Why leave a good thing for a lame duck coach? If Taylor was in his first year there it’d be a different story. He’s barely hanging on to his job.
I don't think he is a lame duck if he sorts the D out. Wounded beast at the moment.

If we lose Golden I’m guessing we promote Mickens and he can still oversee DB’s or higher someone for another positionm

Every coach has different motivations, but man the NFL is just a revolving door with zero stability for coaches unless your last name is Reid, Harbaugh, Tomlin or Belichick.

If I'm a family man the college coaching lifestyle is preferred, especially for Golden who isn't tasked with recruiting 24/7.

They'd have to pony up the money, that's for sure. Golden makes more at ND than Graham was making with the Raiders.

Probably less, his salary of $2.25M at ND would be the 5th highest in the NFL for a DC. It won't be a money thing.

Wow, I wonder if ND could chip a little more into the pot to keep him for another year or two. I guess if he really wants the NFL, it won't be a money thing as you said. Every man has to be true to himself.

Mickens is ready. But I think this reporter is full of shit. Not saying that Al won't take the job, but him being a finalist would mean he has been interviewing and I just can't buy that.

I don't think it said that he interviewed, just that he is the preferred option and the other guy is the move if Golden turns them down. And that it wouldn't be resolved under after the NC.

You 100% promote Mickens and hope for the best if Golden leaves. You do not bring in someone from the outside.
This and give our LB coach more responsibility so that when Mickens moves on to a HC, he can replace him

It didn't say he interviewed, but how could they be down to two guys, with Golden as the favorite, if he hasn't even talked to them yet?

My guess is if they promote Michens then they do the same thing that they've already done and bring in another young dynamic DB coach that Michens can groom and help make sure the back end stays legit

He could still be the DB Coach if he wants to

If Golden leaves, and Mickens is still here there is a 100% chance he gets the job if he wants it.

I would literally be shocked if they even interviewed anyone for the job.

My guess is that it would be announced in the same announcement.

On the plus side, would be able to get a more dynamic recruiter in the helm in Mickens + replace him with another one. Golden a phenomenal coach but obviously not out there recruiting like many coordinators.
