Bummer. Lived in ATL for 6 years and followed the Braves pretty closely, but pretty disconnected with baseball right now. Is he still a big piece of the offensive puzzle for them? He's pretty long in the tooth...makes you wonder if its a career ending injury.

Probably one of the most underrated players in baseball...Torn his ACL on a great play..My bet is that he will retire...nice guy, met him a few times, famous for chasing Hooters girls.

they saying he may try to come back next year but doesn't look good. he's 38 and he's going to miss most of next year with rehab so he probably will retire.

While married...right? I always liked Larry, my wife did not. Infidelity. The other white meat.

Nothating the Yanks or Jeter (he's one of my favs), just pointing out a fact...

If Chipper played his career with the Yanks he'd be as big if not bigger than Jeter... but... he's played every season in ATL... so few people outside of baseball fans even know who the guy is...

what i will always remember about chipper is when mlb went on strike in the early 90,s.one of the replacement players was murdered down in fla. and he was the only player on the team who had the decency to pick up the phone and call the players wife and give his condolences.a class act by a class player

This hurts the Braves, and while I don't care much for the Braves, I DON'T want the Phillies in the playoffs again.

i agree with you. if he would have played in a big baseball market he would be a bigger name. I got to watch him over the years a the guy was just at great. that was a sweet play that he got hurt making.

Perhaps in LA.

Ted Turner plastered Braves baseball across America's TV sets in an attempt to make Atlanta "America's Team" while Steinbrenner took the Yankees off free TV to a subscription market. My wife knows who Chipper Jones is. I'm not sure she could tell you what color a baseball is without looking.

I have no figures but Chipper Jones went into a lot more homes than Jeter did as a baseball player. As far as marketing their face endorsing products and making ET, that would be Jeter and a more aggressive marketing agent.

Both players have had great careers. Jones has used his bigger frame and extra 15 pounds to hit more HRs but he's not going to make it to the 500 Club. He's never hit 50. Had 4 good HR years in '98-'01 hitting 34, 45, 36, and 38. Not considered great years among HR hitters. Now he matches Jeter in annual home runs.

Jeter will make the 3000 hit club. He'll probably need about 60 after this season.

Timely article on Jeter today

let me put it this way... Jeter is the biggest name in the sport... put him in any other uniform and that isn't so. Not knocking DJ, that's just a fact. That "aggressive marketing" came his way because of where he plays. How many households even had TBS when Jones was at his peak??... I would be curious to see those numbers, not arguing, just wondering. Also... If your wife knows who Chipper Jones is hold on to that one. It's notlike I go arond talking to people about Chipper Jones, but regardless I can say with certainty that I have never talked to anyone who wasn't a total baseball fan who knew of Chipper Jones... I contend the biggest reason for that is because the dude plays for the Braves. If he did what he did for ATL in pin-stripes, he'd have a spot in pop culture beyond baseball... like Jeter. You don't agree?

Never thought you were knocking Jeter. I also don't think he's the biggest name in the sport. And the Yankees are the only baseball team I ever rooted for.

When Mantle was a Triple Crown Winner, NYC was the media capital. Not so today. Mantle was bigger name than Jeter in the sport. And he marketed Wheaties and some car dealership but he didn't do credit card commericals, nor cologne, nor make the females swoon. Jeter has the face and appearance of a model.

NYC or pinstripes isn't going to put Jeter in the Hall of Fame. 3,000 hits is. And he would have done that even if he played in Anaheim.

I would say he is the biggest name in the sport... Who is more known outside the sport? Ichiro, Pujols.... maybe... and i would never say he isn't a HOFer... also, who the hell knew who Vlad was before he got to Anaheim, thank you very much for that little knock.

Mantle is a beast all it's own... I'll leave that alone...

look, Jeter has a few things BEYOND stats going for him... he's led a team to a title, he's really freaking good, he's got charm, great with fans, he's good looking, he's had/has a fairly public love life, and he plays for the Yankees..

You can say the exact same thing for Chipper Jones on each point... except for one.

Chipper was one of my favorites growing up and it sucks his career wil (likely( end like this. Chipper was a pretty big name in his prime though, lots of commercials and magazine covers plus TBS pumping Braves baseball like Big IF said. Maybe not household name but certianly one of the more recognizable baseball players in his prime.

Should be a HOFer and was never named in any steroid case

According to Fanhouse Chipper Jones said Friday that he will have surgery and try to play in 2011.
I'm far from a Braves fan, but I have enjoyed watching this guy play.
