Leatherwood getting waived is puzzling. I thought he was a reach as a first round draft pick and could've been picked up in round 2, but it's not like he couldn't play. He was a first team All American and Outland Trophy winner, and he started every game for the Raiders as a rookie. I'm betting there's more to this. Maybe he showed up for camp totally out of shape or there are some personal/behavior issues that haven't been made public.
It was only two clips on Twitter but he looked like a HS player trying to stop a DE in one and the other he got walked back into the QB without slowing the guy down.

Bishop2b5,
Four questions I would like to know
1) You are primarily a bama fan?
2) You were from bama?
3) You now live in Montana?
4) Bishop 2 B 5 is a chess thing? Because i spent years thinking you were working on being a priest lol

He’s not lost many of the neutral site games either so while the backhanded compliment is accurate it’s a bit misleading. And, for the record, I have hated those games and glad they are moving away from them. But I would swap Bama’s schedule every year for Notre Dame’s.
Are you factoring in cross-country travel across multiple time zones? Regardless of opponent, that takes a toll…even on young healthy athletes and it’s been a focus of seasons when ND has scheduled east coast to west coast back-to-back. It’s the price they pay for being independent.

Eh, seems harsh. I say Fuck Michigan because they're a bunch of sanctimonious, egotistical bigots that still think they're top of the pile.
I dislike Bama, but only because I'm a little jealous. They've got an embarrassment of riches when it comes to talent, and all they do is win. I don't know what goes on behind closed doors, but whatever they've done seems to work and they have a commitment to whatever it takes to excel at football. So I guess I'd rather learn from Alabama just a bit and change a few things we're doing as a program so we have a better chance of emulating that success.

Yes, I'm primarily a Bama fan, though I do pull for ND most of the time and consider myself an ND fan. I grew up in Alabama and did my undergrad work at Bama. Lived in S. Dakota for the past 12 years, but recently moved to Montana. Bishop2b5 is definitely a chess thing. I've long been an avid player, at one time had a Master's rating, and bishop to b5 is the distinctive move of the Ruy Lopez opening, which I often play, so thus the name.

I may have a better answer for what the problem is with Alex Leatherwood. After the Raiders waived him, the Bears signed him. I read some analysis from a Bear's reporter that may explain things. He said that Leatherwood has all the physical qualities, is very intelligent, has a good attitude and work ethic, and no off the field issues. The problem is a profound lack of technique. He said most scouts thought he skated by on physical ability alone at Bama without developing his technique and skill set enough, and that got severely exposed when he got to the NFL. He said the Bears staff think they can teach him the technique and develop him into a very good lineman.

Absolutely shocking to me that the Mayock/Gruden combo would draft a guy on his traits and fail to develop him…

This could be spot on. There was no technique in the clips I watched.

That raises the question about the Bama Oline coach. Is he a good coach or does the talent hide his shortcomings as a Oline coach?

I hope so, the Bears need all the help they can get currently.

In my estimation, the talent is the cornerstone of what makes Bama great. The assistant coaches have been somewhat of a revolving door so saying it’s the “coaching” seems like a stretch. As to what makes Saban great, in my opinion it is his ability to manage said talent once they started winning consistently. The bagmen prior to NIL, lax academics and minimal travel for games help in that regard as well I would guess.

This is a great look at Saban's philosophy on recruiting, how he does it, what he looks for, and etc. Nick's got it down to a science. Good read for any CFB fan who wants to learn more about recruiting.

Great article……and it certainly lines up perfectly with the success during Sagan’s reign at Alabama. I do see some similarities with Marcus Freeman’s approach. Marcus has a tighter window to operate with but applying much of Saban’s philosophy is certainly on the table. It’s not really complicated, it just requires total dedication from all involved. We haven’t had that at ND during the recent past.

Bama's basketball team has turned into a pretty good program under coach Nate Oats. Two weeks ago, we beat #1 North Carolina in 4 OT's. Today we played #1 Houston in their arena. The first half was a close back & forth battle, but they blew us out starting in the second half and went up by 15. Game over... until it wasn't. We came back from 15 down and knocked them off 71-65. Amazing game. Forgive my enthusiasm. It's been a long time since our basketball team was this good.

I'd imagine that Oats has at or near a 100% approval rating among the fanbase, right? He's a heck of a coach.

Absolutely. We had such high hopes for our two previous coaches, Anthony Grant and Avery Johnson, but neither seemed able to get us to the next level and sustain any success. Oats, though, has exceeded all expectations so far. We are very happy with him.

As a Bears fan, I dont like it.

For real. Injury for either hurts the Bears. Anderson as a prospect to draft for the Monsters of the Midway and Young as a guy who a QB hungry team might want to trade up for. Assuming he doesn’t go 1 overall to Houston.

I'm proud of both those guys for this. Neither has any real prospect of improving their draft status by playing since both are expected to be among the first few players drafted, but they decided to not let their team and teammates down by opting out.
That or a bag full of money 🤷
