Dantonio left his old employer in the lurch by retiring when he did. Whichever HC they hired was going to get a huge payday b/c he & his agent held all the leverage. Tucker reportedly doubled his salary from CU to MSU.

I don’t think UT can go w/ Steele as a one-year bridge b/c it kills recruiting. Remember when Petrine got fired & Johnelle served as interim? They still haven’t recovered from that.

This skips over the WHY they give the contract they did and why I think it’s a good model for Tennessee. Giving in to “all the leverage” sure Mel’s salary seems like that. But the assistant salary pool, the length accommodation for sanctions, Tucker’s obligation to pay MSU back all show a desire to elevate the program as a whole, not just toss in a hot name to win 10 games once and have him climb the ladder to a new job.

They need A) a right hire, doesn’t even need to be a “home run” just needs to be someone who can stabilize and B) give the person a proper contract, if that means extended length or contingencies, something that attracts someone and gives them a shot even. Mel Tucker’s contract for example.

They need a Brian Kelly type hire. Thing is NO WAY the fanbase/boosters give whoever it is 6-10 years to figure it out.

Love that Lea hired Rick Minter's son from the Ravens to be his DC.

Purdue getting Lambert from Marshall is a great DC hire for them. Major upgrade from Holt and Diaco.

Fickell tapped Mike Tressel from Michigan State as his DC.

Three moves I really like. Also like that the Ravens defensive staff is getting picked apart, too.

That would be Jesse Minter. He was a DB coach at Indiana State before moving to Georgia St. with his old coach at Indiana State Trent Miles. He went to the Ravens after GS canned Miles.

I worked with his wife Rachelle at my former employer. When she was introduced I jokingly asked her if she was related to Rick Minter. She was surprised I recognized the name. She was a cutie.

I mean, if I'm Bienemy, do I want to go to the Jets, Lions or Eagles? Even the Texans have a grim looking long term right now considering their roster and the draft picks they lack going forward.

Maybe he's waiting for Andy Reid to call it quits and Bienemy can take over with Mahomes behind the wheel. Not a bad career plan.

I just don't believe that what he had done 20+ years ago is the reason why he hasn't taken over the big chair yet. There are clauses in contracts just like there are for players. You fuck up, you're gone. Simple. He appears to be out of trouble as far as we know, and he got to OC during the last two decades.

Maybe he's waiting for the right gig. Or someone is waiting for him.

Eric Bieniemy will get shut out again. What does that guy have to do to get a head coach job?

Charlie Weis had it even harder. Was an OC for 7 or 8 years and won 3 rings. Never did happen for him at the pro level. Believe he thought it was because of his weight.

SIAP elsewhere but Tennessee hired Danny White as AD. Fantastic hire. The guy knows how to hire. ND grad and father was AD here.

His hire record:

Buffalo: Bobby Hurley, Lance Leipold and Nate Oats
UCF: Scott Frost and Josh Heupel

Does he circle back to Leipold and really shake things up?

Yup, White is home run IMO. Comes from a great sports family too.

He's a guy I'd always though would end up at ND some day.

Great get for UT. Going to be interesting to see who he chooses for HC.

Anyone know who was our main recruiter/s during the Charlie Weiss years? We had some good Offensive skill players back then.

Rob Ianello was the Recr Coord and WR coach. Haywood was RBs coach and did decent. CW of course was involved in the skill guys too.

Ed Warinner is out at Michigan. Comments saying he is either going to Jacksonville with Meyer or staying at Michigan as an analyst.

Haven’t heard that name in awhile. Big time star LB at Auburn back in the day.

Sounds like Elliott is Tennessee’s top target. Can that coaching staff finally get a clean dent?

Maybe it’s just me but kind of crazy that they went that route over a guy like Fleck.

EDIT: misread a post, seems Fleck could be a choice

247 thinks Campbell is their target. I’d imagine that would be a no. The Elliott talk today has come from Mike Farrell

Some talk he said no to them.

Got it. I had not read that. That would make more sense.

You beat my edit lol. I misread a post about Fleck there’s nothing about him saying no thanks yet, but I’d go Campbell if I was them just don’t think he’d say yes.

If it were me I’d go Campbell as well but didn’t think he was a realistic option. I thought I saw a tweet where it mentioned some candidates and Campbell wasn’t included.

I have a hard time seeing Campbell take that job. He can coach at Iowa State as long as he’s drawing breath. Tennessee, OTOH, is a revolving door with meddlesome boosters and high expectations.

If that’s what Campbell wanted he could have had FSU eating out of his hand and there he’d have an easier schedule and recruiting grounds.

Yeah, I have a feeling Campbell has already turned down jobs better than Tennessee. That job isn't as good as it was 20 years ago when Bama, Georgia, Clemson, and LSU were all mediocre.

Cycle's not over so knock on wood... but as a part-time Buffalo fan, I can't believe we've gone another year without Lance Leipold getting poached.
