This was ineptitude on the level of a Davie, Weis, or Willingham. Hoping like hell it's a fluke occurrence but the evidence suggests otherwise.

That game had strong echoes of Charlie Weis teams c 2008 and 2009 late season - losing games at the end with just utter stupidity

Not saying to fire Kelly either, but agree with LAX that Kelly was brutal today

Just really boneheaded effort by Kelly today. The 2-point conversion attempt made literally no sense. As LAX pointed out above, if we knee on it instead of running it that final possession, we can just punt it out of the end zone and NW gets the ball on their own 20 with about 10-15 seconds left. Honestly, what's the point in running the ball in that situation?

When we were up 11, we got the ball back with ~10 minutes left, and he made no effort to drain the clock. Throwing on 1st down and snapping the ball with 20+ left on the play clock. These things add up, clearly.

I'm not saying we should fire Kelly, but what we saw today was just abysmal. He looked like a guy learning on the job, not an experienced HC.

I'm not saying fire Kelly... but we're heading for 7-5. And he single handedly cost us this game.

I wont say that either, but if we do finish 7-5 then this program will be worse 5 years into his term than when he started. Just so many problems right now, including ball security being a joke and when its a team wide issue then it all falls on Kelly imo.

I'd be willing to look past this if Kelly can at least own the loss and put it ALL on him.

I mentioned this on twitter today, but I just don't understand how Notre Dame lets lesser opponents stay in games.

I do. there defense cannot stop anyone. we score long touchdowns on the very first drives of the game against Navy and Northwestern and wind up in dogfights because instead of jumping out to a 21-0 lead, it immediately becomes 7-7 or 13-9. it's ridiculous

This was a worse loss than Tulsa considering we are into year 5 under Kelly and Northwestern might actually have less talent than they did.

Tulsa finished 10-3 that year and ranked #24. Not saying the lose was excusable...but this one today is way worse.

This team always plays down to the competition. This time, it came back and bit them in the ass.

Time to eat some humble pie. This team is just not that good.

Why didn't we try to score at the end of regulation? We had the ball on the 35 with one timeout and enough time to run two or three plays.

Yeah, and Notre Dame simply isn't at the point where they reload every season. It's been a every-other-year sorta deal. 2010 was building for 2011. 2012 was building for 2013. 2014 is building for 2015.

That's just how it's going to be.

I did not watch the game but i read that he could take a knee and win the game but instead he ran with Mcdaniel and then he fumbled the ball. Is that true? It is so embarrasing if true.

I feel exactly how I did After the Champs Sports bowl loss.

We aren't talented enough really. Most of this is injuries/suspensions, but some of it is recruiting. I really don't know if we will ever have a top 5 quality team under Kelly.

They would have got the ball back with 15 seconds and no timeouts inside their 30.

99% true. Northwestern would've had 15 or so seconds left. Well, assuming the exchange works...it hasn't worked perfectly this season.

Also a 98.6% chance that McDaniel doesn't fumble the ball either. So I'm not as livid as others are about it.

But the going for two part...dafuq.

I don't feel that way at all. I get that Diaco's recruiting left ND horribly thin at DL and LB and they're paying for it right now though.

"Kelly said the decision for a 2 point conversion was "coin flip," decided to go for 2. Interesting"

Is this a joke?!?!?!??!!

Yeah Diaco sucked. I think next year was our best year to win anything but we are clearly not ready. Golson's not good enough to beat great teams with his turnovers.

Kelly is just as responsible as Diaco for that.

It starts and ends with the head coach.

Or how about the part where Northwestern put up 43 points...that's my biggest issue above all.

If we don't have a top 5 team next year we aren't going to have one under Kelly's tenure at Head Coach
