Might as well call it Boot Camp Kelly.
It should be an interesting first few months for Irish players, some of whom have a sense of "entitlement," according to new coach Brian Kelly.
"I sense a bit of entitlement that needs to be rectified," Kelly said Monday morning while meeting with a small group of reporters at the American Football Coaches Association.
"I think the challenges are within. Some of our issues are self-inflicted wounds ... This is that time when you say winning's a choice. You don't have to buy the big steak on the menu. Choose another item. The thing is, that's the one I'm choosing."
Kelly has "rectified" in the past. He had his players go through Camp Kelly all four seasons he was at Cincinnati. The football-less drills are meant to develop mental and physical toughness. There is a tug-of-war competition and a tire toss. One witness at Cincinnati jokingly compared it to the Festivus episode of Seinfeld.
"Lots of 'feats of strength,' the source said."
The new coach plans to invite some media in next month to observe the drills, in part as a reaction to the recent player mistreatment accusations at Kansas, Texas Tech and South Florida.
In this case, Camp Kelly might be nothing more than the normal weeding out by a new coach. Arizona's Mike Stoops was famous a few years ago for his vomit-inducing offseason drills when he took the job.
"It's been really pretty easy [within the program]," Kelly said. "It's been a good deal. We're all looking for good deals. We can't have one at Notre Dame."
I understand that no one wants to make him out to be a savior until BK proves it on Saturday's, but this has to be encouraging. I am happy that he's taken the initiative and started making these kids earn their positions. CW treated the team like his "sons," not football players. He wanted to be their friend and their football coach - which yielded talented but mentally weak players. BK seems to use the 'cut them down, make them grow back stronger' mentality. No more entitlement, no more following the script regardless of who is playing well - under BK I hope it's if you're playing well, you're on the field regardless of where you started the season on the depth chart. Toughening these kids up can't do any harm. We looked pathetic in the trenches and the 4th quarter. Less time trying to find the last girl at the bar at Club Fever, more time running Longo Beach.
... He thinks the official "Camp Kelly" will start in about 2-3 weeks from now.
...
So this current phase is puking conditioning drills.
... He also said that, he feels, that people are really buying into what he's saying. Now, I realize that it is very easy to say that at this stage. They need to follow through with the doing. But it's a good sign.

Just talked to a friend on the team. He said that workouts were still going really well. All of the players are impressed with Longo, as he is tough but seems to really have a terrific way of explaining what the lifts are vital for. He says that he talks personally with all of them. The workouts are consisting of mostly lifting exercises followed by "cardio" work at the end. He says they have been hard, but also kind of fun.
He hasn't heard yet when Camp Kelly will begin.
As far as the EE's, he continues to say that all of them are really easy to get along with. As he is a DB, he has talked the most with Chris Badger, Spencer Boyd, and Lo Wood. He has been really impressed with Tommy Rees as well, however. He likes his work ethic, and he thought it seems he has good leadership potential.

Great post.
I think Wood goes to safety...just my opinion.
