ND should be real threat to flip him. PSU and USC also recently offered so maybe some blood in the water on his commitment status

This has taken off in a hurry. I wonder if they offered because they don’t like directions other recruitments are going?

I'm a little baffled by this. We already have Halter and Flanigan committed, and we're in good shape for Von Brandt and Wagner. Plus we have a puncher's chance with Simien.

I have to believe that a young player who has a monster dad elite coach and is already himself a physical monster could easily draw attention from our staff. The early agreement to Michigan, followed by his dad leaving Michigan, and starting to wonder then if he actually WANTS Michigan also seems pretty duh-obvious. Who's to say that this guy won't be a kick-ass demon; his dad already looks like one.

Okay that's fair. Just didn't see us taking more than 4 OL this year unless the 5th was a Simien/Brown/Matthews level player.

We’ve been beating around the bush hard around here that a lot of these guys are three stars recently lol

this board was freaking out into like June last year about how awful the class was. Great to be back.

All of these 3 stars have offers from other power programs. They aren’t BK-esque stretches early in the class for a guy with a low P4 offer list. This time last year Grayson McKeough was a low 3 star and ended up the #7 overall player on rivals. It’s so early.

Guys,

Like the addition of Charlie Thom to ND's board last year mid-cycle, people have to realize that in a 105 scholarship world ND is going to be willing to take a "flyer" on a few players each class that are projects, whose upside / intangibles they feel good about. It's not indicative of a failing recruiting effort. They're simply able to take a couple extra guys that they weren't before so they're both shooting for the moon at the top of the class and looking for quality projects at the bottom of it.

Yes, with expanded scholarships, there’s no reason not to take a kid like Toilolo, who is a guy with great offers from a great program at a position of need. Doesn’t prevent us from getting Parks / Folorunshu

Also, sometimes I wonder if the staff uses an offer like this to put pressure on the other recruits.

Would not mind moving on from Wagner if a decision isn’t made already/soon

He's not "make-or-break" for me by any stretch, but I like his versatility in his ability to play both guard and right tackle. Reminds me of a Christian Lombard type swing guy that probably contributes as a depth guy at some point in his career, filling in for an injury, but who you want to recruit over in terms of starters.

If Wagner and Flanigan are the floor of the OL class, ND has done fine. But I agree that neither is irreplaceable in any way and there are a handful of guys that would give tou essentially the same thing as Wagner as a prospect.

This + they do their own evaluations and may disagree with the 3-star ranking.
