I’ve worked for 20 years in a field very similar to college football coaching. Usually the decision is a mix of:

Opportunity
Compensation
Personal Interest in the location
Family Interest in the location
Career Risk

I think that will change with time. Les Miles, Larry Coker, Ed Orgeron, Jimbo Fisher aren’t legends in my eyes. I get what you’re saying but we come from a generation where ND, Bama, OSU, USC, scUM, UT, OU, Nebraska were legend making programs. Today’s fanbase couldn’t care less IMO

Now when you put a young, successful HC like MF w/ a historic school like ND that hasn’t won since before kids today were born? No doubt that would be legendary. But legends like Urban Meyer & Bob Stoops have passed up challenges like ND in favor of the Al Davis mantra of “Just Win Baby”.
It's still easier to just win, baby at the biggest programs thus those jobs are attractive. Kiffin has been at OM for 6 seasons now with 4 10+ win seasons and another 9 win season iirc, and OM's overall talent composition isn't even top 20 and lags well behind UF who hasn't won shit since Obama's first term. The Blue Bloods and other bigger brands have more money, more resources, better facilities, established recruiting pipelines, etc.

I'm also skeptical that just throwing some money at SMU and TT is going to suddenly make those jobs perennial winners.

ND being the exception. If not, legends like Urban Meyer & Bob Stoops would’ve accepted the challenge. They wanted the easier route. I just think some, not all; mid-tier teams will also provide an easier route. UF isn’t a blueblood & wasn’t shit until the Visor went there. Even then, it took him getting Bob Stoops to be his DC.

I could see SMU eventually getting there just b/c of Dallas & they were able to rise from an also-ran in the early 80s before getting the death penalty. Like all programs…it’s all about the HC when turning a program around. Saban did it at LSU while Miles & Orgeron road his coattails & did just enough not to fuck it up.

SMU was a decent program for most of its 100 or so years of existence and really good in the early 80’s before they got the death penalty. Lot of money and resources as well.

I would say there's certainly a breakeven point between the excess value an ND degree provides vs. BumU.

An actuary can whip something up but the life times earnings gain from an ND degree probably isn't more than like ~500k over that of a lesser generic school? Maybe?

So if you can get that surplus value in NIL, doesn't really make financial sense to actually play school.
Depends. I’m not talking about just the degree but going to an institution that actually educates you which in turn provides you with access to opportunities beyond football.

I would imagine Tyler Buchner for example ends up out earning say Duece Knight by a significant amount at the end of the day. Now, I’m not saying money equates to happiness but it is always nice to have more options and opportunities.

Most NFL players end up going broke. Would probably imagine that’s the way it’s gonna shake out for many of these kids getting NIL who “aren’t playing school”.

As a parent if my kid could go play ball at ND or Stanford vs say Auburn and make relatively the same NIL I’m pushing them to and or advocating very hard for the former 100 times out of 100. I think many former players understand this and might be a reason ND has had a lot of success landing the kids of former pros.

True. It’s extended to the modern college fanbase. A large portion are still in the BCS mindset. They don’t understand that a playoff is just that..a playoff. And since the latter part of the BCS era was dominated by the SEC, they think that’s the way it’s always been and there’s no reason it should change. Now there’s parity w/ NIL. Soon there will be one or two mega conferences. The G5 won’t be part of the CFP. And FCS opponents will no longer be allowed.

As imperfect as it is, compare today’s format vs what we grew up with. You had an AP & Coach’s (UPI) poll voting on who the NC would be. We all know there’s no way these AP voters could truly evaluate all the viable teams in a fair & unbiased fashion. They were mostly regional reporters. Even worse, it was anonymous w/ rare exception. These fat desk jockeys who probably didn’t even play didn’t have the balls to make their vote public.
Don’t disagree, but those fat desk jockeys gave us a Natty in ‘77 when they voted us from #5 to #1.

We're not that crazy. Nobody really expected anyone to come in and keep the program at Saban level. We're just frustrated at the stupid losses. You're prepared, you play hard, you get beaten by another good team, fine. It happens. Just showing up looking absolutely lost & unprepared, and laying an egg like we have in losses to OU, Vandy, FSU, etc. is what's driving us nuts. We look like the best team in the country one week, and hot garbage the next. It's better this year than last, and I hope he continues to improve, but I'm afraid he's going to be a perpetual 10-2 kind of coach.
Bishop You just made my point.

No way has he earned a pay day like that.
Seriously. How many times have we seen some school give a huge raise to keep a coach that nobody was really trying to hire away? This guy's a good coach, but who did they keep him away from that would've paid him that sort of money? This is how you end up owing a mediocre coach the annual GDP of a medium sized European country in a couple of years like Auburn or A&M or LSU have.

True but it helped that ND smoked Texas & Earl Campbell while Lou Holtz & the Hogs upset #1 OU. Holtz should’ve gotten an honorary ring for helping ND that year.

ND literally provides the # on its site:
On average (not football-specific) an ND grad out-earns by 1.4 Million lifetime.

That's vs. a high school graduate. I'd be interested to see a Virginia Tech etc. vs ND degree in 2025 figures.

GT is more difficult to get into than ND. The average SAT scores are higher. Plus they have fewer "easy" majors than ND. Even if they have the money it would be a stretch for them to be competitive year in and year out

That’s my point. It teams like Ole Miss or Texas Tech or SMU can prove the commitment to paying players, what else does a coach need? They don’t have to be HC of Bama or OSU and still compete for NC.
They need that commitment proven over years, and not just to buying one-year rentals but to developing players (which is the real reward of coaching).
Having guys who play three or four years in your program and buying in and growing together into the sort of team that can not just make the playoffs (as Indiana did last year, as Texas Tech and Ole Miss will this year) but that can win the whole darned thing (as an Ohio State did last year, as Georgia or A&M or Notre Dame could this year). If you're a coach who really wants to be great, I think that's what you're looking for.

IDK about easy majors but getting into Notre Dame and getting into Georgia Tech from out of state is pretty comparable. Acceptance rate of around 9 percent, SAT range of 1450-1550. Per the internet.

Interesting 247 post by a UW staffer. Pretty sure most of these have been reported already minus a few.
Lupoi to Cal
Shepherd to Oregon St.
Florida going after Riley. SC would go after DeBoer if that happened.
Brennan from Arizona appears to be the guy for UCLA with Fisch another option.

How DARE you bring that up! It's still a sore subject amongst my tribe.

If Florida doesn't get Kiffin, and with Drinkwitz off the market, they'll need to go after someone if they hope to upgrade/inspire their fans. And Florida never travels anywhere so Riley should be cool with that. But does he know you have to play defense to succeed in the SEC?

I remember that game quite well. I have the newspaper with the headlines from the game hanging in my office. Texas was #1. OU was #2 with a loss to Texas earlier. Jumping from 5 to 1 was still a surprise. The top five in the final poll all had one loss. Play of the game was early when Ross Browner nearly intercepted the pitch, but still forced the fumble.

I think the way that season played out shows the value of a CFP. For example, ND had an early season loss to a mid-team but got their QB situation figured out (thanks Joe!) & by season’s end had gelled enough as a team that they were able to absolutely annihilate the #1 team in the country.

Which would mean Reesus returning to Alabama. I’m here for it.
