The only problem I see with going after the guys at those schools is you're still looking at a limited number of kids that can help. The talent isn't there. Their rosters aren't loaded with 4 & 5 star guys. That's why they're normally 5-8, 6-7, 7-6, 8-5.. If we're talking about 1 or 2 players or adding depth at the back end then you could probably get some help.

The difference makers have to be recruited directly most of the time. The portal is for patching holes in the depth chart. And a high 3- star kid we misevaluated who is already on the two deep at a peer school as an underclassman is perfect for that.

Correct. Brandon Joseph was a 3* Safety per 247. Some times these 2* and 3* players will blossom in year one or two of their collegiate program.

Agreed. The Caleb Williams' of the world aren't a realistic option, nor should they be. Notre Dame virtually never does well with the football-first...second, and third kids of the world, even when the staff actually gets some of them to commit.
Depth, and some of it genuine quality, seems to be the model for ND. Some of those guys may turn out to be starters in another year or two.
I think ND can also supplement the roster with some impact guys like Riggs, Skowronek, McCloud, and Coan a lot of years too, but as graduate transfers.
