Assuming Utah wins tonight, I'm thinking...

#1 Miami
#2 Ohio State
#3 BYU
#4 Georgia
#5 Ole Miss
#6 Texas Tech
#7 Utah
#8 UCLA
#9 Notre Dame
#10 Indiana
#11 Tennessee

Tennessee will absolutely be above ND. Indiana most likely, too.

Then you have to start worrying about UCLA, Kentucky, Ok. State, and USC. ND very well might not control their own destiny from this point forward.

1. BYU runs a high school style offense. They are basically a very physical version of the late 00’s Boise teams. Defense figured it out, then forgot it did when it mattered near the end. Think Ash got in his head too much and didn’t just use what was working. Driving a Camry is fine if it gets you where you need to go.

2. Carr had probably his worst game. Sailed passes, inexcusable mistake before half, etc.

3. Denbrock let his offense down by showing the creativity of a Jerry Kill coached Minnesota team (play calling after INT showed zero killer instinct, and of course the rest of game was also a mismanaged shit show too). Completely unacceptable day at the office for him in that spot.

4. No QB that wears #47 should be the toast of the town after he plays you. Not a good look to let such a mid player be such a hero. Darian Mensah would have secured his Heisman invite tonight if we played them. I digress, #47 did what he needed to when he needed to.

5. BYU showed up ready to win and did. GGs to them. Sitake is a great coach.

6. The game is on the line. Don’t snap the ball where the QB is hunched over to catch it every single time.

Despite all this:

Other highly regarded teams had much worse losses today.

Still control what happens in January, but there is now absolutely zero room for error. Win out or the whole season is a failure at every level. You can’t talk about LEAVE NO DOUBT, if you create doubt, which they unfortunately did tonight.

Bad loss tonight, but doesn’t carry the same weight as others we have seen, so there’s that. I’d be more worried if the team just folded at half.
I noticed that about the snaps as well throughout the game. What's up with the center? You would think that can really through Carr off continually having to reach down for the shotgun snaps.

That second half offensive playcalling is the most egregious case of FUCKING BULLSHIT I’ve ever seen in my life.

HOW MANY FUCKING TIMES DOES THE DEFENSE NEED TO GET OFF THE FUCKING FIELD AND BAIL YOUR GERIATRIC ASS OUT, MIKE?

Fuck that guy. Punt him into the sun.

Run up the middle behind Jack fucking Larsen as a lead back again, motherfucker.
Denbrock needs to be reevaluated. This was unforgivable

People can act like that's the end of the world but Georgia doesn't magically suck because they lost at home to Auburn. You're not defined by a singular game where you play like ass or the other team gets lucky or whatever.

BYU has a legit, Top 10 defense and Denbrock's deficiencies show up in games like that. It was always going to be hard to get to 30+ points but they also squandered wayyyyy too many short fields and had no answer for BYU just playing tons of man coverage. Like he is not scheming guys open, at all.

The bigger problem though is Chris Ash and there is no way that team should score 28. Played comical amounts of zone and had no answers in the first half. Guys lost, misaligned on many plays including a bust that led to their winning TD. 3rd and goal from the 6, and you bring a zero blitz from depth (????) and leave a true freshman with no help and tons of space to defend. Guy fucking sucks. All his juice numbers come against bad teams where offense builds a lead and he can tee off. If you want to play zone, then you need to get better at coaching it and / or run it in such a way that you don't give up BOTH easy chunks *and* large busts. I am so over it.
UGA has a coach who has proven that he can his team over the hump. I get that those teams were years ago and all of that, but he has built in credibility that quite frankly, Freeman and anyone associated with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football program don't have. When the media has faith in UGA, it is because it has been rewarded and the faith is probably warranted. We actually had a lot of people go to bat for us this last week and well, now we see why people hesitate to do that. When do we ever reward that?

Beat Miami.

I know everyone will say "well they barely beat FSU!" but Miami put up 580 yards of offense today.

