Yea this is what I was thinking. Signing him won’t be cheap. I love WRs (coach them), I would gladly take 2 LBs, Simien, and the DL we are pursuing. Allocation of resources

Definitely a numbers game. Let's say his number is $700,000 for year 1 (just making that up) and ND is willing to pay $400,000 for year 1 (also making that up). They could probably jump to $700,000, but it might mean taking from the money they want to give to Henderson, Sesay, Parks, etc.

They're going to get Julius Jones Jr, which means they will have landed 7 WRs over two cycles and brought 2 impact undergrad transfers in via the Portal. That's 9 guys over two cycles... At some point you have to ensure you're balancing out the roster at other positions... You have zero linebackers committed. I think I'd be focusing on Henderson and Igwebuike and trying to finish up my DL recruiting at this point.

Gayles is excellent. Not downplaying the player at all. But in a "salary cap" era you have to focus on your needs to ensure your program is well rounded and stocked with talent. And it's not as if ND would be a lock to land him even if they did pull money from somebody else to compete for him. You have factor that in as well. How do they feel about landing him vs some of their other top targets that are also in decision mode right now and want their offers finalized.

Yup. Take the hypothetical 4k and spread that out to Simien, Henderson and Igwebuike

Exactly. You can't land everyone. You evaluate who your top guys are and land as many of them as you can afford, while trying to sprinkle in some cheap guys that you think are underrated (and therefore cost less) but are trusting your staff to develop for rister depth.

Sucks, he’s a speed demon and huge talent. But this one’s not a dire loss.

Feel like we buy low on a guy having a great senior season for spot 3. I don’t see us just taking 3 pass catchers between Hawk, Coleman, and Jones Jr

Very well could be. They might also circle back to another tight end if one they like comes available at the right price.

Cute for Bama to get a recruit finally
I knew Bama was struggling lately but holy shit their recruiting is terrible right now. Their class rankings right now on On3, 247 and 247 composite are #34, 47, and 49. By comparison our class is ranked #2 on all 3 of them! They have a 5* QB and Gayles, but that's about it

Some of it is probably Bama having less big donors in their alumni base compared to the current recruiting elite as well as recent (prolific) success sort of nullifying any desire to spend big. No bama donor is trying to chase an elusive natty.

In the old days (pre-NIL), they had bagmen from local stores. The big ten and other schools (ND, Texas schools, Oregon) have big donor money and can legally pay

I would like to see what their NIL numbers are. Once paying players became legal, that team fell off a cliff.
Live by the sword, die by the sword. Its an amazing time when Texas and Texas AM seem to be trending to be the big dawgs of the SEC… and maybe even Oklahoma.

Part of it is the money. I think the big part is I don't think Alabama has a lot of faith in DeBoer.

He just really doesn't fit in Tuscaloosa. And I think that lack of buy-in is carrying over to the recruits. It's just a different feel than when Saban was running the show.
