Fuuuuck.

Absolutely unreal vocal talent. Passed up the chance to see Temple of the Dog live last year; I'm going to regret that for a loooong time.

Local media is reporting suspected suicide. You just never know the demons people are wrestling with.

Let's not forget he was the lead singer for Audioslave too with members from Rage Against the Machine.

Loved both groups.

Very very sad.

EDIT: I guess it states that in the article

I have had many friends die of suicides. This song basically encapsulates everything about those events. I hope Chris found peace.

Birth Ritual
Soundgarden
Lying like needles
On forest earth
Euphoric rush
Trees bend to pray for us
I'm sputtering
Like cold machines
Late for the birth ritual, ritual, ritual, ritual
You can drive my tail
To watch the circus
A birth ritual
A birth of idiots
Now I woke up blessed
And good strives for heartache
Marked for the death ritual, ritual, ritual
As you start the song
And face this garden
I light a cigarette before the execution
Now you see your crime
For every miracle
Add another drug at every birth ritual
I took the drug
To make me stay
And now everything
Dies in shyness
The snake retreats
Admits defeat
And waits for the birth ritual, ritual, ritual
As you start the song
And face this garden
I light a cigarette before the execution
Now you…

Kurt Cobain
Layne Staley
Scott Weiland
Chris Cornell

Eddie Vedder is the last man standing.

In August of 1991, Pearl Jam released Ten. In September, Nirvana released Nevermind. In October, Soundgarden released Badmotorfinger.

That's a solid 90-day period.

Man this one hurts. One of my all time favorite musicians. Everything he did was great. Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Audioslave, his solo stuff...all fucking great. RIP Chris.

Absolutely devastated. This is why I go out of the way to see shows like TOG and U2's Joshua Tree 2.0. You never know when these voices will go silent. Theses guys wrote the soundtrack of my life. RIP my brother.

Smashing Pumpkins is alt rock for me, not Grunge.

Mother Love Bone is Seattle Grunge and started the movement, but it was late 80s and they were not part of my mainstream high school limited attention span. I didn't really know about them until college.

Shannon Hoon has no part of the conversation, though "No Rain" is one of the all time tracks from that era.

I'm standing by my original post.

Same here. I loved his solo stuff where he was a master at taking another song and totally turning into his own. He was brilliant.

I don't want to just throw out speculation, but the reports are he was found in the bathroom with a band around his neck.... Possible autoerotic asphyxiation?

No. He battled depression, anxiety and addiction most of his life. Wife spoke to him after concert and he was slurring his words which prompted her to call security to check on him.

I hope you find peace. Incredible artist, was 22 when Pearl Jam released Ten, discovered Soundqarden shortly thereafter. Grunge has been a part of my DNA ever since. Huge loss! Rogue, maybe you need to go back and check out Blind Melon in a different frame of mind, IMO Hoon absolutely belongs in that list of artists. Another huge talent that unfortunately was not meant long for this world. These artists open their mouths and their souls pour out.

I don't consider Blind Melon grunge. Alt rock, folk rock, etc. The self titled album from 1992 sounds nothing like Nirvana, PJ, AIC, STP or Soundgarden.

I like Blind Melon, but they're not in that particular group for me.

Would anyone dispute that Cornell was the best rock vocalist of the past 2-3 decades? His voice was so unique, and his range was massive. I'm struggling to think of anyone else that could even give him a run for his money in that time frame.

Aaron Lewis as far as range. How much you like his voice is all a matter of opinion but the range is undeniable. Corey Taylor as well. Or Chester Bennington before Linkin Park went to sh!t.

He's in the same league as Robert Plant, Ronnie James Dio (say what you want about the dude but he can sing) ect...in my opinion. Actually, I would put him in there with the best vocalists period in the past 30 plus years from all genres.

Bennington is similar in having a unique voice with a solid range. Don't think he deserves to be mentioned alongside Cornell though. I like Taylor, but by "range" I don't simply mean a guy with a decent singing voice who can also growl/ wail; the Scandinavian metal scene is full of vocalists like that. And I wouldn't call his voice unique.

There aren't many vocalists who can pull off something low key like Flutter Girl:

As well as a belter like Say Hello 2 Heaven:

Actually MLB created the end of the Seattle scene's formation. Wood's death and the demise of MLB gave birth to PJ and Mudhoney. Those two bands basically finalized the roster.

Every other major band involved in the Seattle sound was before MLB with exceptions to Mudhoney (formed at the same time as MLB from the break up of Green River. Mark Arm and Steve Turner left to form Mudhoney while Ament Gossard & Bruce Fairweather left Green River, joined by Malfunkshin's Andrew Wood to form MLB.)

Upon Wood's death, Ament & Gossard recruit Mike McCready, Eddie Vedder and Dave Krusen to form what would become Pearl Jam after starting off as Mookie Blaylock.

So the Melvins, Malfunkshun, Green River, Screaming Trees & Soundgarden were all mid 80's, even Nirvana and Alice N Chains were formed before MLB.

As far as style, MLB still had Wood's glammy hairband feel but Gossard and Ament really grew at this time, maybe from having to synthesize their thrashy Green River sound with Wood's desire to be an edgier version of the standard MTV Poison rock that was on the way out.

Gotcha. Yeah, I guess we're talking semantics and I don't even know how I would exactly define grunge, but for me they are at least very close cousins, same angst same desperation. As far as sound Blind Melon was closest to Soundgarden and Alice In Chains of the Seattle bands imo. Realized long ago that Eddie Vedder had learned to reconcile his personal issues with Celebrity, was hoping Chris had as well.
