So I think we either land 2/3 of these kids or none at all. If we only land one of them it is Payton.

The big domino would be Arik Armstead. I think he's likely going to Cal, but if we can persuade him otherwise then it may convince one or two others to come to ND rather than Cal.

They just got a commitment from Darius Powe

Still plenty of room left in this class so it is doubtful this has any impact on Payton. Right now Cal is looking good for a clean sweep.

EDIT: Powe is actually either the 3rd or 4th WR commit to Cal depending on what side of the ball some of their athletes play on... so this is interesting to watch.

Huh?

Lol I'm just busting your *** but this cracked me up. We'll either get 2 or more, or none. If we get one though, it will be Payton. Nicely done sir.

Also just wanted to say that if we are going to lose all these kids to one school in California, Cal is ok in my book. Different then years past.

Actually, Cal is losing a bunch of receivers and they have lost a few receivers who have left the team in the past couple of years, so they are looking at taking 6 receivers this class. Yes, 6.

Lol I was iffy with the sentences when I typed them up myself because I'm pretty much saying we end up with 1, 2, or 3. What I meant though is that if we get Payton, I don't think that persuades anyone else to come, but if we convince Armstead, we may end up with three of these guys with Payton definitely being one.

I should have said 3 or 4 or something. lol

Wild West Board rumors

Wild West Board rumors

the Wild West Board (USC) has a couple of posters claiming that Shaq Thompson and Amir Armstead have committed to CAL

One poster also says that Armstead's older brother will transfer to Cal from USC to join his younger brother.

AGAIN-just posters on the Wild West site-no other confirmation that I can find anywhere

Yeah, the rumor is that Armond will transfer there and Arik will commit there accordingly. We'll see what happens at this point it is nothing but rumors (much like Stanley). If they actually committed it would have been leaked (see: Darius Powe).

I thought once a player signs a LOI, those letters usually have a clause that the player can't transfer to a school in the same conference?

How in the hell does a garbage football program like Cal keep reeling in top talent?

I do not see why everyone thinks that Cal is a garbage football program. The school is amazing, the weather, girls, very good education, NFL factory, and hometown kids from NorCal can stay home so the family can watch the games in person. Oh, and don't forget about Tosh Lupoi who is one of the best recruiters out there. Only thing holding that program back is the head coach who seems to be in the hot seat every year and consistently hangs onto him job. Tedford needs to go but Cal continually holds onto him.

Well he'd be a grad student and able to do the grad student exception thing PLUS he's not cleared medically which likely means he's entirely released from his scholarship... but really I just don't know. It's a very complex situation. I've also never heard about that being a clause in a LOI... I certainly don't remember seeing anything like that myself. I'm pretty sure when you want to transfer you have to get a release from the school and they typically don't give you a release to play at any of their opponents. Like how Cam Newton went to JUCO for a year before going back to the SEC.

Either way, this is total 100% rumor right now (and a rumor I don't really believe) so it's probably not worth spending our time pouring over it. Shaq committing makes sense because he's always been basically a soft commit to Cal... but yeah, stay tuned for the next week. We'll see what happens.

I can't imagine Cal clearing his brother to play if USC won't. Seems like that would be a risk that could potentially blow up in their face. Interesting rumor nonetheless

I think you are probably right.

Not that it's important, but maybe someone knows off the top of their head: just how many newbies CAN Cal take? I ask because I brought up their spring roster and counted only 21 seniors there, of which a small number [but not zero] hadn't used a redshirt yet, and it seemed at a crude glance that they might only have about 17 slots [if they kept something like four fifth years]. They are I believe at 13 commits currently. That would still leave room for all or these muchachos who like to ride together, but only just. AND they still have major Line positions to fill on both sides.

None of my analysis may make sense, but I wonder if there is a filling up problem even there. [example: 20 of the offers they still have out are to linemen]. [they list Spence and Odenigbo as DEs].

I've been wondering myself because they have all these big name guys who may just go there (Payton, Armstead, Adams, Shaq, etc.) but their last two commits (to my knowledge) have been two low rated WRs.

Cal is taking 26-28 (3 EEs) depending on how things go. RE: Armond no release is needed under the graduate transfer rule. Can't say if he'll get clearance but the release won't be the issue.
