar to Alabama's 2008 team. That team was young and it was Alabama's first year really being back in national prominence. They ran the table that year but ended up losing to a more veteran and more talented Florida team in the SEC title game. If we lose to Oklahoma or USC that would be akin to losing to Florida. Maybe this year we aren't true NC threats (though if we beat OU we certainly are) but this year could be our launching pad.

If you look at Alabama the year before that, Saban's first year at Alabama, they went 7-6 and started unranked at the beginning of the next year. So (other than this being CBK's third year) the parallels are there between us and Alabama. Now let's just hope the next 4 years shake out the way they have for the Tide.

Their D line had so much depth...Dareus wasn't even a starter..

And they had a ridiculous secondary: Arenas, Jackson, Barron, Kirkpatrick.....

That defense was stacked with 1st round picks. Right now it looks like we have 3 sure-fire barring injury and some mid-round picks.

Parallels? When will ND sign 30+ recruits several years in a row to achieve the comparable talent and depth? When will ND start scheduling FCS schools and directional schools like Bama does to pad the schedule? How about the JUCO's? And dropping the student off the student athlete. Then there might be some parallels.

I was talking about in terms of progression, how far we've come, and where we could potentially go.

And our D line doesn't?

Bobby Greenwood (UFA), Terrence Cody (2nd round), Brandon Deaderick (7th round due to injury) were their starters, and Lorenzo Washington (UFA) rotated in. Dareus was a freshman who hardly played at that time.

Its all just projection up to this point, but I would take KLM (prob 4-5th round), Nix (1st?), and Tuitt (1st?) over their starters easily. We have Day, Kona, and Springman all rotating in as well this year. Then there is Jones and Hounshell ready to go next year. Our D line depth is outstanding right now. We need to keep it stocked, but it is the strength of our team this year and quite possibly, the best in the nation.

I would not take our guys over that lineup...in any universe. I don't care where they're drafted. I'm just looking at THAT season. It's not even close. That may be, talent wise, the best D unit ever assembled.

I'm not saying I'm not happy with our guys...but Nix over Cody?? LOL...not a chance

If I had to choose a team to compare this team to, in terms of National Championship, I'd go with the 2002 Ohio State team. I think the teams were similar in terms of talent. They played a lot of close games. We have played a lot of close games. They just didn't have as tough as a road schedule as we did. Plus we will be playing a team that would be 14 point favorites at least over us in Alabama. Lots of similarities imo.
