Knapp Wildcat when
Talich had a similar quote. Something about not mattering what position it’s just football you stop the other team.
To me either is high praise. First ballot HF'er or still playing HF'er.More Q than Zach
True. One of the more generally annoying features of modern college football is not knowing what time a game is gonna be until less than a week out.
And for his first two years, we had a lot of people wanting to put Knapp on the bench. I think many were unfairly comparing him to Alt and expecting the same results since both were playing as freshmen.
I found it curious that Guerby wasn’t playing tackle last year next to Knapp at guard.NOTHING AGAINST KNAPP, but no need to rewrite history. Our Big Boy had lots of difficulty at first with the LT job requirements, especially vs speed rushes and the footwork needed to reset on the reverse spin move. I refused to be overly critical of him, though IEers consistently bitch about everything, but Knapp DID need improvement. In his latter season games and his second year, he got more and more consistent. The real tell however is that the staff KNEW he wasn't in the correct position.
My opinion again so ... I believe that the staff is still not sold on Lambert at tackle --- as Tengwall pointed out, Lambert does not (yet) have ideal foot talent for the position. What he apparently does have is superior length for recovery purposes. Tengwall illustrated that Lambert gets his feet wrongly placed a lot, then gets his arms way too wide (like he's "flying"), and in the end is stumbling to the ground too often. ND MIGHT have had a line-up with the best three or four GUARDS in the nation, but not any of the best tackles. Now comes this year. Rudolph seems to believe that Black has true tackle feet, and hopes that Lambert can get there. Frankly, if Jagusah was healthy, Rudolph could experiment all he wanted knowing that the most powerful guard in the country was SO powerful and flexible that he could move to tackle if needed.
Lambert was a redshirt freshman playing a position he was not accustomed to. He is better suited long term to be a tackle imo and will progress with another year of playing college fbMy opinion again so ... Yeah, I get that, but it wasn't Knapp's decision to be put at LT. It just seemed to me that the criticism should have been directed to the staff and not at Knapp.True, but people weren't asking for 2026 OG Anthony Knapp to be benched. People were not happy that 2024 true freshman IOL Knapp was our best option at LT. He was certainly better than most people hoped/thought he would be.

I feel like tackle will be fine and they wouldn't have made the roster moves that they did if they didn't believe in Black/Lambert.
The question is really going to be what happens at RG with Augustine being a natural tackle and there are scenarios where you would probably be best off playing him at RT and sliding Lambert back to RG in lieu of playing Lambert at RT and Augustine at RG.
Knapp is a security blanket for the left side because if you pick up an injury at LT you can seamlessly slide him back out there.
But which lineup(s) scares our opponentsThis is kind of how I see it. I think this year has a much higher floor than some previous years.
Unlike past years, none of the line combinations would scare me very much at all:
Black--Knapp--Craig--Lambert--Augustine
Knapp--Absher--Craig--Lambert--Black
Black--Lambert--Craig--Knapp--Augustine
Black--Absher--Craig--Lambert--Knapp'
Black-Absher--Craig--Knapp--Lambert
And Jagusah could emerge later season too...
Agree, never miss an opportunity to teach.Always stuns me here at IE that so many commentators take the extremist view of making criticism of anything some kind of nasty personal condemnation of whomever that critique was/is about. You can like and even really admire a person and still point out something that could be better about the "job" that we're talking about. "Not being perfect" is The Human Condition. I'll bet Coach Rudolph didn't mince words when Knapp screwed up a play/technique; but I'll bet that he continued supporting him and liking him.
