What have people heard about the walk-on wide receiver Andre Smith? I ran into an ND buddy of mine the other day who told me that Andre Smith would be in the two-deep at WR. I'm not sure whether he was seriously predicting that or whether he was joking about how unproven our current wide receivers are.

I vaguely remember thinking that Smith looked like a decent player from what I saw during spring practice, but I'm curious what other people have heard or remember seeing, if anything. Is this guy going to compete for playing time?

He may be in the 2-deep right now, since he only has to hold off Massa and D. Smith at X/W WR. But to stay there, he's also going to have to hold off Ferguson and Brown.

I've heard the same things about Andre; turned a few heads in spring practice, and might make some noise during the season. It's always a feel good story when a scrappy walk-on defies the odds and sees the field, but I don't think his odds of holding off four scholarship players is very good.

I imagine the first five recievers are (assuming Riddick and KR are RBs): T.J. Jones, DaVaris Daniels, Robby Toma, John Goodman, and Davonte Neal, so I guess he'd have to beat out one of Daniel Smith, Justin Ferguson, and Chris Brown to get on the depth chart.

But considering we are going to be using lots of multiople TE sets and motioned RBs, I'd say there is not much chance he steps on the field as a WR barring some injuries unless he is pretty darn good.

Even if he isn't in the two deep, it would be awesome if he got some ST reps.

No. 84: Andre Smith, WR
6-2, 190
sophomore (Davie, Fla./North Broward Prep)

by Adam Jimenez

During the Spring Game, readers kept on asking who is this Andre Smith guy? Well Smith is a walk on from the state of Florida. He saw some PT in the spring game and is actually number 2 on the depth chart behin TJ Jones. If Smith works hard he may get a scholly by NSD!

That's all I could find... color me interested...

Goodman, Daniels, Jones, Smith, and Massa are all the of the returning outside WRs. I thought Massa was getting good reviews as well this Spring camp...

That'd be a great story. I love the guys that have a chip on their shoulder and fight to prove something

Is Andre the same WR that Floyd said would break out this year?

He mentioned Daniel Smith, not Andre.

It was in response to the question of, "Who do you think will step up and fill your shoes at X/W WR?" IIRC, he responded, "Probably Dan Smith," and in an off-hand fashion. I didn't read it as a ringing endorsement of Dan Smith's potential as a sleeper.

I'm wandering off-topic, but thank you for saying this. People have been reading way too much into that off-hand comment by Floyd. I even think the question was phrased like, "Who do you think will step that people don't really know about yet?" That might explain why he said Daniel Smith as opposed to a more established player. (Not that I don't think Daniel Smith could have a breakout year; hopefully he does.)

Verified by standing next to him (as is the proper method), correct?
