It does make one think - I'm not saying it's the case, but it does prompt you to pause and think about it - Do the IUs, TTUs, and ASUs have it right? Just go after the cream that rises after a year or two and not worry about HS players who may benefit from your development but just bolt for the TP greener pastures before your team and staff can harvest that development and that could be perceived as $s that were thrown away those early years.
Of course, if you play the top 4 and 5 star players early and they feel they have the inside shot to start / make an impact AND get paid enough at Market rates, the following years, they are likely to stay, but it's certainly a balancing act.
It will be interesting to see what approach wins out, or are there two ways to approach success and CFP selection, and if you're good at HS 'crootin' and can retain a lot if your HS talent, and just optimally acquire from the portal, many challenges we're seeing for this notwithstanding, this more effective TP approach with strong HS recruiting can work just as well, but that remains to be seen.
And as many have pointed out, maybe future legislation/regulation will change things here.
