Something tells me this guy is gonna figure it out. He doesn't look comfortable back there. When he gains that sense, I think we are gonna see the leg that everyone was gushing about preseason.

Just hope it doesn't bite us in the ass before then.
I'm with you. He's not comfortable back there, and whatever they're doing in practice clearly isn't working. They need to change it up and help get his head out of his ass. Always something with these fucking kickers.

He couldn’t even make the AFL which is called fumble ball here.
We should have recruited the Canterbury Bulldogs 5-8. He can boot a ball.

Didn’t we have a soccer player who didn’t play football here but now is one of the best field goal kickers in the NFL?

I don’t really buy what Freeman is saying about practice being the problem. It looks like he just freezes up in games. I guess the word is “chokes”.

I feel sorry for the guy. He just needs to relax.

My thought has been that he is just not good and we were sold a bill of goods to take him.

But let’s Give Him A Chance and hope I’m wrong.

Good luck on Saturday James.

Agree, I think he's kicking it to quickly for fear of getting it blocked.

Strangely, all of the aussie's I've met in my life seemed to lack general fear/anxiety. I was half convinced that was why they've made such excellent specialists in the nfl.

Same experience for me as well though they were usually drunk at the time.

Most of the aussie rules guys are bogans so tbh they wouldn't have the greatest prospects in life outside of sport. Loud Headley for example was working as a scaffolder before he committed to Miami and then got a NFL shot with the Saints

I didn't read the whole thread so this might have been stated above. In any case, why would ND go to Australia to get a punter that hasn't ever played a down of American football? Why even risk it when you have the resources to get a competent punter with some experience? Time will tell but I think MF outsmarted himself on this one.

Jim Tressel told MF to do it.

Because it typically works. We managed to find the rare bust.

Not trying to argue, but can you give an example or two where it did work? (no previous football experience). Thanks

(BTW, we are getting pretty good at finding the rare busts...Oben, Rendell, RL, for example)

Australia has produced something like 5 or 6 Ray Guy winners since the mid 2000s. Bama had James Burnip who was a stand out. Then there's the Iowa kid. To get a vibe of how common this is:

"Taylor has so far played three Australian punters in Iowa’s opening games: Indiana’s James Evans, Iowa State’s Corey Dunn and Smith. Next on the schedule will be Purdue’s Jack Ansell, Minnesota’s Mark Crawford and Illinois’ Blake Hayes. One of his best friends — Xavier Subotsch — plays for Appalachian State.

Taylor was frank this spring when he spoke about how little he knew about American football. Some of the logistics of when to celebrate or even how the game works only came through game experience.

That’s common for Australian punters at first. Subotsch said that while he had watched college football for a few years from Australia before playing, he had similar struggles as Taylor."

Because our head coach isn’t good at making decisions.

Worst ND punter I have seen.

Meanwhile McFerson has been crushing it at MD, from his bio:

As a Redshirt Sophomore (2024):
  • Named to Ray Guy Award Ray’s 8 List in each of first two weeks
  • Four punts for 194 yards (48.5 avg) with three I-20 and a long of
    63 vs. Michigan State (9/7)
  • Six punts for 269 yards (44.8 avg) with five inside the 20 and a
career long of 64 in Maryland debut vs. UConn (8/31)
Bryce McFerson - Football - University of Maryland Athletics
You mean the same way he killed it at ND as a top 10 punter last year!