There is nothing from ND's game today that makes me think we'll do anything to stop that offense. And more importantly (and I've said this 100 times tonight, so I apologize that I'm repeating myself), Miami fucking HATES Notre Dame; they'll play with emotion and fire, and I have no faith ND has anything in the tank to match that because they consistently fail to do so.

Wouldn't have an argument with Tennessee being ahead of ND. I kept them at #11. If ND is at #11 and they're swapped, I can live with that given ND's SOS and lack of quality wins.

- Didn’t want to live thread this one so I have sporadic in game thoughts.

- CJ Carr was the reason they lost this game. Like sorry if this offends but he was. He was overall good in the 1H but missed two TDs. Then the spike. Then he was legitimately bad in the 3Q when BYU was giving the game back to us. The entire pitch of this being a team that is elite is CJ Carr is elite. He played poorly. You aren’t going to beat good teams when he plays poorly.

- James showed up to play. Really not much to stay on there. I don’t think Walton’s usage was some egregious thing as he had 1H carries he did little with.

- Greathouse and Faison showed up, even though I would say Greathouse had a few he would want back. BYU has two good CBs and this time is gonna have issues against teams with two good CBs. Does every CFP team? No. But some do. Not having Graham ready to play but then targeting him with seconds left is unserious.

- The Denbrock segment can be wrapped in with TEs……I thought them having basically nothing special planned was insane. It seems the extent of it was slot fades. In game, I just don’t think the play calling was some black stain. First of all CJ checked into a ton of things. Like the first down run after the INT blown up was 100% a CJ check. Did Denbrock blow my socks off? No. But idk, would have like some more stuff schemed. Not gonna crucify him. Offense moved the ball great in 1H, got 10 pts out of because CJ missed multiple TDs. The TE slot fades I have an issue with that isn’t what most have. Flanigan and Larsen won their route, multiple times. CJ missed them. THAT being said, what is the chemistry like for CJ and these two? How many slot fades have we hit to them before today?

- OL was great all being said.

I don’t see us falling that far personally, but the lack of a good win will hurt us so it’s possible. Season comes down to Miami once again.

All you gotta do is Beat Miami and take care of business and we are in the playoffs. Miamis defense isn’t as good as BYu. Their DB’s are out or banged up. If we can’t get open on them then something is wrong.

Every single thing that happened after that pick are the demons that have defined the program. We all knew exactly what was going to happen because we’ve seen it happen 100 times over
Terrible drive when you have a chance to end the game? Check

Giving up a touchdown on the offenses last chance to get it? Check

Losing the game at the goal line on the last play? Check

Some ridiculous home cooking from conference officials that nobody outside the fanbase will ever acknowledge? Check

A signature win for some program you’re supposed to be better than? Check
That almost seems to be the entire point of our program.

The segment at the end of the first half. First, Denbrock calls a pass play over the middle and short of the sticks on third with no time outs and 10 seconds left. Absolutely moronic and begging for points to be left on the field.
Second on the spike there is a 3 seconds difference from when the ball is spiked to when someone jumps on it. In what world is that a clear recovery to be reviewed and given to the team that jumped on it? It wasn’t bang bang, that ball was dead before any move is made towards it

I think the problem is there are a lot of very good/good teams but not elite teams. Before this game I assumed we were "elite" and would have a very solid chance in the playoffs. After tonight I think it is gonna be a 12 team free for all which obviously makes our chances less certain(assuming we find a way in )

Until Carr puts it together against an actual team, I don’t think you can put ND over anyone in the top 10.

He’s 1-3 against teams worth a fuck. And, in his one win, he played like shit.
The most depressing thing about this is that I’m not 100% certain what the one win you’re referring to is. USC 2025?

If you’re Marcus Freeman and you’re a HC who isn’t a scheme guy and is more of a CEO, you have to have coordinators who you can trust to do the job.

He had that in Al Golden. Ash…he’s got it in spurts. He never had it with Gerry. And now he absolutely cannot trust Denbrock. Not at all.

Bring in Charlie Jr and light it up.
