BYU and Miami have been the loudest. Bama was loud last Tuesday and Wednesday but have mostly given it up. I guess they remembered they still control their own destiny.
It's truly stunning when you have Ohio State fans begging and pleading to not see ND in the playoff because they know how good we are, meanwhile you have BYU fans saying we don't even belong in the same conversation. Bizzarro world

Ohio State fans know a good team when they see it. BYU fans have seen nothing but Big 12 for too long. That’s all.

Gray is better than Devonta Smith too, I can't believe that's controversial.
I figured someone would think this. No clue why because pff and eye test clearly say smith is significantly better

We’re comparing gray as field corner to smith as nickel.

What are those awful big or critical plays smith has given up this year?

Smith isn’t Moore by any means, he’s given up a few 10 yd outs and had a holding/pi or two. Bur he’s better than gray at their respective positions, very obvious.

They honestly play such different positions that comparing them to one another is silly

The question proposed is who is our weakest link on D? Direct comparison is not necessary other than who is playing their respective position better or worse?

The intent of the question is to better understand how teams capable will attack our D? I have my thoughts, they’re obvious.

How so? The question was who is our weakest link starting on D? Hinish isn’t and hasn’t been starting for awhile.
They keep listing him as the starter. If he's not, why not an "or" like they do every other time it's a platoon. It's your question though.

Beat ND in the trenches and you will have opportunities to win. Unless they aren't playing football and you mean something different

Anyone actually have any inside info about what the hell really went on?

Freeman more involved?

The players finally bought in?

Everyone needed time to adjust to each other and finally started to click?

The turn around has miraculous
Some professional will write the story after the season, I'm sure.

People can point to personnel changes, normal growing pains, tweaks to how/when we're blitzing, etc.

I think the reality is that some players also had "step dad" syndrome with him replacing Golden and that was exacerbated by some assistant coaches as well as Ash's personality which he has to own. I think Freeman held people accountable and cut through the bullshit. I think Ash took ownership of the group and also finally got the leadership/buy in from the players he needed.

And look... this is all speculative... but when you look at players being demonstrably confused/misaligned pre-snap, terrible body language from both players and coaches, lots of glaring execution breakdowns, etc. it's extremely clear that there was a disconnect in those first couple games. It wasn't just some changes at safety and nickel that magically solved 100% of our issues. There was definitely a mental and coaching component.

Last thing I'll say is that Freeman has never tolerated leaks and there were definitely some assistants putting "their side" out in the media and people stfu heading into Arkansas which tells me that at least part of that meeting was getting people to stop acting like catty bitches and start rowing the same direction.

Another 3 great quarters of defense before the guys started to mail it in.

Really not going to hold the fourth quarter in a blowout against him, also their quarterbacks just started making throws for what it’s worth.

IMHO, we have some sort of training camp problem.

Last year, it wasn’t really defensively that slow start of a year (Just off the top of my head… could be wrong). This year I think the slow start can be blamed on the install of a new DC needing to understand personnel.

Offensively, last year’s slow start is IMO likely Leonard missing spring ball, and this year Carr not being chosen as the starter until late into camp.

MF doesn't tell us a lot but when that man speaks we should listen. That press conference after A&M told us there was an internal problem, he knew it, he thought it was addressed, but now he's making sure it's addressed. That message was for more than just Chris Ash. Ash was going to accept much of the public complaint because that's the job duties, but that press conference where he told us there were a lot of uncomfortable conversations tells us more than well ever know for now

Do we have to worry about him moving on to some new job? Probably.
As a head coach or NFL DC? Unlikely (unless he really burns to run his own program in the MAC or Sun Belt). As a college DC? Why would he?
