With so much organizational talent, having a top 5 pick vs a top 10 pick isn't going to make or break this teams direction.. It is more important for these kids to start learning how to win together.
The way the draft is structured now, I'd think this team would want to finish as low as possible, and they could still use a few more bats in that organizational talent chest. If it comes down to being in position to get a talent like FSU 3B Drew Mendoza (or whomever) you may want to not slip down too far.
Is there anything noble about going on a run and winning 70 games regardless of where this team is at? It's really about where they're going as opposed to where they are. If these guys can perform well individually and improve while losing, it's the best thing that could possibly happen. Tanking isn't as easy as it looks. Cubs and Astros did it right for a while.
I don't know what good comes from falling out of the top five in the long term. I still think their farm system's pitching is in better shape than the lineup.
Their remaining SOS is 7th. The Diamondbacks is first, but they are in a pennant race.
The scouting community suggests the top two bats in the 2019 Draft are both college catchers, but at this point, who cares? Madrigal is likely to play second and they have Moncada there. They seem to be adhering to a best available draft philosophy, which is a good thing for a rebuilding club. Remember the Cubs had a lot of middle infielders not long ago.
Wondering what this week brings on the waiver wire, if anything.
