Breaking down ND/OU

They are used in the same fashion, lined up a little different. Both are very solid blockers, both have good hands, Millard has good vision when he does take a hand off, and makes people miss. I think they are similar enough to make a comparisson. Height wise, no, but style wise they are.

How are they used the same?

- Eifert blocks off of the edge, Millard behind the LOS.
- Millard takes handoffs, Eifert doesn't
- Millard gets most of his passes short, Eifert stretches the field.
- Millard utilizes screen plays, Eifert's catches mainly come on jump balls
- Eifert is faster than Millard
- Millard is a RB and Eifert is a TE

Again, no offense to Millard, he is a good player. But that is where the comparison to Eifert stops.

I'm aware of that. I wasn't saying that as an indictment of their run defenses, just saying that you can't compare them to OU holistically.
I don't think OU is a great team, but I don't think they are Stanford or Michigan State either. Our run defense doesn't have to completely shut you down to win this game.

Yes, your defense does need to shut down our running game to win. Otherwise, we will take the TOP and beat you with our defense. If you have watched any of our games, then you should be familiar what our defense does. In order to counter that, you will have to have more possessions than ND. You cant accomplish that unless you shut down our run game.

Your right they dont have to. And I realize Mike Stoops has a great track record in stopping the run and forcing teams to throw. But they play these games for a reason. I think ND wins a very very close hard fought rock em sock em type game. ND is going to force you to play a style of play you havent played and arent used to playing. KSU has a solid defense but I do think ours is much better. I dont have 100% faith in our secondary yes, but that is horse feathers if our Dline and get at Lawn Chair Jones who is typically is poor under pressure. Just my 2 cents

Eifert's 3 receptions a game just don't have me convinced he's going to win ND the game.

Millard has 200 yards receiving and a little over 100 yards rushing. Pretty close to your TE's total yardage.

Eifert's numbers are down this year because he is always double-teamed. When he is split wide he draws an extra defender, which takes a guy out of the box, which means we run the ball. The BYU game is a perfect example. They tried to play Eifert straight up, and he had 4 catches for 73 yards and a TD on the first drive. Then they double-teamed him, and we ripped them up for 270 rushing yards, throwing only three passes in the entire second half.

He's the type of player that comes down with every ball that's thrown anywhere near him. He can't be single-covered.

If you don't know, now you know.

That's good info on Eifert. I'll keep an eye on him.

But FWIW- we're probably going to be the best secondary you see all year. Will be a fun matchup.

True, not trying to say the OU game will go the same way -- just that Eifert is a player who demands attention. His lack of production this season is misleading.

OU has 31 touchdown drives under 5 minutes this season.
ND has 20 touchdown drives on the season, total.

I just want to change the record for a minute and say that I love this on-going debate, lol. It feels as though it's on the verge of heating up and everyone (for the most part) is tip-toeing with their answers, trying not to offend. Just wait til Friday night/Saturday morning on here, lol. Someone please rep Wooly and OUMullen for me. I can't.

As for Saturday,

We aren't going to pass much, imo. We will run the ball, even if it is getting stuffed. We will try to slow the game down to a snail's pace.

I doubt it will get too heated. We both think our team is better than it is, and the opponent is worse than it is.
And I certainly won't be around on Friday and Saturday as I make my way up to Norman.

I can respect that. I was just saying they do a lot of the same things. I can't argue with you on Eifert. I've just seen a few youtube clips, that's about it. Millard runs routes down the middle of the field, but isn't Landry's primary deep threat. He is used as a saftey valve more times than not. Not sure about speed, Millard isn't slow. Are the Jump balls ment to be jump balls, or is it because the QB puts him in a position to have to make a play?

For whatever reason you make me feel a tad more comfrtable about this game. Would you go on the record saying if ND can successfully rush the ball, we win?

You are not getting what I am saying. If we run the ball how we have the rest of the year, then you are getting less than 9 drives in this game. If that is the case, then you will need to score touchdowns on more than half of your drives to score more than 24 points. We can still win even if you do score 24, but scoring on half of your drives will also assume that you don't turn the ball over a single time. Neither of those things have happened to us all season. No team has scored on half of their drives and no team has gotten away from us without turning the ball over. In fact, no one has even challenged either of those stats.

What you are inferring with your "fast scoring" is that you will do several things to us that not one team has done all year.

I have gone on record that if we win the turnover margin and TOP we will win.

A great deal of Eifert's jump balls are designed jump balls. Corners have a hard time beating a 6'6" ball hawk for a jump ball, so a great deal of his plays are thrown up for grabs.

Great insight. Thanks for the great football talk.

you're welcome
Whats really to discuss?
This is very similar to Politics every one is convinced their party is the best.

Now IF Y'all can get in LJs face and flush him out the pocket regularly , Then It may be a Blow out in your favor .

I originally came here to maybe offer some insight on Norman

Without thinking in depth that is an amazing spot on analysis, and it makes perfect sense. Scorign on half of your possesions would be an incredible fea, and imo wont happen against our defense. GO IRISH!!!!

Correct.
BYU isn't walking through those doors this week.

Again... no team has:

- Scored 24 points on us
- Won the TO battle
- Scored on half of their drives

You are making the assumption that you will win this game by accomplishing all three. I'm not saying OU cant win, i'm just saying it isn't going to happen the way that you claim. There is no statistical basis for your claim. You can make all of the BYU jokes you want, but it doesn't change the fact that you're argument on how OU will win is ridiculously out of touch with how the game of football is actually played.

OUMallen, I'd like to introduce you to olevet, or as you like to call him "idiot-troll". Please make sure he gets home safely.

While many of the info exchanges have been enlightening, wonder what would be said to us Irish fans if we showed up on your boards predicting a 6+ TD win over the Sooners.

Why dont YOU come over and see?
as For Mallen and I we've known each other for several years

You can read my response to that if you like. I think that even people that think OU will win should think that "scoring fast" isn't the way to do it. Unless you want to do three or four things that no team over seven weeks has done to our top ranked defense.

I hope Stoops takes your gameplan. It plays right into what we want to do as a football team.

Im not really discussing the Game in very much depth simply because it will do no good. Like I said I originally came here to offer insight to NORMAN on game day and stadium Info

You are a strange bird.... if you aren't here to discuss the game in depth, then why are you posting in a thread called "Breaking Down ND/OU". This thread was specifically made to go in depth on the game.

Is that supposed to be an insult?

No... it was an observation...
