I think I may be flipping sides here. I've defended this man and took into calculation the injuries and empty cupboards he came into.

But I am officially questioning whether or not he is the guy. And am now leaning "no". I always knew he was a gamble hire. And I knew it was an uphill battle.

But what I've seen from the discipline for the WR has scared me. Not being athletic or experienced is one thing. Absolutely absurd holds, pick plays, lack of effort?

It's unreal. I've never seen anything like this. Del at his worst at a better on the field product. These WRs look like they do not want to be out there. Faison is literally the only one I see busting his balls.
I will agree with you on the consistent effort bit. If they all played with the same sense of urgency as Faison I think we have quite a few more plays out there.

Honest question for better football minds—how much of the pick play issues come down to inexperience hindering execution or something else?

He got his best Freshman WR back today. How’d that work out?

Today’s effort was very concerning. This top 7 that could play anywhere is grossly underperforming those words.

With that said, I think it’s a program thing and not just Coach Stuck. He’s gotta be given another year.

Was Thomas hurt again? I saw him on the sideline during the game with his helmet off during late drives.

We need to jettison the entire offense. Bring in an OC from the outside and let him build his staff. Freeman needs to get out of the way as he obviously knows jack shit about offense.
Everyone rode Brain Kelly's ass for being loyal to his bad hires. You're on the clock Marcus.

I definitely give him the next 2 games. Then he better retain Williams and improve the WR room big time next year.

You might be on to something. There is to much talent in that room.

I would agree with this too. But one more year max.

ND never had this lack of talent under Del.

In 2017, he had EQ and Stepherson.
In 2018, he had Boykin and Claypool
in 2019, he had Claypool.

Each year, there was a reliable top flight receiver or receivers to rely on.

This year, that guy was supposed to be Jayden Thomas, who isn't on Boykin or Claypool level. And he's hurt.

The regular rotation right now is a bunch of guys who have next to zero experience. Greathouse is a true freshman coming off an injury, Flores is a true freshman, Faison is a freshman walk-on LAX player, Merriweather is a sophomore who barely played at all last year and has hit a wall, Tyree is a converted RB.

It shouldn't surprise anybody that a group that is comprised mostly of freshman with almost no experience have lapses in consistency and make dumb plays. None of these guys are Cam Williams types who are just absolute studs.

We shouldn't be in this situation, and that's Del and Kelly's doing.

Bingo.

The Tight End U and Fuckstick QB Tech all of the sudden wants the second year WR coach to work wonders with true freshmen. I'd put Parker in front of the bus before Stuckey.

Tyree: 8 targets, 4 catches
Estime: 5 targets, 4 catches
Faison: 3 targets, 2 catches
Merriweather: 4 targets, 1 catch
Staes: 4 targets, 1 catch
Flores: 1 target, 1 catch
Greathouse: 3 targets, ZERO catches.

You'd better believe this is a program thing.

This.

Have to also say that Hartman is doing them zero favors. I was expecting Hartman to help elevate the level of play for the receivers. The opposite has happened. His struggles are bringing the unit down even more.

Problem is that we’re not seeing much growth as the year goes on in these young wr’s. Hell greathouse seems like he’s gotten worse.

Should've brought in better transfers
Would be ideal if there were any.

I don't recall any legitimately good transfers that were options. Maybe Dante Cephus, but he hasn't exactly done much at Penn State.

Problem is that WR isn't exactly going to have a lucrative grad market to hit, and until ND does something to fix the issues with undergrad, that's a non-starter.

I agree. Again, have noticed beginning with the CMU game. It has gotten progressively tougher and more frustrating for him, and now without Evans there as his safety net, he's got a long 120 minutes of football left. I assume he plays in the bowl game.

This year the guy was supposed to be Styles who Del had tracking well.

I mean, he was injured for a large chunk of the middle of the year.

Yeah unfortunately I don't know what the solution is. We'll never be able to rely on transfers, and we see flashes from young players but can't seem to find any consistency from a single WR on the roster after two years

Tyree leads the WRs with 23 catches this year (barely 2 per game LOL)

Obviously Stuckey started in a bad situation, but he hasn't been a home run hire by any means. I'm not saying he should be fired, but if there's a new OC who wants to bring in his own WR coach, Freeman shouldn't hesitate

I bumped this thread
And I think no year 3
It's hard for me to say that but I want a proven developer
Due to his recruiting prowess I give him another year, unless there is a home run hire willing to come in. There is no development occurring, literally zero improvement in any WR — but there a plenty of confounding factors, it’s truly difficult to determine who is most at fault. If the talent is there, then finding a replacement for CS won’t be a problem after next year.

Hartman isn't the problem with our WR group, WTF would anyone think that?

After today's game our #1 WR in yards is the guy who is out for the season and he's the TE.

My problem with the WR group is no one has stepped up to be a #1 WR.
