I was just wondering if anyone had heard anything about Camp Kelly? I cannot remember the last time, if ever, I was so excited to hear about an off-season workout session.

I would imagine that it was rather grueling, especially with the amount of time off since season end.

* Brian Smith, MR. Twitter, only said, "Today I have the worst fever ever... workin out with it was awful. I need meds!!"

* Toma on Facebook: BOY workouts were killah!!!! Gotta LUV it!!!

* Around 9:30, Taylor Dever: "We do more before breakfast than you do all day!" Trevor then quoted emerson: "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us."

*From ISD: Badger posted on facebook that he had his first workout this morning. He said he went real hard and threw up his smoothie.

That's all I could find...

Love it, a smoothie before working out.

Thats like a big glass of milk before a 5 mile (catapillar style) batallion run.

heres an article about Boot Camp Kelly

Might as well call it Boot Camp Kelly.

It should be an interesting first few months for Irish players, some of whom have a sense of "entitlement," according to new coach Brian Kelly.

"I sense a bit of entitlement that needs to be rectified," Kelly said Monday morning while meeting with a small group of reporters at the American Football Coaches Association.

"I think the challenges are within. Some of our issues are self-inflicted wounds ... This is that time when you say winning's a choice. You don't have to buy the big steak on the menu. Choose another item. The thing is, that's the one I'm choosing."

Kelly has "rectified" in the past. He had his players go through Camp Kelly all four seasons he was at Cincinnati. The football-less drills are meant to develop mental and physical toughness. There is a tug-of-war competition and a tire toss. One witness at Cincinnati jokingly compared it to the Festivus episode of Seinfeld.

"Lots of 'feats of strength,' the source said."
The new coach plans to invite some media in next month to observe the drills, in part as a reaction to the recent player mistreatment accusations at Kansas, Texas Tech and South Florida.

In this case, Camp Kelly might be nothing more than the normal weeding out by a new coach. Arizona's Mike Stoops was famous a few years ago for his vomit-inducing offseason drills when he took the job.

"It's been really pretty easy [within the program]," Kelly said. "It's been a good deal. We're all looking for good deals. We can't have one at Notre Dame."

Eric Hansen's Twitter: "Thursday was the first day of offseason conditioning .... Kelly said 7 players threw up before the team was finished stretching."

"We didn't have time for a big group hug. We had to go right to work ND coach Brian Kelly said"

Some of Kellys quotes are just weird. I dont get them.

I really dont give a f--- about all this quirky bullshit. I care about Saturdays at 1 pm. I care about end result. If this goofball crap means we thrash Michigan by 30 then fine.

I refuse to fall for any of this again where we make a guy a legend 5 games into a season like the last 2 coaches.

BK seems to be taking the same approach that Lou did when he arrived. That worked out pretty well.

I understand that no one wants to make him out to be a savior until BK proves it on Saturday's, but this has to be encouraging. I am happy that he's taken the initiative and started making these kids earn their positions. CW treated the team like his "sons," not football players. He wanted to be their friend and their football coach - which yielded talented but mentally weak players. BK seems to use the 'cut them down, make them grow back stronger' mentality. No more entitlement, no more following the script regardless of who is playing well - under BK I hope it's if you're playing well, you're on the field regardless of where you started the season on the depth chart. Toughening these kids up can't do any harm. We looked pathetic in the trenches and the 4th quarter. Less time trying to find the last girl at the bar at Club Fever, more time running Longo Beach.

I'm with you Triple T. Getting beat because the other guy is better than you is one thing. Getting beat because you're not as mentally and physically tough and prepared as the other guy is inexcuseable. Time will tell, and recent experience makes all of us cynical, but my chips are on BK.

They're gonna win boys, I can feel it. Just hope the first year doesnt have to many close losses like Lou's first year. If they overcome that they are going to be geared up to win. Kelly will win if they buy into this. I wouldnt want to be a player right now but come next November they may be very happy they went thru this.

they werent working hard enough if they have the strength to twittle.

the only way to win on saturdays is to work hard in january and february and....

as much as the kids loved their last coach they will love a coach who pushes them harder than they ever realized they could be pushed.

I played college soccer and every year we dreaded 3 a days in FL in August, but it made gametime seem easy. You only get out of it as much as you put into it.

Time to put down the BK Kool-Aid, or you may puke it up.

It is encouraging.

Sorry this took me awhile. I just talked to my good friend who's on the team. He said that they have had two lifting sessions already, and they will continue those from now on. He thinks the official "Camp Kelly" will start in about 2-3 weeks from now.

He said that, in his opinion, Longo is a HUGE improvement from Reuben. Where Mendoza was basically a prick, Longo is a motivator who explains the reasons for each lift. This way the players know which part of the form is totally vital to the lift, in order to get the intended muscle reaction.

So this current phase is puking conditioning drills.

Haha! I guess so - he said that there was a lot of running in that famous "stretching" period. He also said that, he feels, that people are really buying into what he's saying. Now, I realize that it is very easy to say that at this stage. They need to follow through with the doing. But it's a good sign.

Yes it is. And that's all we've got at the moment with which to keep score.

Just talked to a friend on the team. He said that workouts were still going really well. All of the players are impressed with Longo, as he is tough but seems to really have a terrific way of explaining what the lifts are vital for. He says that he talks personally with all of them. The workouts are consisting of mostly lifting exercises followed by "cardio" work at the end. He says they have been hard, but also kind of fun.

He hasn't heard yet when Camp Kelly will begin.

As far as the EE's, he continues to say that all of them are really easy to get along with. As he is a DB, he has talked the most with Chris Badger, Spencer Boyd, and Lo Wood. He has been really impressed with Tommy Rees as well, however. He likes his work ethic, and he thought it seems he has good leadership potential.

I LOVE Lo Wood. I saw him play, and he doesn't have the greatest speed, but he has great ball skills. I don't know too much about Boyd (too far south for me to scout).

Sounds like Tommy is out to make an impression! That's great that he's only an 'EE', yet signs of leadership potential are evident. Gotta love that coming from a young QB!

Great post.

I think Wood goes to safety...just my opinion.

Hey all!
Sorry I haven't posted in awhile, but I usually don't post if I feel I have nothing to add on the situation.

Anyway, I talked to a friend on the team today, and apparently the team had its second session of Camp Kelly within the past three days. Their first session was sometime earlier in the week I believe. He said that it was hard, but was certainly do-able. Lots of non-fundamental training methods which he compared to military style "breaking down and building up" workouts. He said the overall attitude has been very good this far.

Also, he can't say enough good things about Longo and what he is trying to accomplish. He felt that he had gotten physically stronger under Mendoza, but that his endurance had dropped off significantly. He told me that one day, while Kelly and Longo were speaking to them they told him that "Since we have been working together, when our team has entered the fourth quarter leading, we are 49-1!" While he recognized you can spin statistics how you want, this is pretty darn impressive nonetheless.

Also, he confirmed that Lane Clelland is making the move to DE. Paskorz will be making the move to LB. Now, he is a DB and has not heard anything from within the program about Cierre moving to safety. He said that he has heard people outside of the program talk about it, but he has heard nothing as of yet.

He has been impressed with Coach Martin thus far, and he said that he has been talking to Golden regularly. Golden has been living in Keenan for at least this past week in order to prepare for the Pro Day.

If anyone has other questions they would like me to ask him, I would be happy to! I just want to thank everyone again, especially BGIF, for all of the work on keeping track of the recruiting during this confusing period of offering and interest gathering!! Thank you!
